Fix your hand technique:
► www.Drumeo.com/hand-technique/
Want to improve your sticking consistency and strengthen your non-dominant hand? Play along with Heather Thomas and work your way through page 1 of one of the most important drumming books: Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone.
Heather practices it per the book’s instructions: repeat each exercise 20 times. The advantages to practicing this way is that you need to stay focused for a long period of time, which gives you an opportunity to relax in an almost meditative way.
Grab your practice pad, ideally in a place where you can stand, and make sure you’re nice and centered in front of it. You’ll be playing for about half an hour, so get comfortable and try to relax!
In this boot camp video, Heather plays it at 152 BPM. If this is too fast for you, take it at a slower tempo on your own until you’re ready.
This page starts with singles, then goes into doubles, paradiddles, inverted paradiddles, single mills (reverse paradiddles), and a variety of other single and double stroke exercises.

One of the undervalued aspects of this lesson is the fact that (AFAICT) it was done in a single take. If a person is going to create an instructional video like this, it takes some skill to be prepared for a 30 minute routine like this. Yeah, there could be editing I haven't noticed, but I think what shines through is Heather's comfort with the material. No, there isn't a ton of stuff to remember and learn for the clip, but it's still something the average drummer isn't going to be able to mimic without prep. That's inspirational here in a subtle way. Kudos to her for pulling this off. ps. props to Drumeo's Jared and Dave for doing similar things in the past.

Thanks for noticing! I'm not perfect with the material but I certainly have spent some time with it and I know that it's helped me a lot. I noticed that it's really pretty hard to get through the whole thing on your own, and that because I've put the time in I hoped I could help others get started with more encouragement than you'd normally get if you were just practicing alone with a book.

The professionalism in this video show by Heather is incredible. So talented and committed to her craft. I've been using this video for the last few weeks. CURIOUS do you only use these rudiments? Or do you practice other ones? Wish we had all of them on the screen notated. makes it so easy to stand in front of my TV with the pad and follow along.

Wow is that hard at 125% speed. I am now comfortable at normal playback speed, but it was getting a little sloppy st 125%. One addition I have made playing at normal playback is to add a foot pattern, a "samba" pattern. The &2 3, &4 1 pattern. My foot isn't the best, some patterns throw me off a bit more than others, but it is getting better. (And, if I stop the foot, the hands can sleepwalk through the thing.)

Honest question: How do you know you're ready for page 2 in stick control? You can spend a lifetime in Page 1 since a metronome can go as fast as 270, for example. Does it make any sense to go to page 2 if you're still not fast/good enough with the material in page 1? Once agan, you could spend a lifetime with page 1....

This is great to practice along with. Thank you Heather and Drumeo! Another way one could practice with this video is to modify the playback speed. This would, of course, change the tempo. The following playback speeds effect the tempo accordingly: 0.25 = 38 BPM 0.50 = 76 BPM 0.75 = 114 BPM 1.00 = 152 BPM 1.25 = 190 BPM 1.50 = 228 BPM 1.75 = 266 BPM

And, the part you ignored for the sake of attempted comedy: Relax. With regard to her earlier statement about any stress you've been holding will likely present itself during this exercise, that's often when people realize they ARE holding stress somewhere in their body. I, for example, tend to carry it in my shoulders and/or lower back. But I don't always realize it. However, once those areas start to ache and hurt, not only am I then aware of the issue, but I can work to consciously relax those specific muscle groups to release the stress/stop the pain.
@PatrickBuzoDrums
@PatrickBuzoDrums 4 года назад
@@schaddalton well, yeah, you're right, but, my point is not that what she teaches is bad but rather that it's not good didactics and shows some lack of competence on the teacher's side. A teacher can't know how to fix all problems but should at least know how to fix the problems you actively point out. If one of my teachers ever told me about a problem and would just tell me to basically get over it I'd be looking for a new competent teacher. I don't want to hate at all, please, I don't want to be misunderstood. But much of the information that is on the internet can be quite harmful and stand in the way between aspiring musicians and a long lasting and sustainable career.
@sticktrik

@PatrickBuzoDrums
@PatrickBuzoDrums 4 года назад
@@sticktrik yeah, definitely not a great teacher. I do agree with you that she's sharing some potentially harmful information. but she's not the only one to blame, afterall Drumeo probably approached her to make a lesson and maybe even told her on what subject. I can imagine that declining an invitation from drumeo must be really hard and no drummer hoping to grow fame would ever do decline the invitation, even if they thought they weren't qualified to do a lesson themselves.

