The Sony A-mount to E-mount LA-EA Adapters Explained

Choosing between Sony's LA-EA1, LA-EA2, LA-EA3, or LA-EA4 adapter used to be an easy decision - the even numbered adapters always gave the best performance. Then Sony introduced E-mount cameras with native phase-detect AF, and so the nuanced decision became less cut-and-dried.
Be sure to watch Part 2 at • The Sony A-mount to E-... .
Here's the nuanced summary for those of you who don't want wade through a 13-minute video, enhanced by viewer "Lofote":
1. Screwdriver-driven lens? LA-EA 2 or 4. (If you don't need autofocus, then you can use LA-EA1 or 3.)
2. SSM / SAM lens and APS-C body: LA-EA1. The LA-EA1 isn't being made anymore, so you can substitute the LA-EA3 instead.
3. SSM / SAM lens and any full-frame body except A7R: LA-EA3
4. Camera that has “NEX” in name, the original A7, A6000, A5000, A3000, A3500, A7S, and A7S II: LA-EA2. Since the LA-EA2 isn't being made anymore, you can substitute the LA-EA4 instead.
5. Sony A7R: LA-EA4
Don't forget to watch the alternative ending at the end! :-)
I talk about the LA-EA5 (which can only be used on the most recent Sony cameras) at • LA-EA4r Monster Adapte... .

What about the LAEA5 adapter? What happens if I have Minolta A mount screw lenses, A Tamrom USD lens and Sigma HSM lenses. Not to mention a Carl Zeiss SSM lens coming this week.
@FriedmanArchives
@FriedmanArchives 2 года назад
Hi, Jurek! All of those lenses should work on an LA-EA5 adapter providing 1) you're using a recent Sony body that supports it (A1, A7 IV, A6600, possibly some others) and 2) you're not trying to shoot video. Sony gave up on that one. I do show a little bit about what to expect with the LA-EA5 in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xy4GZURBkF0.html

Thanks for this vidéo Gary. As usual very clear and informative. Just a note as an A-mount shooter myself on A58, A77ii , A99ii and having tried the LAEA3 on A7R2 during 1 full week with my own lenses, I can tell that the transition a to e has for the moment too many cons for A-mounters involved on the A system. Sony must upgrade the adaptors to give at least the AF system of A77ii, at best the one found in A99ii. 3fps in AFC is a major no-go compared to 12fps AFC for example.

I have the NEX 5r and got the 4, there isn't really a reason as far as I'm understanding to get the 2 since the just because 4 is full frame doesn't mean it won't work, it'll still crop in and works perfectly and will continue to work when I upgrade to a new full frame Sony (well up until the a7iv, it needs the 5 apparently, but I'll get an a7iii or something instead)

Great video - although there's the version LA-EA5 now of course. I am not sure Minolta put the motor in the lens for cost reasons, at the time this was a sensible engineering move, and most other manufacturers used a similar design - only Canon put a motor in the lens, which did give them an initial advantage. I have a Minolta 5000, 7000 and 9000 and a number of lenses and am looking to adapt them to an A1 and A7RV with the LA-05 - really appreciate the video. Thanks from the UK.

The autofocus accuracy and speed of the LA-EA4 can't be compared with that of the best Sony SLT cameras. However it is good enough. Nowadays a digital full frame camera is affordable. The Sony a7 camera body can be found new at around 750€. On the other hand nearly all native autofocus full frame e-mount lenses are expensive. The LA-EA4 adapter isn't expensive. It can be found new between 200-250€. I use many legacy Minolta a-mount lenses I bought from eBay which are really good. I think that it is a clever choice. I really love my Minolta AF 500mm f/8, the only mirror lens with autofocus ever. There is an exact copy of this lens by Sony too. Nearly all of the first Sony a-mount lenses were exact copies of Minolta lens. These sony lenses are more expensive but are the same as Minolta ones.
@Lofote
@Lofote 6 лет назад
It's the autofocus system of the A65 that was used here. So it is the same as the 65. Of course SLT development continued and even when A65 came out it was stripped down from the A77 system that came out the same day. Thats the problem.

wow. Your master class has been absolutely impresive. I'm on a hard looking for a "new-old" camera because my old sony a330 can't afford (or maybe it's me) the photography I want to do. I need to photograph to my daughters on indoor rolling skate and the light is too poor in that kind of sports center. I own a fantastic minolta 80-200 2.8 high speed but if I configure the camera at more than 500 of speed (really I wanted to use it at 1000) I can't take brightness photos because the max iso is 3200 (and I think that more than 800 is not a good idea). so... minolta has screwdriver --> I need LA-EA2 or 4. But if I buy a sony a7 (only a7, with no R, no II, no III....) it's the same? or as it's a full fame I can only buy a LA-EA4 ? Is it usable or I will waste the good as the minolta is? Remember that it's so quick. I don't know what to do because I want to retain my fantastic lens. Or should I buy another camera with high iso? I also looked for alpha 65 or alpha 77 but somebody told me that the translucend mirror remove some light. sorry for a lot of questions.

