I was Marta Von Trapp in a stage production in this show and Marta was accidentally left out of a number of scenes. I mean, she would be the ONLY child not written in the script to be on stage. We used to joke that the sequel would be "The Sound of Music 2: Marta's Revenge." Basically, when he started talking about how all the middle children didn't matter, I was simultaneously offended and totally not surprised. :)

Authoritarian, harshly disciplinary, military style childrearing was unfortunately wide spread at that time and is one more reason fascism took hold of Europe.

I knew an actual family who did that. They were a Black family and they had more than 5 kids. It was so funny. You gotta do what you got to do to keep up with them. I am starting to wonder if they were a military family now.

I watched this movie in 2013, but it occured me so deeply when I was watching, that I had heard some of its song years before in kindergarten, when I was 4. This happened in a chinese guy who didn't even speak the English language until 12, but The sound of music had rooted in my head 10 years before I knew what it is.

In my opinion The Sound of Music is one of the best movie-musicals,everytime I watch it i cant help but feel better and as for the songs pick one any one and whistle or hum or sing the first few notes or bars and I be you want be able to get it out of your head,well thats what I am like.I respect your opinion,I just didnt think it was possible to hate this movie ps as for the nanny reference Julie Andrews almost turned down the Sound of Music because she felt Mara was too much like Mary

cola kidd People are always making fun of "The Sound of Music," yet it remains one of the best loved musicals of all times. I think a lot of people are closet fans. That's ok. As long as they're still happy singing the songs while no one's looking and smile!

Sound of Music was my mom's savior on what could have been a particularly bad road trip when I was four or five. We had a portable DVD player that my parents would take on long car rides, and we'd get to pick a few movies to bring with us. According to my parents, I almost always picked Sound of Music to watch first. The most notable of these sorts of drives we would make was to family reunions with my dad's extended family. It was a two-day trip, especially with small children, and our stop for the night was always at my great aunt and uncle's house just across the Indiana border after crossing through Chicago. Usually, my dad did the driving, but this particular year we were meeting him there, so it was my mom driving my little sister, my grandma, and me. As we were about to reach the outskirts of the Chicago area, my mom could tell that the traffic was going to be awful. Like basically a standstill. Not wanting to deal with two whining kids on her own (she wasn't going to force my grandma to deal with us), she decided to let us start up a movie. I'm not sure if she just hadn't let us start a movie until then (we always had to get at least a little way down the road before they let us start anything, and maybe I hadn't asked about starting it) or if for once I hadn't picked it first -- my sister would have been two at the oldest at the time, so it was definitely me doing the picking. Whatever the case may have been, I picked Sound of Music. The traffic was so bad that it took the entire movie for us to reach our destination, but thanks to the magic of Rogers and Hammerstein, she didn't get a wink of complaining.

I love The Sound of Music. I also never watched the whole movie when I was a child but I always saw scenes being shown on TV sometimes and then one day I saw the DVD in a store and though what the heck, I couldn't stop watching it and every time I watch it it's like watching it for the first time. It must be the most beautiful love story ever in cinema history. Although I haven't watched Carrie's version I probably never will because nothing will ever compare to the real deal and no one plays Maria like Julie Andrews and Captain Von Trapp will forever more be Christopher Plummer!!!!!!
@MrThesper

The "real deal" would be Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel as they were the original Maria and Captain when the play opened on Broadway in the late 1950s.

Funny thing about forgetting the middle children. There was actually 10 Von Trapp children. The musical cut out 3 of them.
@musicaltheatergeek79
@musicaltheatergeek79 7 лет назад
There were 7 original children. The Captain's kids with his first wife. That's who the kids in the movie are based on. The other three you speak of are Maria and the Captain's own children. They were born between the wedding and their flight from Austria, which was a length of 12 years, and thus played no part in the major events depicted in the film. Since the musical greatly condenses the timeline (i.e., completely eliminating the dozen years), there's no need to mention the other three kids, who were small children when they left Austria, anyway. Actually, the youngest was born in America.

I finally after seeing the opening of this movie a thousand times sat and watched it. Like you said I remember it being part of my childhood, but I had never watched it. After watching it I can say without a doubt the best part of the movie is the opening cinematic pan of Julie Andrews singing the Title song.

I have to agree with your take on your thoughts about Miss Underwood's production. As a fan of the original, I'll admit I was disappointed when the new take aired. However, my sister (whom had NO interest in it before) liked it. Quite a bit actually. She sang Sixteen Going On Seventeen for the next few weeks. Anyway, I'm glad that it at least somewhat piqued her interest, and it was great that they created that opportunity.

I love your channel in your critiques. Although I don’t always agree with you, I understand your reasoning. In the case of The Sound of Music, my experience is that it’s mostly beloved by people who fell in love with it as a child. I was one of those where it was a big part of my childhood and I adored it. Childhood favorites are hard to judge for what they would be like if seen first as an adult. Would I find the film sacran and empty and if I had first seen it at 10? Maybe. But it was charming and tuneful and even a little scary at the end as a child.

