The Sony FX9, Canon C300 Mkiii or Ursa Mini Pro 12k. What does an Ursa G2 owner upgrade to in 2020?

Unscripted thoughts ahead... I hadn't used the Sony FX9, c300mkiii or Ursa Mini Pro 12k before making this video. Don't expect side by side comparisons or real world test shots here. Just looking at what each manufacturer claims to offer here and weighing up our next move before testing...
HEADS UP: Sorry for the terrible hunting autofocus on the Xt3 with our brand new 56mm F1.2 (at 1.2). I updated the firmware after shooting but it's still not amazing in this setup. Need to test if this is just too much to ask at F1.2 or if I can tweak the settings to keep my face in focus.
BACK ON TOPIC:
I was intending to edit another video, We'd been testing the C300mkii (yes that's mark 2) recording BRAW to the blackmagic video assist 7" alongside the Ursa to see how they matched for color and if the C300mkii could be a good future autofocus interview camera purchase... oh the irony.
But since the announcement of the Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro 12k, the c300mkiii and the Sony FX9 (all within one grand USD of each other)... I've been thinking a lot about which if any of these cameras we may upgrade to soon or later buy.
I still think the Ursa G2 is the best value cinema/broadcast camera out there but it certainly lacks some of the feature of the above listed cameras. But how important or necessary are those features? How often should we upgrade our cameras? Let's discuss.
If you stay to the end there's some discussion about the Fuji XT3 and 56mm F1.2 which I'm filming with. Previously I'd shot with the 16-55 at F2.8, I think surely I've messed something up in the settings but I'm not sure what. centre focus point, Face tracking enabled, auto eye detection is on.
Tracking sensitivity +4 Autofocus speed -3.

Aiming for the Ursa 12k. I believe this camera will have at least a 3-year shelf life, before something else pops up that's extremely better ( in the same price range ). Having an editing software that perfectly complements this new camera is something to not look past or take lightly. It's just a matter of time before footage start to get out there; and this camera will be in very high demand.

I'm very VERY curious about this camera, downsampled 4 and 8k raw without crop would be sensational. I'm in no rush though seeing how great the G2 is for my needs. Can't wait to see more from the camera

Hi, now 3 years on, what would you recommend for a first camera purchase for a small video production company?
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 2 месяца назад
@@andrewdenby8239 if we’re talking similar ballpark cost it might be the Canon C400. Looks like a fantastic all rounder, but I haven’t used it yet. If you’re looking to get something cheaper, potentially used. I’m a massive C70 fan. We have two and an r5c. With the c400, I’m a little put off by the line skipping recording for 100fps+ recording in 4K (not an issue on the C70 as it’s a straight 4K sensor) and the c400 has slightly less dynamic range. But if low light and better autofocus is more your thing than the c400 looks amazing. I’m Waiting to see what Canons next DGO (dual gain output) sensor camera is. I shoot a lot in uncontrolled high contrast situations so dynamic range is hard to go backwards on. We may end up (in the future) with a c400 and their next DGO camera… but honestly we’re in no rush as clients are very happy with the images from our C70s. I’d most likely stick with them (Canon) at this point as we have quite the range of L series RF lenses now and they’re just so reliable. Sony is awesome as well, I just don’t have their lenses

Instant subscriber here. Great content! When you listed what you wanted in an A can I realised you’re a man after my own heart because that is exactly what I want. I have also been thinking about the jump to the Ursa pro 2 but now the FX6 has popped up and I’m still on the fence about the Eva 1.

Thanks for the sub mate! Yeah the FX6 looks like an outstanding option. We are enjoying our g2 for now... have had a few issues with reliability though. When working its fantastic though. Now that the FX6 is hitting the same price range (+c70) it makes things very interesting. For those that haven't used it I think braw is BMW'S secret weapon. It's so silky smooth to work with in post with a fantastic range for compression.... i reckon we'll be testing out the fx9 c300 mk iii and others in the coming weeks (or just after Christmas)
@skatepark02

Alucinor Productions i did see your other videos about the issues you’ve had. I’m almost set on getting the G2 despite this however. I’m still trying to decide if it’s overkill or not for my work as I’m only in my second year of business and I mostly shoot training videos and corporate run and gun stuff. The FX6 seems like it would be more suitable for this but so far the image has not impressed me. Do you find the files to be quite big with Blackmagic raw? I’ll be making the Jump from a GH5s and H.264 All-I. I look forward to your next videos!

