It just always gets me, how terrible this operation was for the space pirates. Not only are they losing ton of soldiers to wildlife, phason corruption, Rouge experiments, Metroids, Metroid Prime, but when they send out a distress signal the person who answers is freaking Samus. They have the worst luck imaginable. Maybe it's just bad Karma

@@AngryAtlantean And highlights just how awful and decidedly messy the results of the Morph Ball experiments must have been, since everything else seen/heard before is casually dismissed, from Phazon madness and extreme ultra-violence requiring euthanasia to the liquefaction of internal organs, rapid degeneration of brain-matter and more, all just offhandedly mentioned and moved past without a second thought... And yet for all that? It's the failed attempts at recreating the Morph Ball that manage to finally get an apparently visceral and emotional response. I guess it's just that Samus is so much more advanced than anything else in the universe, it makes it hard to appreciate how powerful the space pirates approach actually is. Samus may take out Elite Pirates en masse, but they may not be all that unrealistic when they say that a couple of them will make their army undefeatable. They also might not be delusional when they call the destruction of facilities or death of the test subjects a success; whenever a creature breaks out and razes one of their stations to the ground, that's a creature they can drop on their enemies world and it will do the same to them, except whatever priority target they are attacking will not be as dispensable to them than anything lost is to the space pirates. The same goes for the containment procedures and mortality rate of the creatures. When used in the field, creatures only have to be held until they are where they are supposed to be doing the destroying, and it doesn't really matter to the space pirates how they fare after they finish the job.
@calsalitra4689
@calsalitra4689 Год назад
@@marzipancutter8144 Samus is incredibly powerful, but the Elite Pirates are also not fought at their full potential. We only ever fight single Elites at a time, stuck in enclosed spaces, separated from any support. 1 Elite Pirate is pretty manageable for Samus, but against 2 things might get dicey. 1 can siphon while the other launches mortars, 1 can siphon while the other stomps in to stomp, 1 can siphon while the other creates energy waves (assuming they don't hurt the other Elite Pirate). With 2 or more Elite Pirates in open environments, there isn't much Samus can do to hurt them. Mix in regular Pirates and this gets worse. This might actually be why the Pirates are so optimistic about their performance against Samus, they never intended for Elite Pirates to fight Samus 1v1, and therefore created their simulations under the assumption that the Elite Pirate did have support. The Omega Pirate for example becomes a massive nuisance when Troopers are on the field. The AI is stupid and creates energy waves that kill the support, but while those troopers are around the inability to shoot while being siphoned becomes a lot more dangerous, and the Omega Pirate itself has a much easier time closing in on Samus to claw at her.

I actually like the Ridley lore quite a bit. It helps explain his presence in the series, the fact that he might also be one of the many Space Pirate Frankenstein projects. I don’t think being ‘geoform 187’ necessarily implies at least 186 creatures of similar strength. If anything, considering what we know of the Pirates, it implies 186 failures that preceded the invention of Ridley, a creature that was born to lead them. Ridley could be considered the current Magnum Opus of Space Pirate science, hence why they refuse to let him die. They effectively invented their own king and I think that’s incredibly unique. It also explains almost everything about Ridley in one line.

I vaguely recall a panel in the Manga that sorta explored some of ridleys pre-pirate life. Basically he wants born into the group. He was born into a species of space dragons. For whatever reason the galactic federation initiated a genocide of his species. Ridley most likely is the last remaining member of his kind. Assuming this too is Canon, then presumably this means that ridley lost his morality and become as cold hearted as the pirates are. He simply wants revenge agaisnt the federation and doesn't care how far depraved he has to he to get it

You know, when seen through this lens of psychotic, unwavering optimism and tenacity, Ridley makes a lot more sense. He's essentially that very same cultural tenacity personified, by how he literally dies multiple times and keeps coming back somehow. And at the same time, Space Pirate tenacity has a price: their resources are plentiful but not infinite, and by the time Corruption rolls out, they've literally stretched their empire as thin as can be, and proved themselves vulnerable to infiltration by Dark Samus first, who essentially conquers them, and then to invasion by the Federation, that manages to find their homeworld and raze it. Just like how Ridley is less and less himself with every new appearance, going from a living creature to a resurrected cyborg to finally a zombie animated by Phazon with no will of his own, whose only purpose is to guard a Leviathan seed. Their constant desperate search for more and more power and inability to stop for a moment and think comes back to bite them, for every failure and dark bargain they make leaves them more and more hollowed out, easily hijacked by other powers to do their bidding.
@Zephrese
@Zephrese Год назад
That wasn't actually their literal homeworld/planet of origin, just ONE planet under their control (this is pointed out and explained better within the Japanese version of Corruption). They have a bad habit of taking over planets, and then later claiming that they always belonged to them (like how the Space Pirates that took over Zebes came to call themselves "Zebesians"). Ridley also wasn't a zombie by that point either, he was just merely falling in line under Dark Samus like all of the other Space Pirates at that point in time. It's really no different to how he follows Mother Brain, despite having previously been the leader of the Space Pirates prior to her joining their ranks. He goes right back to following her post-Metroid Prime saga alongside the other Space Pirates as well.

