My headcanon works a bit differently. Instead of the PNW states being the children of Oregon Country, the state of Oregon is it in another form. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia are all biologically siblings, and the children of the UK and Spain. So technically, they're the USA and Canada's half siblings and not children, but the successors of Oregon County are widely accepted as their children. As for the other states, I'm too provincial to care about anything outside Cascadia. But I have to say, I appreciate the depth of your video. Thanks for doing your research with Cascadia.

They remember their OG parents, but for a lot of them they have barely any memory cause they were left to fend for themselves. So it depends however many memories they had with the parent is what they remember.

This is amazing!! I’ve been watching you for a while and I love how much you research all the topics you talk about But wait, was the annexation of Hawaii controversial?? I live in Hawaii and here we’ve always learned that it was a wrongful annexation (or ig revolution, though a lot of people don’t consider the businessmen actual citizens of Hawaii), do other places not describe it that way?
@Kai-07Lka
@Kai-07Lka Месяц назад
We weren't taught about it really much, cause I'm not from Hawaii. My teacher pretty much summed it up as “US annexed it after Cleveland left, cause he wanted the Queen back and Mckinley was elected and agreed to annex it” and all of the US’s annexations and stuff are taught as bad so it's just sorta assumed. Idk, it feels weird to take a moral stance that these guys are good and these guys are bad when we will never know what it's actually like(on older history, with more modern it's easier) and it's so many shades of gray. We can estimate based on human experience, however, that's notoriously unreliable and everyone has their own biases(As my Journalism teacher said: It's impossible for people to write without bias, cause we all see the world through some type of bias). It's important to try and look at history without applying modern-day moral standards (taking the moral high ground) to understand what's going on genuinely. Most of what I know is from personal research. It's very confusing to understand, like with America’s flip-flop on it. Cleveland’s refusal to annex, then the Morgan Report, but also the Blount Report, Hawaiian-born people with American and European ancestry started it, and also a council started it that was put in place forcefully by the British(I think?) Also, the Monarchy trying to expand its individual power(and like absolute monarchies aren't good right?),but also the legislature is super corrupt(Which also isn't good), and the American Minister acted on his own accord(sorta?), and then the 1999 apology. Also like the British and French stuff earlier. Also, there's a ton of bias around the subject cause of all the emotions, and my goal is to just figure out what happened, so that maybe I can make a video on it eventually. Saying it's controversial is the easiest way for me to sum it up until I fully understand the situation and what's going on. I thought the revolution and annexation were different things, my school didn't teach about the revolution, just the Annexation. My goal is to try and find out what happened actually, without bias and stuff, just what happened which is pretty hard honestly. If you have any info on it I'd be super interested to hear. I've been trying to understand the revolution for a while. Also thank you!! Sorry for writing so much, I just get excited when I'm interested in a topic.
@Wonkaisakiller
@Wonkaisakiller Месяц назад
@@Kai-07Lka Yeah, I can get that! Opinions here in Hawaii are very negative toward the whole thing for obvious reasons, so obviously someone not from the state won’t have the same biases as us. But yeah! Technically there was a revolution, but that was Hawaiians trying to put the monarchy back into power, as the 7th monarch (King Kalakaua) had basically signed away most of the monarchy’s power due to a group of Hawaii-born (but not Hawaiian) businessmen threatening him and basically replacing all the pro-Hawaii people in his cabinet with their own supporters. He signed a new constitution, which basically gave most of the power to this cabinet. A lot of Hawaiians weren’t happy with this, so they just tried to throw a revolution and get the king to sign a new constitution, giving the monarchy more power, but he refused since he heard they were going to overthrow him and put his sister into power. The annexation happened years later, after he died and that same sister was elected leader (after Kamehameha V died, all Hawaiian monarchs were elected). American businessmen basically other threw the monarchy, and after another attempted revolution, the queen signed away all her power in order to keep the revolutionary’s safe. Idk that much about Queen Liliuokalani, so I might’ve got things wrong, but yeah, generally when people talk about Hawaii having a revolution, their talking about the Hawaiian people revolting against King Kalakaua, as a lot of Hawaiian people saw Hawaii as a puppet state by that point. And yeah, on the monarchy. Like I said before, the first five kings were all related, the first obviously being King Kamehameha, who used guns to very aggressively conquer most of Hawaii, since the other chiefs hadn’t had enough Western contact by that point to acquire them. His next four sons were the rulers, but the bloodline kinda ran out (I’m pretty sure?? My memories a bit fuzzy) and so they began electing monarchs. But around that time, Hawaiian people were losing a lot of power in their own nation, which was why monarchs such as King Kalakaua (who was very passionate about Hawaiian traditions, surprisingly enough) and his sister Queen Liliuokalani wanted to give the monarchy more power. Ultimately they failed, a fact a lot of Hawaii nationalists are still bitter about. Hawaiian history is pretty complicated, since it’s not completely black and white. King Kamehameha partially united Hawaii out of some fear of being conquered by other nations (France, US, British Empire, and Russia). So much of Hawaii’s history is this desperate chase to gain connections and not be conquered like the other Pacific islands. King Kamehameha II abolished the kapu, which was a religious system that was very