@@skatepark02 thanks man! For corporate work I always shoot in q5 braw. It compresses heavily when you don't need lota of data. I have the Pocket 4K and 6K cameras. I love them. However, I do want a higher end camera for luxury car ad work that I'm getting into and VFX heavy Sci Fi. I was thinking about RED, but I lost interest after I realized how over hyped it is. I mean, Canon, Sony, BM and Kinefinity get me more excited than RED. Anyway, endgame is ARRI. But for now, I'm interested in the Ursa Mini Pro 12K. I don't need autofocus or IBIS - never had it from my Canon Xl2 days to my current set up now. But I've always loved the color of Canon, they just seem to cripple their cams and I don't like that. I just need a solid workhorse, with good dynamic range (12 stops and higher), Super 35 sensor capable of 4K 60 or higher, options for anamorphic shooting, and no proprietary bullshit. Oh, thanks for asking and uploading. I like your opinion even if some differ from mine. It's just nice to hear other people and their interests and not be all pissy about it. I think the smart move for "me" would be to skip this generation of 10K video cameras , even tho I feel that owning one would make my life way easier. And this solely based on lens choices. I am into documentary work , and if you are OK with super 35, then the MKX/MK Zoom lenses are really one of the most compelling choices out there for the price , Just Imagine If sony puts out an FS7 mark iii with new improved menu and colors, or I Fuji finally drops a cine camera (Why not they have the lenses, and I own X-T4 so I am allowed to dream) ? Or imagine if canon drops an RF Cinema line to go with the stabilized RF 2.8 Zoom lenses, you would to help you get easy handheld stable shots! and we have not heard from panasonic yet with that L-mount that they will takke advantage of with all those sigma lenses. I were you I would wait , and the G2 still produces some of the best looking footage I think, and I want to believe that Blackmagic is going to put out an 6k Ursa soon, or a pocket 6K with built in NDs , that would be amazing. I agree with you C300 mk iii is what I would pick if I were to buy today, but if they later drop an rf mount cinema cam , I would feel like I had maid a mistake, and they will do it soon to make up for the R5 problems , But I am going to force myself to wait. X-t4 is going hard for now , I am looking closely at MKX 18-55mm but I am not sure because I wan to be sure what mY cinema camera will be first!
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 4 года назад
Hows the stabilisation on the xt4? As Xt3 owners we are thinking about picking up an xt4 to pair it with (with ibis)...the mkx lenses look excellent. Do they come in PL or EF? Also have you checked out the new s35 DZOfilm 2.8 zooms 20-55 and 50-125. Parfocal
@organismx
@organismx 4 года назад
Stabilization is good enough for handheld standing shots, 0 micro jitters! You will do smooth pans handheld if you get a feel for the Ibis and that you stay in sink with it it wrks beautifully. If you use it with the 18-55 kit lens , it’s almost like cheating, you can slowly walk with it if you are extra careful. You will not be running with it especially not at 24fps. But just like you i also own 16-55 for a max image quality to flexibility ratio, but it does not have IS there for with that lens I find myself shooting less from the hip and rather looking through the EVF for a third point of contact and I manage to get smooth shots, and with the 35 f2 ibis woks surprisingly good. For the price of the X-t4, I really could not ask it to do more, besides 30 min record limits and no adapted xlr module. Yes 🙂 I did see the DZO zooms, but keep in mind that The MKX lenses are native x-mout winch mean they are telling the camera at what focal length you are in for the ibis to adjust, not that the MKX lenses are optimized for mirorless handheld setups, but the fact is that you can, and they sell DIY conversion kit for E-mount which is why enven tho I am not a fan of sony, but if they put out a new aps-c cinema camera , which they will, those fujinon cinema zooms all of the sudden make a lot of sens. DZO would be a great choice for Ursa G2 and C300 mk iii !

I honestly don't know for sure. I know they did recently release firmware update 7.7... “The 7.7 update further enhances sensor performance for Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K. This update refines the sensor’s unique technology with fine adjustments to the demosaic algorithm, leading to a more neutral color balance and enhanced sharpness of shadow details for better overall image quality” One of the key features is Improved demosaic to reduce moire effects on fine patterns. As the BMD cameras don't come with OLPF's (which I think is crazy) they CAN be prone to moire and aliasing in a way that a RED or ALEXA for example never would. It's rarely if ever been a real world issue for me, but we have a rawlite OLPF on our Ursa G2. My guess is that it's the potential for aliasing or moire. I don't have a 12k though so can't be sure. If this can be solved algorithmically that's pretty neat, but I honestly think all their cameras should have IRCUT OLPF installed by default.
