1:28 Benefits of sodium
1:48 Effects of low sodium
2:26 How do you know if you need sodium?
2:32 Fluid retention and potassium
3:59 Sodium and adrenal hormones
4:49 Best type of salt
In this video, we’re going to talk about the sodium myth. Many people will tell you that sodium is the worst thing that you can consume.
In fact, there was a study showing that sodium raises your blood pressure. However, if you look closely at the study, along with consuming less sodium, the participants also consumed less sugar.
The real results suggest that it was the sugar that caused blood pressure problems. Another study with 6,000 people showed that there’s no evidence that links sodium to high blood pressure.
Sodium is an essential mineral. You can’t live without it. You need 1,000 mg of sodium a day.
Sodium is essential for regulating your heart function. It also acts as an electrolyte that controls the balance of fluids flowing through your body.
Low sodium can be caused by drinking way too much water. Low sodium can potentially lead to hyponatremia, heart problems, and swelling in the brain.
So how do you know if you need sodium? The key is to listen to your cravings. If you crave salt, it could be a sign you are either not getting enough sodium or you’re flushing sodium out by drinking too much water.
Fluid retention in your legs, fingers, and other parts of your body, is a sign of too much sodium in the body. However, instead of lowering sodium, it’s more effective to raise your potassium levels.
The best source of potassium is not fruit; it’s vegetables. Most people don’t get enough vegetables-you need 8-9 cups a day to increase your potassium level and balance out your sodium.
Another key point is that if your adrenals are burnt out, you won’t have the hormones that regulate electrolytes and minerals. This can cause poor electrolyte balances.
What type of salt is the best? The best salt is pink Himalayan salt. It’s the purest and most unpolluted sea salt.

Thank you for your videos. Not eating enough sodium (and potassium and magnesium) as I was working out for years nearly killed me. Serious heart rhythm changes and brain swelling occurred and it took over a year to come back from it (and it's still not perfect). It's all about ratios, folks. Ratio of sodium to potassium and ratio of magnesium to calcium. We need all of these minerals and many more for our cells to function.

Magnesium L-threonate is the ONLY mg. that crosses the blood brain barrier. Magnesium malate good for muscles and you need both. Atheletes need about 1200 to 1400 mg a day. Plus their 4700 of potassium, and Vitamin C makes it all work better.

I asked the healthcare provider at the VA if sodium balances or helps regulates potassium. I am one of those people that actually has low blood sodium and high potassium. Anyway she thought about it for a few seconds and then just simply said no. I knew right then and there she was not on top of things and I shouldn't pursue any more discussion on this topic with her. Her solution was for me to eat less foods high in potassium. You can't eat too much potassium in foods mainly vegetables which is where you get the largest percentage of potassium without additives.

I was on a gluten free, low carb, no sugar (organic, hypoglycemic diet of NO unprocessed foods and I STILL got bouts of high blood pressure, but it’s healing. I had Stress response System Dysfunction (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome aka Adrenal Dysfunction) making my stress response “tigger happy” so It’s NOT always what you eat. It was a broken, trigger happy stress response system, but thank GOD for Dr. Andrew Neville, because with him, what other doctors NEVER diagnosed in 10 years of fast heart palpitations, hypoglycemia, panic attacks, anemia, low immune system, allergies, insomnia, joints ache, heart would pound so hard at night my entire bed would shake, would wake up with rapid heart beat every night around 2 or 3am, etc, after 1 consult with the EXPERT of 20 years, Dr. Neville diagnosed me and FINALLY understood and acknowledged my symptoms AND gave me hope that together I WILL heal (since he healed himself and thousands of patients over the last 25 years). Granted, I was in the gym lifting and doing yoga 6 days a week. I am feeling 1000% better after ONLY working 5 months with him even though I am still taking it easy and learning how to relax, calm my mind and body, learning to be kinder to my body and myself and learning how to listen to my body amd how to stop and rest when I am exhausted instead of ALWAYS pushing myself WAY past my threshold. Thought it would be good for OTHWR to know THIS cause of HBP.

I realise that salt and pure sodium are not quite the same, however, when us lot, here in Europe or the US are being told NOT to eat more than 6grams of salt, we have huge epidemics of chronic diseases. Japan, in contrast, a pretty healthy society on the whole, get told the human body needs at least 12grams of salt a day... The same with other minerals and vitamins, for example, magnesium 350-400mg a day here in Europe, 800+mg in Japan. Hmm, I wonder whom I should believe, ill people or healthy people?

@bblrip3690 8 лет назад
+Scynable P.S.: By the way, I am not talking of ordinary salt, but foods based on LONG fermentation processes, like traditional miso, which transforms the sea salt into a compound that is NOT as extremely alkaline as pure salt, but brings it down to a body friendly pH level. Try finding the scientific study on miso and it's effect on heart health. It was carried out by half eastern and half of western scientists and the western scientists were ABSOLUTELY convinced such a high content of salt would be bad for the heart. I cried with laughter all the way through reading the study, as the asian scientists knew what the results would be and not only did the western scientists find that it is NOT bad for the heart AT ALL, but that it was ACTUALLY good and very healing for the heart. This is just one example of many that show that us lot here in the west do not understand the scientific application of yin and yang and that we do not understand what they mean with 'transmutation' of elements/foods, when prepared in traditional ways. And no, I would NOT advocate consuming high amounts of ANY unfermented salt, whether sea salt or himalayan...

Just finished a 30 day water fast at a clinic that doesn't believe in adding salt to food. I could handle their bland food right before I started my fast, even though I didn't love it. But I couldn't get my body to even accept water by the time I got to day 30. Felt like I was dying and might have ended up in the hospital. Thankfully, I already planned to break the rules and my friend brought me salt (as well as grass fed beef stew and bone broth) the next day. I feel so much better after one cup of stew.

