With little to no friction with the drive wheel and the top piston wheel, they could've added some "teeth" to the 2. Basically using the Coalbrookdale Locomotive for reference.

Or Pen-y-darren, which was made in 1804. Really shows how bad the design was if the first steam loco did your design better than you.

I was thinking that too, its not like the top wheel was running on the rail wheel at the bottom it was separate, so it could have easily (for a given amount of easy coming to cutting gears into cast steel strong enough for the engines torque) had a gearbox, even with two ratios so it could pull hard then shift into an overdrive of sorts to cruise at speed.

I'm thinking by adding teeth to act like a cog would make for need of more pressure from the boiler

I first met this locomotive in the game train station and I was fascinated by its unusual look. I couldn't find that much information about them online back in the day though so that's that but thank you for making this video it was very interesting. Quite a shame they were rebuilt and none survived to this day it would certainly be a unique locomotive to look at.

I suppose steel quality at the time would be the reason why they didn't make the intermediate wheels big gears instead, because it means the teeth would have stripped off the gears with all that torque? I also imagine none of the wheels in the drivetrain were sprung, so I don't understand how they ever thought they would have enough friction between the steel rimmed intermediate wheels with none pushing hard onto the other.
@jozg44
@jozg44 2 года назад
I'd be inclined to agree - you'd probably need helical or double-helical teeth to handle the loads involved if the top and intermediate wheel rims were geared to each other. At the time helical gears could not be built at the strength and scale needed and double-helical gears hadn't been invented. You'd probably need some sort of lubrication system for the gear teeth, too, which would be very impractical and probably just end up getting oil on the drive wheel/rail interface! I really can't work out what the logic behind the Fontaine was. Just fitting 7.5ft-diameter driving wheels would have provided exactly the same 'gearing-up' effect, and as the video showed locomotives with drivers of a similar or larger size were far from uncommon in Britain and Europe. As to the friction between the intermediate wheels, the Fontaine did apparently have a system of compressed air rams to push the upper wheels onto the intermediate rim, which could be adjusted by the crew - presumably you'd increase the force for starting and then reduce it once up to speed. Clever, but adding to the pointless complexity!
@Trainskitsetc

They had an air powered mechanism that could vary pressure of the upper axle upon the lower axle to increase or decrease adhesion. This is before they knew a great deal of what we know today so expect some weird ways of doing things because it's just the times.

Definitely look into the Scientific American Supplement issue 302. there was actually 2 and a half engines built. the second engine built had a drive rod from the middle wheels to the rear making it a more traditional 4-4-0 layout. Sadly even the rebuilds didnt last, as the two known ones number 324 and 1403 were scrapped in 1911 and 1927 respectively. Though I am happy to report they did go faster and the engineers on them did love them. Side note, I designed the lego version. Just a little self plug. hehe

I find it funny that while the 4-4-0 is only associated with the old west thanks to movies mostly, and is a design that was rather quickly phased out. even I didn't know they weren't all that common (at least in their era as they were wildly used across the US for a short period before more efficient engines were invented) until very recently. also of course we Americans would try something stupid like "I see you like wheels, so I put wheeled wheels on your wheels". we like our transit both inefficient AND dangerous XD

Not sure where your getting your information from but I think 25,000 4-4-0s built in America over a period of 50 years would qualify them as _VERY_ common and long lasting and there's nothing stupid about experimenting to try and improve locomotives (or anything else for that natter). The development of the steam locomotive has produced many experimental designs, some not as successful as others admittedly.
@Random3716
@Random3716 2 года назад
Don't know what you're getting on about, because 4-4-0s were the most prevelent wheel arrangement of steam locomotives in this country for a large portion of the 19th century. They were built in huge numbers beginning in the early 1840s and ceased to be dominant in the late 1880s. They certainly weren't the only type of locomotive in operation following the Civil War, but they were still highly prevelent. An estimate by John White Jr. (who literally wrote the books on 19th century American railroads) placed the 4-4-0 as represrnting 85% of all steam locomotives in service in 1872.
@TheGreyTurtleEntertainment

I had never heard a rubber tire proposed for these, and it definitely would've made them work, for a limited value of work, as they would still be using a rather stupid way to achieve the gear-up as opposed to just running a big driver to begin with.

