The Story Change That Broke The Forgotten City

When developer Modern Storytellers wanted to make its successful Skyrim mod The Forgotten City a full-fledged game, they planned for a two year reskin. What they didn't know is that the small decision would derail the game's development for years.
The Forgotten City is a murder mystery, stuck in a time loop, set in an intricately designed Roman City. It's so well realized, that if you didn't know, you might assume the game was built from the ground up to always be that way. In actuality, it started as a Skyrim mod set in an underground Dwarven city.
The original mod was a huge success, amounting in millions of downloads and garnered several writing awards including Best Interactive Media from the Australian Writers' Guild. Designer/writer Nick Pearce enjoyed making the mod so much that he left his established career as a lawyer to pursue game development full-time and bring the mod to life as a full-fledged standalone game.
What was intended as a two year endeavor to remake the game in a Roman setting turned into a cascading list of problems that would cause Nick Pearce and his development team, Modern Storytellers, to rewrite and rebuild the game from the ground up.
This is the story of how changing the setting broke The Forgotten City.

I hope games like The Forgotten City, Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn end up becoming a whole genre with many titles. I really like these types of mystery-solving games.
@garkham
@garkham 2 года назад
For me they're "puzzle adventure" games and the genre already exist since at least Myst (and revive since at least The Witness) but I know some papers who says like you that there are all new "Brainvania".

@@garkham i can see what you mean, but i feel with especially the forgotten city and outer wilds theyre such a narrative take on it that i struggle seeing it as *puzzle* adventure in that same sense. obra dinn is more in that more classic puzzle type of puzzle adventure, but yea, its weird to think about

Have you ever played 12 minutes? It's also a game where you re-live the same 12 minutes everyday until you solve the mystery. It has 6 endings.

GREAT game. I liked the way it handled the rogue type elements without having to repeat the same actions/discussions over and over again. Very engaging story. Well worth playing until you unlock the best ending.

Although this game is on game pass, I actually bought it when it was on sale and I don't regret it at all. Such an underrated and complete surprise of a title. This and guardians basically had my two favorite stories of any video game of 2021

It was certainly sobering learning Nick’s story, and just how dire it was to piece this game together with a team of like 3 people over 4+ years (not including the mod he made). Great game.

Fantastic game, and fantastic expose. I dig your reporting style, Kurt. It's obvious you put a lot of time and research into your pieces, so whenever I see one of these videos pop up in my feed I know I'm not wasting my time. Keep up the great work!

I'm commenting a year after this video came out and I have to say that this game is great. I started and finished it in one day because very few times I have seen a game made with such effort, by a really small team, and with this palpable care. Thank you!

Love the domino metaphor re: both doing it over and over as well as how elements are linked together and one change can have a… domino effect. Nice!

Thank you so much, bc! Hearing devs stories on how quickly something can just crumble apart is vastly sobering. I think it was the Weird West dev that told me making games can be like having to reinvent the wheel every single time. And that sticks with me.

Wow, perseverance, passion, jumping off a cliff and building wings on the way down--I love the story behind the game. I've never played a time-loop game before and was a little lost even after I got to my first ending (3). I went through again and got to ending 4 this time. I love the game. It was engrossing. The characters and their world are now enriching my everyday world.

Same! If anyone in the comments is down here reading this, you HAVE to play both of these (give yourself a breather between the versions, though). I was always going to play both if only to support the creator, but the domino effect changes of removing the TES setting made the standalone The Forgotten City a delightful surprise for me; same excellent writing that carried the mod, but everything was a new experience that felt more like a spiritual sequel!

@DatzTragicNewPatek

I would say that outerwilds is a more extreme version of this. I actually completed Outerwilds first and stubbled upon this game by chance. I drew comparisons right away. The Forgotten City can be completed in around 10 game hours without any guides. Whereas outerwilds took me several weeks to pick apart. And I needed a little bit of outside help. If you like this game and want an extreme challenge version of it, but with more gameplay mechanics. Outerwilds is a perfect experience. You do trade out voice acting for text. And you need to do a lot of you’re own “figuring things out”. But that’s what makes it a great challenge. There’s almost no hand holding and that makes for an very rewarding exploration of the world.

The original. The Skyrim mod was far and away better. Especially the voice acting which is very telling. Paid work will never be at the same level as work done purely for the passion.