obviously sexist, but at the same time he burned down Hawaiian religious figures and completely destroyed the whale and sandlewood population. Nowadays Hawaii stands in a weird place, since unlike native Americans, Hawaiians were never put things like reservations, instead they had their culture labeled as barbaric and were replaced as the majority in their own land (Japanese, white and mixed people are the majority here) Things like hula and wayfinding didn’t even make a resurgence till the 80’s, when the Hokulea sailed (the story of the Hokulea is honestly one of my favorite parts of Hawaiian history, if you haven’t heard of it, I strongly recommend learning about it) A lot of people still don’t view the monarchy as bad, since under American control Hawaiians suffered a lot. There’s also this weirdness in Hawaii since a lot of people kind’ve ignore us, except when they want to make a point about American colonization or WW2. Honestly the second I saw Hawaii in your videos I was so happy. People either completely ignore our state or completely stereotype it. (Honestly white Hawaii is so cursed and inaccurate I cringe every time I see it, Hawaii is literally the only state that was never white majority in its entire history) So yeah, as long as you don’t portray her as a literal 3-year old who for some reason hates Japan (Like I said before, Hawaii literally has a majority Japanese population, and most of us are really into Japanese food or media, why do people think there some decade long grudge going on here???) your good. EDIT: Wait, I forgot the one revolution you might’ve been talking about, where the businessmen overthrew Queen Liliuokalani. Yeah, here that’s basically considered the US “annexing” Hawaii, but it technically was a revolution, since the actual annexation was years later. So yeah, there was around 3 revolutions from what I can remember, first when King Kalakaua was almost overthrown by the Hawaiians, the second when businessmen took over Hawaii before annexation and the third when Hawaiians tried to revolt against said businessmen. The monarchy truely lost its power after the third, where, like I said, Queen Liliuokalani signed away her power in order to keep the jailed revolutionary’s safe. (Btw, all “Hawaiians” I talked about were native Hawaiians, since here someone who isn’t native but is from here is called “local” or whatever, while native Hawaiians are only ever called Hawaiian. I kind’ve fluctuated between calling them Hawaiian and native Hawaiian in this comment since I didn’t know if you’d confuse Hawaiian with just people who are from hawaii, since mainlanders tend to do that a lot unfortunately)
@Wonkaisakiller
@Wonkaisakiller Месяц назад
However, I have my own biases like I said before. I moved to Hawaii when I was relatively young, Hawaii is my home far more than any other place though, its not like I particularly identify with Germany, where I was born. I also live on Oahu, the most populated and “white” island, so people who are Native or come from different islands might be a lot more passionate about the situation than me.
@Kai-07Lka
@Kai-07Lka Месяц назад
Thank you!!! That’s really interesting!! One of the big reasons people(or at least why I do that) think of Hawaiians and Native Hawaiians as different things is because that's how it is on the mainland. If you live in Florida you are a Floridan, whether you were born there or not. Native tribes tend to be referred to by their tribe name. Or as Native Floridians(if their tribe is originally from Florida). So that's why I’d use the term Native Hawaiian vs Hawaiian. Also yeah, I've always hated the portrayal of states being stereotyped. My state(Georgia) tends to be stereotyped as racist and stuff and I hate that(yeah there are some jerks but the majority of people don't care). I've tried to make it so it's less stereotyped, like with California and stuff(but the Californian one is hard because the only Californians I've ever met acted just like California’s stereotype). Hawaii is one of the most stereotyped, and I tried to avoid that, I'm glad you think it works!! And I still have biases as a creator as well, I try my best to not let them alter how I portray things. I've read about the sovereignty movement in Hawaii, but I'm not sure how big it actually is, I've read that it's not super popular and mainly supported by super young and extremist Native Hawaiians, and that most people don't care a ton. I just want Hawaii to have a good relationship with the US, other Americans, not hate the Union, and not want to secede. Cause I'm not sure how most Hawaiians actually feel about it. Personally, I'm a pretty patriotic person, so like I just want the states and Americans to like each other, the Union to stick around for a while and people to stop demonizing each other and America. Sorry, I went on a rant there. Thanks for sharing your history it definitely helps lay a better timeline. Quick Note: I view America and the Union as different things from the government. I don't trust the government that much. But I like the Constitution, what America means, the Union, and the people.
@Wonkaisakiller
@Wonkaisakiller Месяц назад
@@Kai-07Lka I get not trusting the government, they’ve definitely not made the best choices for our nation at all. I love America but if our presidents keep fucking up I'll probably try to leave. And, the differences in terms obviously makes sense. Native tribes didn't necessarily follow state lines, so unlike here in Hawaii they generally had a different name, especially since the name for Hawaii and it's people came from Hawaiians themselves, so most people here associate them with it. The sovereignty movement here is really small. You obviously hear about it, but most people here are pretty happy as US citizens. If Hawaii became sovereign no one has any idea what'd happen, but most people think it'll end up with a terrible economy like other pacific island nations. Even if the sovereignty movement is small, there's a lot of state or “national“ pride here around Hawaiians. We have the same flag and anthem as the Hawaiian Kingdom, and we love to put our flag up everywhere and sing our anthem after America’s one every time 😭 Btw, thanks for this, I get really amped up about certain parts of history, including Hawaii for obvious reasons, so it was nice to have someone to talk with about it \(^ヮ^)/