This is sooo incredibly useful. I’ve been a drummer ever since I could walk, but after I graduated i foolishly decided not to pursue music and basically quit drumming all together. After 3 years of being depressed and borderline suicidal I realized that no matter how much money I make, nothing can fill the gap that was left behind when I quit music, so I’ve decided to toss caution to the wind and follow my dreams. Naturally when I came back to the drums i had lost a lot of my speed agility and control, and this was a perfect place to start 3 days later and i was flying through these a 200bpm without effort. You guys are amazing, thank you.

The lack of experience forced me to remain hyper-focused, however, I also tried to stay as relaxed as possible. I improvised my way through the paradiddles since I only recently learned the word "paradiddle," and haven't practiced them yet. Following Heather's lead, I did pretty well overall. I kept up with the 156 BPM and made it to the end. Awesome workout! I'll be back!

Wonderful. Drumming has always been meditation for me. When I play live I connect with the band, then when I feel completely relaxed, I notice I use proper grip, don't move my arms too much, and my mind and body are so in sync. At this point I observe, things come, then they go. Drummers who figure this out (I know quite a few) have such a wonderful way of training the mind to let go of negative energy and breathe correctly and while I'm meditating, my cardiovascular system is getting a wonderful workout. Thank you for this video. It's the first book my first teacher ever gave me, learned how to read from book too. I love how they never change the cover. Great video, cheers

Don't question the tempo or the method, this is exactly how this book is supposed to be practiced.This book is a wrist control book so don't use your fingers while practicing. Both the hands need to be mirror symmetrical, both hands need to come to the same height and the sound that you get out of your sticks from both the hands must be the same, hit exactly the same spot when practicing, advanced drummers can hit the stick in a radius that of a small coin.Sit in front of a mirror if necessary. Now practice three kinds of strokes full/half/down, full strokes start almost vertical and end almost vertical, you can interpolate what the other two strokes do. Don't put any ghost notes or accents, there are different books for that purpose.Don't phase out as you are practicing. You must be completely aware of what is happening to both your hands .Do this for a month without questioning the system and you'll notice astronomical differences in your playing.

I’m a lefty on a right handed kit, so getting around the kit is quite a challenge sometimes. I’ve been working on my right hand but man it just cannot go as fast as my left to save my life. This helped a lot, thanks!
@fVNzO
@fVNzO 4 года назад
I'm left handed too but it really doesn't matter for drums. Playing on a kit with the hi hat on the left/ride on the right simply forces the right hand to play more notes than the left. This would be opposite if I started out on a flipped kit or used my left hand on the hi hat etc. - handedness does not matter. Playing the other way around just as you would normally is the easiest way to get parity in the hands.

Thanks Heather! Your attention span and steady gaze are a real rare jewel in this highly distracted society. Second run through this for me, found it a couple days ago. After being in the beginner almost intermediate phase of my drumming side of music I got my first gig in a band as drummer at age 49. This kind of thing gets me into shape so I don't get worn out onstage, while challenging my hands to do unfamiliar patterns is making daily improvements in my overall kit playing as I can devote a lot more attention to what my feet are doing with the increasing ease of my arms and hands keeping their patterns going without being interrupted by the feet. It's great to be able to see your hands and not just be reading the notes from the books.

This is the kind of stuff we did in drum and bugle corps everyday first thing in the morning. It got everyone focussed and on the same page but the first week of this it would make the toughest of us hurt everywhere. At camps in the fall and winter before we had tryouts this stuff would weed out the wimps and impatient want to be drummers.

I love this! take video :P As for re-gripping, I feel like I've found a grip that's pretty steady and not too tight, but I'm sure it took years for that to develop! If you're re-gripping a lot, take some video, see if there's anything happening that's losing your resting position's center.
