The Cold War saw a competition between the world’s two great powers-the democratic, capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union. Both sides would fight to have the best technology in space and who could achieve the ‘firsts’.

All those USSR achievements were just for the idea of it. Not that they continued for kong. The first object on the moon was a small rocket that was made to juuuust make it there. The first man in the space was only in it for 1 hour. Same for the first woman. The first dog in space died as the Commies didn't want to spend what was necessary to actually complete the mission and thus the spacecraft was left to burn up. The first orbit was outta nowhere and even then the US did a longer and better orbit. The first space station was made after the space race ended.

So who won? German scientists proving their technology is superior
@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376
they copied my designs. the V-2 is just an enlarged, polished and product improved version of my L-13 i made in 1937. Braun even admitted it himself. "Goddard's experiments in liquid fuel saved us years of work, and enabled us to perfect the V-2 years before it would have been possible." -Wehner von Braun, source page 89-92 The New Ocean: The story of the first space age "His rockets ... may have been rather crude by present-day standards, but they blazed the trail and incorporated many features used in our most modern rockets and space vehicles" -Wehner von Braun, source: history.msfc.nasa.gov/vonbraun/recollect-childhood.html ''Don't you know about your own rocket pioneer? Dr. Goddard was ahead of us all.'' -Wehner von Braun source: www.nytimes.com/1982/10/05/science/a-salute-to-long-neglected-father-of-american-rocketry.html

+Marco PLATIN yeah and i've got evidence of the spy's who sent the information to them too. Gustav Guellich and Friedrich von Boetticher, they opened my mailbox and looked in my mail and even stole reports. Friedrich von Boetticher sent a four-page report to the Abwehr in 1936 Gustav Guellich apparently was at Rosewell and saw a launch of an A series rocket himself he also gave a large report to the Abwehr including critical information about fuel mixtures and an engine Cooling jacket.........a cooling jacket that just so happened to end up in the V-2. sources -Hitler's Spies: German Military Intelligence in World War II. -Rocket Man: Robert H. Goddard and the Birth of the Space Age. -The Game of the Foxes, Ladislas Farago, 1972, although I have yet to find any further evidence that the Germans spied on my work the likely hood is extreme, since like the Cooling Jacket my innovative 3D gyroscopic stabilizer and Control vanes in my L series also ended up in the V-2. You know, the US could have had a rocket program of their own if they had listened to me about value of rockets in the future, and if they did our rocket program would have been far ahead of the Germans since I was the one with the real progression and real talent.

The first space station was made after the space race ended

USA: I won the Space Race! I got a human on the Moon first! USSR: Dude, I got all these other achievements before you. USA: My achievement is way greater than any of yours. USSR: Quantity has a quality of its own. Getting the first human on the Moon was not exactly a race, since it wasn't a particularly high Soviet priority in the first place. The Soviets had a preference for unmanned missions, as they are way more economical, and had already done an unmanned Moon landing before the Apollo 11 mission. The actual added scientific gains from a manned Moon landing were probably not that great, so scientifically speaking, it's a rational use of resources not to prioritize it overly. Still, the prestige and propaganda value of the Apollo 11 mission for the USA was immense. Doing a manned moon landing would probably have been worth it for the Soviet Union simply because of that, to forestall that and thus land an effective killing blow in the Space Race, a finishing move. Except that then the USA would probably have gone for a manned Mars landing at ridiculous expense and used it to claim victory in the Space Race.

I don't think the moon landing was the ultimate end goal in the space race. The Soviet Union built the first space station a couple years later followed by the Americans

Sorry US, but you lost the space race....... The score was 2 (USSR) to 1 (USA). At best you could argue a draw.

Love that the music is the Blue Danube. Referencing 2001 A Space Odyssey. Very Clever.

the US technically never was lagging behind the soviets in the space race, the biggest difference between the US and the soviets in the space race was plublicity and ideology. In the US there was literally nothing that was going to escape the media and NASA and the US realized that and they needed to take great care and precautions in just about everything they did in fear of being smeared by the media if something were to go wrong whereas in the Soviet Union many of the first launches were under wraps and very secretive only disclosing information to the public after each successful mission, in the US failure was not an option whereas in the USSR failure didn't matter so long as they were able to do it before the US (this is why you hear of many theories of lost cosmonauts). Take for instance the first man in space, Alan Shepard was actually originally scheduled to leave before Gagarin but due to safety concerns they pushed the launch back but in the Soviets case it didn't matter if Gagarin survived or not, no one would've ever knew, they would've probably launched Gagarin in the middle of a hurricane if it meant beating the US to the punch, there was no worry for them regardless