I think it's also worth noting how the space pirates have an active contempt for the chozo and everything they represent. The chozo are by and large a spiritual people, despite their extremely advanced technology. Their technology is largely motivated by compassion and a search for a greater motivation for existence. The space pirates are cold and unfeeling, they can't imagine anything beyond the arbitrary purpose they've given themselves; they're like a hive mind. This distinction is what makes chozo tech, particularly Samus' suit and the force field around the impact crater so impenetrable. The motivations behind chozo tech are so far outside the field of view for the space pirates that they're completely incapable of understanding it. It may as well be magic to them.

The former Bryyonians turned Reptilicus did have at least the Mogenar War Golem Boss that we encounter in Corruption, supposedly one of at least a few made by the last Lord of Science as a blend of their new ways of science mixed with the old ways of magic as their race had been warned by the Chozo (& possibly the Luminoth as well) to do least what came to befall them. I think it's safe to assume that given their more spiritual nature than the pirates its fully possible that some of the Chozo's tech may actually use magic based on the warning to the Bryyonians. This creating an issue that the Space Pirates could arguably never overcome because of their culture or as said in the video a certain lack of it. The Space Pirates can't figure out certain parts of Chozo tech because it may at least partially or mostly use magic which doesn't fit into their very scientifically minded outlook also explaining some fear toward the Chozo Ghosts and inability to figure out what it is that the Metroids are actually removing from their victims.

What's really terrifying about the Metroids isn't that they're tough, but that they can suck out the energy from living beings. Nobody understands how that works, what the "life energy" is, or how Metroids grow bigger as they drain it. Studying these toothy jellyfish-things could unlock discoveries with heavy implications, like how energy converts to matter, or what makes a living thing alive. That's why everyone - the Chozo, the Space Pirates, and the Galactic Federation - want to study them.

Another extrapolated detail I'd like to point out, which regards Ridley, is how they treat leadership, as in what they conceptualize and accept as a leader. It doesn't matter if they aren't a Space Pirate themselves, as long as a sapient creature can provide them with beneficial leadership that furthers their goals, they can become a commander or general. Ridley and Kraid became generals through their ability to provide pure might on a battlefield, and in Ridley's case we're shown, at least in the manga, that he is intelligent and cunning, able to organize and lead entire invasions. Ridley's defeat on Zebes would likely be the whole reason for his demotion, he failed to lead the pirates, and that failure led to the destruction of: a pirate base, a pirate base built on top of a Chozo city that doubtlessly contained advanced technology, AND the death of Mother Brain. Mother Brain was a hyper intelligence biotech supercomputer _created by the Chozo,_ who could also control metroids, what she offers is self explanatory, and it's also clear why she immediately outranked Ridley, despite him being a pirate general for far longer. The pirates are utilitarian. It's also important to note that Mother Brain is the entire reason the pirates even know about the metroids in the first place, as she knew about the project on SR388 during its development. The curious part there with Mother Brain is that _she_ would know everything to do with Samus, she was even the one who designed Samus's Power Suit according to the manga, if you hold the manga as canon then that implies that Mother Brain may have purposefully withheld information on Samus from the pirates.

Metroid is truly a very interesting experience. That experience changes from game to game. Though, the games are always "similar" to each other, they are different enough to give you a different feel of the franchise itself. Metroid 1 makes you feel like you're exploring a vast maze. Metroid 2 makes you feel like you're in a horror game. Super Metroid feels like an adventure. Metroid Prime feels like you're solving a mystery. On and on. I always recommend players start with Super Metroid because that is usually one of the best ones. You can then do any of the rest of them in any order you want. The stories are "stand alone" enough that you can do that. But, if you want the full story of the series, you just play them all. Metroid 1 is different than Metroid Zero Mission (despite one being a remake of it). There's value in playing Metroid 1 as well as Zero Mission as the story actually "changes" some between them. Or, it gets more clear.

When Raven Beak was confirmed to be the antagonist, I was hoping for a decent explanation as to why a Chozo would be malevolent. His goal not only turned out to be simplistic and typical villainy, but also the manner in which he tries is... flawed. He wants power by using the uncontrollable Metroids as bioweapons and to accomplish this, it's stated that after killing the Thoha on SR388, he brought Quiet Robe back to ZDR somehow expecting he'll succeed at the very thing he and his dead colleagues already proved to be incapable of doing back at the Metroid homeworld... Heck, everyone has failed to control the creatures by this point in the series, and Raven Beak is trying and fumbling just like past antagonists. I wished the writer(s) gave him a unique goal/explanation to make him truly stand out from prior Metroid villains. He also had very little screen time overall, appearing only twice in the entire game I think? More appearances might have allowed for opportunities to give more depth to such a potential character.

