Yeah. Looking at this -- I can remember standing in that very spot looking up and trying to see the top of the buildings prior to going in and taking the elevators to the top. Never once in my wildest imaginations would I think that the tops of those buildings would come crashing down to earth.
I walked past that approximately 13,000 times between 1987-2000. Terrorists took the towers away and people I knew but they cannot take the memories away.
@@twintowers4996 @TwinTowers Stop hijacking the sacred symbol of the Twins, of which you obviously know nothing. This is not a place to scatter your drunken emojis either - we know now you are a genius b/c you know how to spit one. Take your really stupid propaganda somewhere else. And, make some effort to grow up and go to a good school, if you know what that means (non-woke, for a start). Then come back and explain HOW does it mean our freedom and WHAT independence is related to that complete failure ?
I love that statue but correct of I am wrong, wasn't it supposed to spin or something I read once that the Sphere was supposed to spin every hour on the hour or something, still it's a beautiful statue, broken after it survived such horrible events but still representing hope.
@ Edwin Ruskin Nordrike Parker There was a huge hydro-bearing under that SPHERE/"head", and it was ROTATING the "head' ALL the time, at a very low speed !!! It was so slow, as not noticeable to be honest - I never saw it for years from my offices above sky-lobby 78. One year I had to head a new task, w/significant numbers of employees, that would last ~ 2 years, w/possibility of extension. The only available large office space was on the 15th floor, w/some windows facing the Tobin Plaza. That's where my new office was. Glancing thru the windows occasionally as I worked, I could NOT BELIEVE that the "head" was always in a DIFFERENT position! I called my friends who remained above on my old floors (85/87th) and asked them what did they know abt this "head" moving ? NOTHING !! They invented some work related problems they had to discuss w/me on the floor 15, and, w/an unending procession, ALL had to agree that there must be some hydro-bearing underneath, providing the cheap, quiet, uniform hydro-power rotating the "head". Some days later I had to go into the WTC basement (9 floors underground) to sign the WTC documents for OT/after hours delivery of power, water, security, elevator services, etc for my group, as this was an open-ended ongoing lease. I asked the Port Authority tech mgrs I was dealing with, what was the story w/the SPHERE rotating. They confirmed there was indeed a big/quiet hydro-bearing providing for the "head's" 360 degrees so SMOOTH movement, and the soothing water flow into circular "infinity".
@@lblair1354 thanks for the detailed slice of history. I think the sphere rotated once every 24 hours to represent the "World" in World Trade Center. Hate to ask, but what happened to your colleagues on above the skylobby on 9/11?
@@visionist7 24 hr cycle is quite possible. As with other WTC companies, some people survived, some did not. I also lost quite a few neighbors. Many more are gone by now - I was one of the youngest professionals, just out of the uni when joined them some years before the attack. Chicken could not work in the WTC - the wind sway was too much for them. It was a great complex to work in. And, we've had a lot of hilarious fun, despite very demanding/hi-tech work. PA mishandled a lot of the operational/maintenance issues, the New York= cheap way. The current "new" bldg, and the entire site = ugly death trap, and the plan/grid does NOT resemble what was there before 9/11/2001, seems on purpose. Disney's vision of horror, thick layered w/propaganda. The Sphere was great, ahead of the times then and the craziness of now. Am watching russian murderers in tanks in Ukraine - it seems the Kiyiv hotel CNN reports from (next to St Sophia's Cathedral, CNN shows the domes all the time) is the same one I used to stay in during my trips. CNN excellent reporting, Clarissa Ward/Brit/ speaks very good russian. Kiyiv is a beautiful, very European city, planned and built so well before the revolution (1917, not the Maidan 2014), that the soviet communist /stalinist oppressive architecture could not mess it up too much. Long, wide boulevards lined with fantastic, huge chestnuts trees - very much like in Paris. Am not sure what's the current status of those enormous chestnut trees. Still, the genius of the Sphere wins.
The open area within the WTC floors is quite extraordinary. Looking into the ground level it is quite amazing to think the metal "sticks" on the perimeter are holding much of the weight of the building. Engineering and architectural marvel but not designed for what happened on 9/11 😪