@johncochran8497
@johncochran8497 2 года назад
Looking at the design, I'd say it would have made no difference at all. The key concept that the engineer of that design made was confusing RPM with circumference speed. Look at it. Big wheel on top, driving a slightly smaller wheel on the bottom, with the smaller wheel on the rails. But the circumferential velocity of the top wheel exactly matches the circumferential velocity of the bottom wheel, no real change in velocity.

I get that there's a load of extra complexity to it, but if you're gonna stack wheels on wheels for torque-multiplication, you might as well just shove a gearbox in there. It doesn't have to be a proper "Transmission". Just has to have a single reduction-gear in it.

it was a spark arrestor. as some locomotives burned wood which gives off sparks, a mesh at the top of the funnel (which I think was similar to your fireplace mesh) to stop sparks from coming out and potentially starting fires. most Western/Southern locomotives burned wood due to lack of coal in the area (such as Central pacific, and the Western and Atlantic)

Thanks for covering this curious machine for us. A very brave try, but if you don't try an idea out, how do you know if it will work or not? The Philadelphia & Reading had some rather more conventional 4-2-2 type engines, with Wootton fireboxes and 'camelback' cabs which did work quite well, but which were overtaken by increasing train weights. Still, they were very nice engines aesthetically.
@gus.smedstad
@gus.smedstad 2 года назад
Every time I see something like this, I wonder what would have happened if someone had attempted a simple gearbox. The Shays were gear-driven, but didn't have any way of changing ratios, so they were just as much trading top speed for torque as the more conventional layouts. My best guess is that no one tried it because machining was still too crude in the 19th century, and there's the problem of the sheer amount of raw power involved.
@23PowerL
@23PowerL 2 года назад
Nobody tried for the same reason electric engines don't use gearboxes. Steam engines scale linearly with speed, a change in ratios doesn't do anything.

The word "gear" might have been a good idea. I know Shays and Heislers gear down to have less speed and more torque or uphill work, but I am not sure about gear up. If there's a way to transmit power in a variable way to the wheels it'll be okay, just get a bigger boiler and pistons. Still, having an additional load on the middle of the engine making it top heavy wouldn't be good in the long run.

I always find it fascinating what ideas and inventions they come up with with regards transport, some of which are mind boggling. The 19th century circular Russian warships. Good at spinning around but of little use otherwise. The original Spitfire design which used part of the wing as the radiator of the engine. What happens when hot water from the engine hits the cold water of the wing. And this idea for increasing the power of the steam engine. I do wonder why anyone thought this would be idea was viable. As the aim has got to be putting all the power to the driving wheels this will not fulfil that aim. In fact on cold and icy days I would be surprised if any power would be transmitted to the driving wheels. It seems to me the 4-6-0 arrangement would be more of an improvement, which is what happened in the UK. In the UK the Great Eastern Railway took the same 4-4-0 express passenger engine and, having reduced the driving wheel diameter slightly, made it into a 4-6-0 express passenger engine. A much more power engine.

If you think writers come up with some dumb engine/ship designs, I suggest you take a peek at Fontaine locomotives. They are… interesting real-world relics. Phrases like ‘proved to be inferior to every other engine in use’ get applied to them. Just because an idea is dumb and won’t be practical doesn’t mean nobody will ever try it out at large scale. Likewise, High-tech doesn’t mean ‘smart’ or ‘intelligent’…. But such designs don’t get to play that card if they don’t call it out in-story. ‘One ship that splits into 3? Why not just build 3 ships?’ - Thing the doctor should have said.
