In the mid 1960s the US Navy had a huge barge mounted, level luffing crane called "Herman the German". It was apparently captured from Germany and taken as "reparation" after the war. Allegedly there were 2 more captured. One went to the Russians, who dismantled it and loaded on a train, shipped it east never to be seen again. The British got one, and attempting to tow it across the channel it got caught by a storm and it capsized and sank. The US disassembled theirs and shipped it to Long Beach where it was reassembled. It was a regular worker in the Naval Shipyard which existed where now is the container terminal. Capacity and exact size I do not know, but it was BIG. Allegedly it was built to lift gun turrets from battle ships at full capacity. I have no idea of what happened to it, the shipyard, and pier 9, where my ship often berthed are long gone.

The Gottwald was aquired by then Mannesmann Demag. The Gottwald Quayside crane division was aquired by Siemens Dematic after Vodafone bought Mannesmann and spun off the industrial division. Demag Holdings was created which then took ownership of Gottwald. Demag was bought out by Terex Material Handling before Konecranes bought Gottwald in 2016. Demag mobile cranes are a part of Tadano now, while Gottwald has not made cranes since the Mannesmann Demag take over. Konecranes has no connection with the former Gottwald mobile crane company.

Great video. Please avoid using misleading thumbnails as they undermine your otherwise great work.