1:10:29 There is a line in this log that I think is interesting but that you seemed to gloss over a bit: "We believe that Tallon IV was once a stronghold in a great Chozo empire." This line is, IMHO, a great way of showing the difference between the Space Pirate mindset and that of the Chozo. Everything we see of the Chozo throughout all the games, all their logs, implies a primarily peaceful civilization; when they DO talk about weapons (such as with regards to Samus), it is only in terms of protecting and defending life. The Space Pirates, on the other hand, are so obsessed with dominance that, upon first finding the Chozo ruins, they immediately think of an interstellar empire. Taken in context with other logs that the Pirates have concerning the Chozo, it becomes even more telling. The word "empire" implies military dominance; in the mind of the Space Pirates, the Chozo were just like them, except they failed due to lack of ambition and/or silly concepts like "ethics" and "morals". The Pirates can't conceive of a mindset that DOESN'T prioritize dominance, and as such any signs of morality and ethics in a culture strikes them as insanity or stupidity getting in the way. They're not thinking "These were good guys, but good is dumb". They're thinking "These guys had the galaxy on a silver platter, but they lacked our ambition and as a result, lost everything. What a bunch of idiots."

A bit I think is interesting about the pirate logs describing the Omega Pirate is their use of the pronoun "its" to describe it. This seems to me to have one of two implications: One, the Omega Pirate is viewed as an animal, or something on the below the bottom rung of the pirate hierarchy given the dehumanizing nature of the pronoun; or two: pirate culture has no concept of gender. The multiple notes casting mutations in a positive light make me more inclined to believe the latter, but the log about Ridley uses masculine pronouns for him (and in Prime 2 and 3, logs referring to Samus/Dark Samus use feminine pronouns). Maybe pirates themselves don't subscribe to any gender, but then use genders for other species? Alternatively, maybe because the Omega Pirate was born to be a weapon, that's why they use "it" to describe it? I also wanted to note that in Prime 3, Pirates are noted to keep slaves of their own kind and use them as shock troops, per the point you brought up in the video.

The way the higher ups mistreat the space pirates workers paints a really different picture on Space Pirate society. They aren't just monstrous creatures with no empathy most space pirates grunts are victims of an overbearing and uncaring beaurocracy that abuses them into compliance. They're essentially caught between a rock and a hard place. Makes you wonder if their are any rouge space pirates who join kore noble causes or simply run off to live more fulfilling lives. I'd imagine there would have to be given the frequent talk of punishment.

Combine that with the idea that "Space Pirates" aren't just a single species but a conglomerate of different species under the single banner of "Space Pirates" and you get this almost... well, Combine-like idea of their structure. If we do get Kraid logs, I’d like it if their much more direct and to the point than, say, someone like Ridley’s. Remember, Kraid is something like the brute of Space Pirate forces, so I like to think he’s got a somewhat simple mindset to match.
@carnage0685
@carnage0685 Год назад
@@TrinityCore60 Oh yeah, definitely. Kraid isn't like, stupid by any means, but he definitely lacks the intelligence Ridley has. I imagine a Kraid log would be something more along the lines of "Damn, Samus defeated me back on Zebes, but after the upgrades I've been given, this time, I'll crush her!" Something short and straight to the point like that. He can listen to orders, and he can even follow plans, but he either can't or isn't good at making plans himself. He's not the guy who would be doing any research, or leading forces, but he'd be placed at the head of those forces, and he'd be the first to receive cybernetic upgrades, or any other kind of upgrades, after Ridley himself, of course. I think the fact that Kraid was originally going to be the boss of the Phazon Mines, and the Omega Pirate was instead just going to be a sort of miniboss, is pretty telling of his position. He's there to follow orders and be the most important guy to fight Samus, but Ridley is able to come up with stuff himself, such as ambushing her at the Impact Site and destroying the Chozo Relics. We got a little bit of Kraid's personality in Dread, which I'm immensely grateful for, but there's SO much more that could be explored if he shows up in Prime 4. It would be so cool to read logs from Mother Brain's two top guys themselves!
@TrinityCore60
@TrinityCore60 Год назад
@@carnage0685 that WOULD be cool! But although having recent logs from Kraid is possible, any logs from Ridley will have to be clearly written at some point in the past, when he could have actually written them himself. And on top of that, Samus's death animation in basically every game, this one included, shows her self destructing with the suit. Commerce is mentioned other times in the series. The backstory of the Federation is that it was established to protect and facilitate trade between the various galactic civilizations, and I believe Prime 3 mentions Aurora Units being used in business. Regarding the Space Pirates not doing much actual pirating, it is possible that "Space Pirates" isn't their real name, but a name given to them by the Federation, seeing as their first contact was presumably through the Pirates raiding colonies and attacking shipments, the Federation may have believed them to be simple pirates until their true ambitions were revealed when they stole Metroids and set up cloning facilities.

So ironic, the Galactic Federation were against the very things the Pirates did: bioweapon experiments. But as we've seen in Metroids Other M and Fusion, the Federation decided to do just that. Despite the medical breakthrough potential the Metroids' power possess, like the Pirates, the Federation used them for war. Even tried to make them unfreezable, too. Hell, it's possible in Other M, those "Ringleaders" were planning on MB to go rogue so she could send the bioweapon cargo to the capital as some form of coup. They even went as far as to send an assassin to kill anyone who finds out. The Pirates did say in Corruption, that they have spies within the Federation. So, you never know if this conspiracy was in league with the Pirates.
