The SOVTEK 5Y3GT tube rectifier does not operate like a 5Y3

NEVER ASSUME the tube you bought operates exactly the tube as marketed, marked on the box, or marked on the tube.
A Sovtek brand tube is a great tube. However, based on some other feedback that I have from other amp builders, the Sovtek 5Y3GT does not operate like a 5Y3. It calculates like a GZ34. It operates like a GZ34, but, the GZ34 is good to 250mA and the 5Y3 is limited to 125mA. You cannot substitute a 5Y3 for a GZ34. If you place this tube in a vintage amp that originally had a 5Y3, the Sovtek may exceed the design and operating voltages. This will lead to component failure of your cherished vintage amp.
Sadly, the Sovtek 5Y3 does not sag. Which was an important design issue for me.
The take-away here is: 1) do the calculations for the circuit voltages, 2) take measurements (voltage and current) of the amp as it starts up and operates, 3) verify that the tube is operating as it is marked and marketed. If not, replace it!

That particular tube is known to behave differently than expected....... there's a few tubes in the JJ line that are a "bit different"...... and I suggest pulling the sheets on these. The Sovtek sheet LACKS the mention of voltage drop.

Yep. Just found out the same. Replaced it now with a JJ 5y3s, and all is good now. Thanks for your video. Great explanation.

I stay away from all newly made Russian tubes. The only Russian tubes I’d use are the old Soviet Union made Reflector tubes from back in the day. Otherwise I only use USA made NOS tubes. I also try to get the JAN tubes when available and priced well.

Does it means the russian GT-5Y3 will work better than common others 5Y3 for replacement of a 5AR4/GZ34 in an amp? Thanks..

The Sovtek 5Y3GT operates like a GZ34. If you need to replace a GZ34, the Sovtek is an option.

I assume this is the same tube Sovtek (used to) label 5AR4/GZ34. It may be a "5AR4/GZ34," but it's not nearly as robust as real 5AR4/GZ34. Maybe it should be treated as a 5V4/GZ32. It's not likely to last as a 5AR4/GZ34 replacement.

Worst case, dropping resistors would give you sag. No excuse for the tube, just saying...
