This has always been up their being one of my favourite Smiths songs, I still remember back to being 9yrs old in 1985 and hearing this beautiful song coming from my older brothers stereo and falling in love with the guitar parts, from that moment I knew everything in my young boys life had just changed instantly! Going from a boy into athletics and football, to going into primary school the following day and saying I really wanted to start guitar lessons and learn how to play the guitar. That I did and guitar, instruments, music, playing in bands, sound recording & production completely took over and shaped my life to what it is now I am 47yrs old. All those lovely sounding guitar riffs, melodies & harmonies entered my head and have never left, inspiring my whole life in the jobs in music I have done, the bands I’ve played in, the style of music I love , the songs I’ve written and carry on writing now and in the future. It’s given me so much nearly everything, for that I am eternally grateful and indebted to Johnny Marr, Morrissey, Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce, so much so it’s not a case of I don’t owe you anything, I my life, it’s more I pretty much owe you everything! A brilliant song and I also love the Sandie Shaw version on vocals when she also sang Hand in glove and Jeanne. All three songs with Sandie singing are total brilliance.
Richard Boon was a manager at Rough Trade at the time of this gig. I was hired by Rough Trade to drive Boon and two other people from London to Manchester for the gig, so I have first hand knowledge of the events!
The debut seems to have a slight narrative. There are multiple references to being ill, going out tonight, gloves. In “pretty girls make graves” the end has a bit from “hand in glove”. And miserable lie Starts similar to “hand that rocks the cradle” . I could just be an obsessed bedroom bound romantic, but this is my observation.
it’s a shame this is the only video of them performing this song live. i’m trying to learn it on guitar and i get roughly 20 seconds of 240p johnny to look at 😭
I will for month's not listening to any Smith's tunes. Then w when I feel like I'm losing it,I will return to the thing that will make sence to me and I can carry on living again.
guys it took me years to discover reel around the fountain, we all can't have the pleasure of owning the CDs, tapes or vinyl. The internet or friends/family that showed us this were not thinking chronically.
@@WC-jd8rn they just mentioned not everyone has the privilege of owning their albums so that basically means they wouldn’t know reel around the foundation was the opening track for all they know it could of been 5th or last track
theres something about their debut album, I perceive the art came through better. and morrissey absolutely crushed it here. subtle performance of them all and tight as can be
Wow! This bootleg is of incredibly good quality. I remember the boolegs I saw in the late 80s were all very poor quality. Thanks for posting this. And thank you youtube!
I Don't Owe You Anything: Bought on stolen wine A nod was the first step You knew very well What was coming next Bought on stolen wine A nod was the first step You knew very well What was coming next Did I really walk all this way Just to hear you say : "Oh, I don't want to go out tonight" ? "Oh, I don't want to go out tonight" Oh, but you will For you must I don't owe you anything, no But you owe me something Repay me now You should never go to them Let them come to you Just like I do Just like I do You should not go to them Let them come to you Just like I do Just like I do Did I really walk all this way Just to hear you say : "Oh, I don't want to go out tonight" ? "Oh, I don't want to go out tonight" But you will For you must I don't owe you anything, no But you owe me something Repay me now Too freely on your lips Words prematurely sad Oh, but I know what will make you smile tonight Life is never kind Life is never kind Oh, but I know what will make you smile tonight Songwriters: Steven Morrissey / Johnny Marr
Longing for her return, like days of yore, Her charming way, I beg for once more. Melting my heart, her singing voice, Oh, how I yearn to hear that rejoice. Tonight, I'll stay in, no desire to roam, Knowing she not obliged to come home. Life's cruel and unkind, it's true, But playing "I Don't Owe You Anything" will do. Memories flood, as the song begins to play, His voice echoing, like he never went away. Repeatedly, I'll play it on my own, His voice a treat, to heal my heart's moan.
The Smiths are the greatest band that ever was period!!! Morrisey is more important than Wilde or Shakespear. This is one of the greatest songs from that first album. And thank you if you love the Smiths like I do. We are a unique and interesting bunch. Don't you think?...
I try to refrain from Morrissey praise. the whole band were so talented. but when i hear the guy singing LIVE this well..... bloody hell. he's amazing.
Nov '05 in a True to You Q&A. Q: Of all your songs, from both Smiths and solo material, which song are you most proud of lyrically? Best wishes, Peter Finan A: Hello Peter, It's impossible to answer this because I'm proud of most of them. There are only a few that make me shudder such as "Get Off The Stage," "Journalists Who Lie," "I Don't Owe You Anything".... But most of them, I think, somehow stand the test of time. Of course, some songs are better than others...
Does anyone one know the guitar chords for this song... they are no where on the internet only the bass tab, which is underdeveloped at that. Much thanks in advance
The only regrettable thing is that the camera guy apparently didn't think Johnny Marr was important enough to film. He's almost invisible on this video. Too bad, we only get a glimpse of him and his beautiful Rickenbacker guitar
Let them come to you, baby......I've been with MOZ since I was a mere babe of 14, and I'm still friends with my men who won't come out because they're on Wall Street and doctors on Park Ave. Oh well, St. Joe's, I know it's gonna happen someday.
