This is a continuation of Gary Friedman's video explaining the nuanced behavior of the LA-EAx adapters for Sony's E-mount cameras. (The original video appears here: • The Sony A-mount to E-... )
This video explores "Yes, but how do the odd-numbered adapters (LA-EA1 and LA-EA3) behave when you're shooting video?" The answer is "it depends on your camera body - it will either focusing using really bad CD-AF or not at all."
On the plus side, when taking stills, all the great features such as subject tracking and Eye AF work just as well as if a native E-mount lens were used.
This video references an earlier video showing just how difficult it is for a camera to focus with the f/stop closed down (a theoretical problem that Sony has since overcome). The video is still worth watching just so you can understand how hard the problem was: • Focus Tracking Differe...

This is sad that sony didn't make a screwdrive adapter for cameras with pdaf sensor like their whole new line up. It would be great to use something like beercan on new sony cameras but without ligth stealing slt adapter. Imagine that this old great minolta lenses with this crazy sony eye af. it would be awesome.

Hey gary, i was wondering if I'd loose some light when i pair my sony F1.4 50mm with an Sony La-ea4 because of that translucent mirror in the adaptor. Is it worth it to get the sony F1.4 50mm A mount or should i just get the 50mm F1.8 e-mount for shooting in low light scenarios. Which lens is better? I don't want to loose light. Thanks gary😀

In theory, yes, you'll lose 1/3rd of a stop. In practice, you won't notice any meaningful difference. At no time in my professional career have I ever exclaimed, "Damn - if only I could eek 1/3rd of a stop more exposure out of this thing!"

Want the best autofocus. Get a good e-mount lens. The adapters are great though to use manual focus in video using you good a-mount lenses. And there are some lovely a-mount lenses out there.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 5 лет назад
I think it's a cost thing - the other is many of the lenses are screw driven. And the LEA4 is not going to tempt many A mount users If Sony come up with something better it might. There are not only limited AF points (think A57 AF which is passable but below even the A77/99 models), in addition on most bodies (bar the A9 I believe) you get a low 2.5fps cont shooting rate - which is beaten even with the older DSLR's (budget ones) If I priced up my A mount gear - it would cost a small fortune to re-buy those lenses on E mount. A whole heap of cash. The other problem is design/ergonomics - current bodies all have the same angular boxy feel with cramped controls. Unless Sony up their game considerably, I see no reasons to consider E mount. If they continue with it, we don't know you can at the moment still buy stuff.
@actionphotopassion5082
@actionphotopassion5082 5 лет назад
@@MrBazReviews considering the body build and form factor the new Panasonic S1 series is exactly what an A-mount body is. Personally I love the feeling of the A-mount body therefore at the moment in ML I'm fully towards the L-mount Panasonic system. Adding that the adapting of A-mount lenses on e-mount is tons of compromises compared to A native or E native and I don't see any rational reason not to consider all the contenders in ML. Unless Sony is giving us an equivalent of LAEA4 with A99m2 technology 👌

Since a while I do own a sony A7III (second hand) Because of a A77 bodie earlier, all my lenses do have a-mount (all full frame and not ssm/sam) so I purchased also the sony LA-EA4 adapter. Now my question (at last ;}): If I want to select a function as ISO, display or drive mode, the moment I push the center button at the control wheel I receive the message: Please attach a supported lens since the current lens is not supporrted. Have you experienced or aware of any sensor dust issues with (aps-c) Sony cameras? By that I mean dust particles which really hard to clean etc. In my situation, I have a6400+16-50 kit, never detached the lens, never was in any harsh weather conditions and always treated my gear with great care, and yet for some reason had some big nasty dust particles on sensor (after usual city walk with camera and taking pictures here and there). Blower didn't helped, dry cotton swab too, and only after 2-3 wet cleanings (I used vsgo kit) It was kinda ok (there's still dust but visible only at very tight apertures). Two different people at camera stores said me that this isn't kinda normal (particularly this situation when dust gets onto sensor in a camera where lens was never detached before), two people on Sony customer service line said that as well. I was beyond stressed out back then, very important video shooting was on the edge of canceling and now, Sony service recommended me to bring my camera for diagnostics and I'm afraid that they could cancel my warranty because of my attempts of sensor cleaning (which is kinda specified on their web site, that they really could do that), since they said only authorized service centers could do the cleaning, but at the time of my video shooting, nearest service was like 800km from me. (all that situation is kinda sad because these cameras (a6xxx series) costs a small fortune for people in my region (and for me as well), and on top of all is overpriced by about $240, and I saved money for more than a year in order to buy it)

Hi Gary, great videos that led me to buy the LA-EA1. I am curious if these adaptors adjust the equivalent focal length on APS-C bodies? I have a a6400, and my Sony 30mm f2.8 SAM A mount has an equivalent length of 35mm. Is this different with the adapter?
@FriedmanArchives
@FriedmanArchives 2 года назад
That Sony 30mm f/2.8 Macro SAM lens is a "DT" lens, which means it is designed for APS-C sensors. So no crop factor to worry about; it will behave like a 30mm lens on your A6400. (Except the focusing will be quite bit slower, as demonstrated in the video.)

Seems to me that sports and wildlife shooters who have an a-mount camera, are pretty much out of luck when it comes to Sony producing anymore A-mount cameras. E-mount seems to be where they have moved and where they will continue to advance. I've spoken to Sony and they always say the same thing.."We are committed to A-mount and we never plan on abandoning it." Well that is exactly what they have done and are doing, so I can only believe that they say this in order to keep selling their remaining a-mount cameras and lenses. As many have stated, most a-mount shooters have invested a lot of money into a-mount lenses, and now that Sony has decided to no longer upgrade the a-mount line, the value of these a-mount lenses and bodies have dropped significantly, making it even more difficult to make the switch to e-mount. Looks like I will be selling off all of my a-mount stuff before it completely loses all its value and starting over with an e-mount camera and one e-mount lens and waiting until I can afford an e-mount long lens which I presume will be coming out shortly from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina. And it's not like I can switch back to Canon or Nikon, they are going the same route with their mounts on their mirrorless bodies! Adapters are confusing and never work to give you full functionality. Sad...

But why if you're building a very new system from scratch aren't you considering all the contenders? Currently the ML body that is giving A-mount body ergonomics and feeling is the Panasonic S1 series and the L-mount system benefits of the best of the best IQ with Leica in this mount. Then after in terms of ergonomics and lens I'd put Canon ML mount without a doubt. Sony E glass are good but now in my opinion their glass are superseded by the competition. Where Sony has the edge is with AF, but the competition will catch up on this too. If you reset and go from scratch think with a vision of 10 years. SLT technology is abandoned by Sony and is only 9 years old. Personally I have just bought myself a Tamy 15-30/2.8 for my A99m2. When Panasonic is delivering an L-mount UWA lens f2.8 I'll go their route no doubt.