All I'm saying is if I watch 3 videos related to a specific subject, and all 3 have him saying something different about it( for instance like whether carrots have too many carbs for keto, he gave a simple yes in one, a simple no in the next but in the second one said no for something else, then in the 3rd one said yes.), then it makes it hard to take it seriously. I like watching people who address their mistakes and explain it, which a few experts do. But ive never seen berg do that. I still like him and I have enough info to fill on where I might disagree or he doesn't explain. Thats fine. At the time of this post I was getting frustrated with that kind of thing because a lot of fake gurus came out around that time and I was impulsive to let it come out at one that i probably shouldnt have. Much respect for him and there is truth to my original comment. I shouldnt have commented that though on a fans comment.

He did not do any tests and chuckled and said he needs Salt! That doctor reversed himself concerning the need for salt and told me to start salting. Drinking water is good, you just need to replace lost minerals. Diabetics especially need to drink a lot of water, since they can't regulate their blood sugar normally they can actually dispose of it from peeing. If they don't drink enough water they won't be able to pee out extra glucose and can result in issues.

Couple things. Firstly, OMG, you've lost a lot of extra fat since you created this video in 2016: lean looks good on you!! Secondly, thank you! In spite of being petite, I've been experiencing chronic swelling in my hands, legs, & feet since I was 17 ( I'm currently 52), regardless if I sit or stand. The only time I ever get relief is when I'm laying down resting & sleeping. My particular body needs a lot of water; upwards to 2 gallons on really hot days when I'm out hiking all day. Because of that, I'm very mindful about electrolytes and consume a decent amount of salt everyday in my fermented veggies, including pink himalayan, celtic, and black himalayan (kala namak). Three years ago my body informed me it was potassium deficient so I began fermenting coconut water to up my potassium intake; however, clearly I must not be getting enough because while it helps a little, initially, the longer I hike, the more swollen my hands become, regardless if it's hot or cold outside. Earlier last week I watched one of your other videos discussing potassium. That's when it clicked! I immediately went out & purchased a quality brand (93 mg dose) and take one pill each night before bed, as I recall my childhood doctor once telling me, "Vitamins in the morning; minerals at night." Most interesting is how I've not experienced any swelling since. Thank you so much for creating these videos and sharing your knowledge so publicly. It's very difficult to find a doctor these days who will address more than one issue at a time and who will offer more than 15 minutes of their time. Actually, where I live, it's just difficult to find a doctor lol! You are a godsend to people like me who need a little medical knowledge to help explain what I so strongly & intuitively know. Bless you & thank you!

I learned this the hard way. I was dieting and reducing my salt and consuming lots and lots of water. I must have flushed my electrolytes right out because i got serious cramps in my abdomen. Once I ate food with salt again it stopped pretty much instantly. Great advice.

Thank you! I learned about the cellular level importance of sea salt and the sodium/potassium ratio back in 1994 when I was studying macrobiotic diet (which I don't do, but still believe in many of the principles). What you are saying works wonderfully and I have had excellent blood pressure levels for 22 years. Did you read any of Dr. Sherry Rogers' books? She has one called "The High Blood Pressure Hoax". The title says it all. :) Keep up your great work & thank you for sharing what you have learned.

In North/West & central India - in Hindi language - "Kala Namak" literally translates to Black salt. It's used as a light sprinkle over deep fried snack items along with other spices & condiments for ages. Yes - it has a strong unpleasant smell. But people there are used to this odour from childhood - so it's not a big issue.

Thanks for clarification. Nothing encourages water intake than salt. The body itself knows better how to balance this. Much of living by the book seems to kill us than letting the body balance itself.

Okay, so does this still apply to heart patients (congestive heart failure) who are told they must drastically reduce their salt intake? They are on diuretics, so does that change the recommendation?
@sylviac.6778
@sylviac.6778 4 года назад
Pull up 2 orthomolecular doctors that have cured congestive heart failure with nutrition dense foods but the biggest recommendation was Vitamin C. Dr. Andrew Saul and Dr. Suzanne Humphries both cure many, many ailments with huge doses of Vitamin C. Look up the ONLY 2 time winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, also not shared with anyone else, Dr. Linus Pauling on Vitamin C. WOW, it is the most important vitamin in the world and cured even polio in 40s and 50s but the curative powers of Vitamin C was laughed at, even with provable studies and results. Why do we trust any doctor that is so unethical that they do not stay current, do cookie cutter medicine and are so tethered to Big Pharma. Do they enjoy making huge profits on the weak, sick, deformed, crippled, and dying with no real actual cure, just a constant stream of one pill after another and big money! We ewould not psy a car mechanic just to practice on our car and pay him, too. No, we expect our car to be fixed. Some doctors seem almost Sadistic and uncaring and makes Hitler's Dr. Mengele look like "Ned and The First Reader".

I've been reading on this. It seems that the balance of sodium and potasium is important. I think that what's you are saying as well. But the levels of sodium they say are required are much higher than you indicate. More like 3000 milligrams per day. Perhaps you mean 1000 milligram added salt? Also I read that low sodium intake is bad for the adrenal glands. Is that true? Can you do a video about how much sodium we need depending on lifestyle? Because I can imagine the 1000 mg you indicate is for people that aren't active or that live in colder climates. But if you are active, how much more sodium (and potasium too I guess because of the balance) is needed? Also I tead that in the ketogenic diet, more salt is needed. Is that because we need more bile and stomach salts to process the higher fat content in the ketogenic diet?