Does the Sony LA-EA5 (when fitted to a Sony A7R IV) support any video modes with any Minolta AF lenses using AUTO FOCUS? OR Does it actually DO LESS than the limited Auto Focus video option available with a LA-EA4? [check out video testing at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O71jsijz2AU.html]

Gary Friedman - The Friedman Archives - can I pick your brain? I have a Sony a7M2 (just purchased at Best Buy so I’m planning on keeping), however I’m new to photography and on a tight budget and want to learn and explore quite a bit. I’m interested in buying some very inexpensive Minolta maxxum lenses A mount on eBay to play with. Now I would of course need the LA-ea4 for that? Is that correct? But what if I wanted to buy some SSM lenses on eBay that are Sony A mount configuration, will that work on that adapter as well or do I also need to purchase the LA-ea3, which my budget doesn’t want too consider? Also the new LA-ea5 of course marries the two technologies, so should I wait a few weeks for that adapter to come out? Thats of course begs the question: Would that adapter even work for my camera? I’ve read the new adapters compatibility list’s on Sony’s website and it mentions several e-mount cameras except mine as being compatible. Does that sound right to you? Thanks very much for any info you may have for me. I truly respect your opinion and knowledge.
@FriedmanArchives
@FriedmanArchives 4 года назад
@@erichramone7812 Yes, the LA-EA4 will work with all of those lenses, including SSM/SAM type. But you might want to wait for the new LA-EA5 to ship; if the old lenses you have will work on it it will bring more modern AF features.

I am considering switching from my old Sony a5000 to a used 6000 in good condition, since I found a good deal at the local camera store, body and kit lens for 340€. Would it be worth getting the LA-EA2 later down the line, so I could use older Minolta lenses like the 35-105mm zoom lens? I inherited a Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 7D with a few AF lenses almost three years ago, and they are just sitting in a drawer. Hi. I just got a Tamron 28-300XR Di lens with the screw for auto focus. I've got my Sony LAEA4 adapter. When I turn the A7Siii on, it moves the lens to infinity, but it seems stuck on manual, which is very difficult to do because the focusing screw is engaged. The camera does not seem to see the lens as auto at all... Any advice? Thanks

That is definitely not normal behavior. If you can't change the focus mode via the menus, then I'd say something is definitely wrong. Does it only happen with that lens?

Minolta had introduced α-mount lenses with motorized power zoom. Thes series of lenses were named: xi xi α-mount lenses are not compatible with Sony α-mount to e-mount adapters for Sony e-mount cameras. xi α-mount lenses don't have exactly the same electronic contacts as other α-mount lenses.
@AgnostosGnostos
@AgnostosGnostos 5 лет назад
Gary Friedman I am happy that you appreciated my tip. The LA-EA4 isn't not totally incompatible. The Sony LA-EA α-mount to e-mount adapter permits autofocus and can change the aperture of Minolta autofocus α-mount xi power zoom lenses. The problem is with the zoom. The zoom with xi lenses is only motorized and it can't be used manually. The LA-EA4 according to my experience and various reviews of internet doesn't permit the motorized zoom of the Minolta xi α-mount lenses. The official manual of LA-EA4 doesn't inform at all about legacy Minolta α-mount lenses. I remember the Minolta during the film era and I couldn't understand the benefits of power zoom with film photographic cameras. I bought from eBay the minolta 28-105mm xi f3.5-4.5 at great price and was using it with my old SLT Sony camera without problem for photos and videos. It has good optical quality in the center.

I need your opinion on the sony LA-EA adapters. I bought a week ago a sony nex 7 because of it´s 24MP , it´s small size and because of its manual focus capabilities. . It was a bargain(under 200€ with the Kit lens). I still use a Sony a 58 and i´m happy with it.but after somes hours the bag becomes heavy . My idea is to use the Sony nex 7 in a litle bag in my car with one or two of my vintage lenses (minolta and sony lenses ) . What model of adapter do you recomend ? La EA 1 or 3 ?

It would seem that the EA-4 would work for everything and is backward compatible. Otherwise, this was very informative.

Hello Mr. Gary, I like your advice and appreciate your pedagogy. I have a device Sony ILCA-77 II, besides I just get your book on it. Really nice to read. I use the following lenses: SAL70200G f/2.8 + 1.4x doubler, the SAL1650 f/2.8, Planar 85mm f/1.4 and the Sony SAL5014. In APS-C I use the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro and the Tokina 1116 DXII. Here's one of my questions, which adapter should I use for my Sony lenses to work on the A7 models or A9 mirrorless? And what would be your advice for buying a full sensor? The models without mirror or the A99 II (I have 7 batteries and chargers, 2 flashes HVL-F60M, a Sony's battery grip, as you know apart from the APS-C lenses everything works with the A99 II. My hesitation comes from its design date that is getting older. What do you think would be the best choice for a new Sony camera purchase. Thank you Mr. Gary, your opinion will help me.

I hate questions like these... you're essentially asking me what kind of car you should get. Just as you can't buy a bad car today, you can't buy a bad camera. Your only concern is "which camera meets my needs best?" Which of course I can't possibly answer. If your Sigma and Tamron lenses don't use the screwdriver blade, then you should go for the odd-number adapters for whatever e-mount camera you end up getting. Hope this helps (even a little).

Gary is the best. Short answer. So let me see if I got it right. If you buy LAEA-4 you have the best of best, going for a screw-type lens or electronic and then a crop of FF (Unless you have a NEX or A7R original). So to say, the highest compatibility. The only obvious disadvantage, it's most expensive than all. If you buy LAEA-1 You have the least compatible mount adapter (No FF, No screw lens) but you get the cheapest. Am I correct? Then what if you use a crop adapter, 1 or 2 on FF body? Will it not work or will it give you vignette (But work)? And really, wouldn't it be better/smarter to buy an SLT DSLR body (Especially now the used prices are so low) instead of trying to use a screw-type mount A lens, adapted on Mirrorless (irrespective of being the crop of FF)?