Little known fact: THE SOUND OF MUSIC was originally intended to be a low-budget, experimental affair, featuring a cast of just 13. So, the same actor would play Sister Margaretta, the Housekeeper, and Rolf. At first, he was also supposed to play Brigitta
@AndrewReinert
@AndrewReinert 9 лет назад
Hammerstein famously asked, "Who the hell cares about Brigitta anyway?" To cut costs when the show was expanded for Broadway, the role was assigned to a goat marionette, as shown here.

I am loving your channel! Here are a few musicals that I'd like to hear about from you! Kiss Me, Kate - a lot really is going on in this musical. even after studyign and doing analysis and dramaturgy work on it, I kept learning more about it! Legally Blonde - I fell in love with this libretto, so did my other castmates. Any opinions on what makes it so great? White Christmas - it's rare that I like a secondary work better and this is based off of the movie, but it seems so much better than the movie. Any ideas why? Pumpboys and Dinettes - I saw this and it is fun, but it feels underwritten. Wondrous Marvelettes - I forget what type of musical they called this, but it is one written around songs that have already been written. Nunsense - Not Sister Act, the one by Dan Goggin. I like this musical and love that there is "Nunsense Amen" which is all the female roles played by men. The Producers - Why is it when you know that something is so wrong that it is so funny? Over the top wrong, too . .

Maybe it's me, my appreciation for this musical has grown a lot in adult hood. Like a lot...it's up there for me. the musicality of the songs alone is pretty incredible and the subtext of them being written by a dying man maybe accounts for the counter intuitive use of the minor key throughout some of its sweetest songs.

It's necessáry tô understand that there are different languages in the "singing theatre", it's Impossible tô explain It here. But the Sound of Músic uses more the language of operetta and not of musical. Many classified It as operetta. In the other hand they had tô explore the story and the songs for It was Impossible glamouros dresses, luxury sets and so on. That's the beauty. In the movie they could explore the wonderful austriannature.

Great look at this show, I definitely agree with the points you bring up about its fundamental non-interestingness, although I can't stop singing those songs....also don't blink!
@AvalonMorley
@AvalonMorley 10 лет назад
But he didn't address the show at all (other than the story about the extra-multi-children community theater production). He only talked about the movie, which is quite different, and far less interesting. It would have been interesting to compare the two, noting what the movie had changed, left out, and added in, and what so many stage versions have since incorporated from the movie. As a child, when I was taken to the movie (in its original run, because I'm old), I was very unhappy that they'd cut my two favorite songs--the ones that kept the whole thing from turning into an unmitigated saccharine and sugar fest. I've since come to appreciate the rest of the songs, and have a much higher tolerance for sweet, emotional content than my eight or nine year-old self possessed. But I still think the show needs those injections of a bit of wryness and even irony, and they help tell a more nuanced and fuller story. Those songs and other differences also have the benefit of making more human, full characters of the Baroness, Mother Abbess, Max, and even the Captain. Having finally seen a beautiful production of the true, original script and score, with all the songs, and gorgeous extended nuns' music, without the songs added for the movie, and without the horrible change they made in the movie, to the scene when Rolf finds the family hiding in the abbey, I now know that that version is, indeed, the best of any of them. So much more rewarding, emotionally satisfying, and fun. Another interesting thing to discuss would be a comparison between events and characters as portrayed in the original show, as portrayed in the movie, and as they were in real life. For instance, from real life, the family boarding a train and riding that to freedom, rather than climbing through the Alps, or Maria's actual age when she went to care for the children (considerably older than the portrayals of Julie Andrews, Mary Martin, or probably the vast majority of women who've played that role).
@dmnemaine
@dmnemaine 9 лет назад
Yet that "non-interesting" film was a phenomenal commercial success, and people didn't only go to see it once, they went to see it multiple times. Pretty good for a "non-interesting" film.
@AvalonMorley
@AvalonMorley 8 лет назад
dmnemaine I don't see why you put "non-interesting" in quotes, since I decidedly did not call the movie that at all, and don't consider it that. I did say that the original poster's discussion of the movie was less interesting than one incorporating more information about the stage show would have been. You're quite right that the movie version was and is hugely successful and popular, and I do think it's well made in many ways, even while I strongly dislike some of the choices they made with it.
@AvalonMorley
@AvalonMorley 8 лет назад
***** Of course you are right, and I still love those songs. I also hold the (judging by my experience) fairly unpopular opinion that "An Ordinary Couple" is a better song for its moment than Richard Rodgers' replacement, "Something Good," with its rather inane lyrics. The national tour that I believe is still traveling around the country improved it somewhat, by tweaking those lyrics. They also gave "My Favorite Things" back to Maria and the Abbess, as it should be, and returned "The Lonely Goatherd" to its proper place in the show.
@AvalonMorley
@AvalonMorley 8 лет назад
***** I do love Lawrence Guittard's voice, though I can't see why that song would be just a solo. One of the great thing about the complete production of SOM that Lyric Stage in N. Texas did in 2013 was the inclusion of all the nuns' music, which was truly heavenly. I think it's only very rarely that it's all included, unfortunately.
