I can't stress enough just how much of an impact this game had on me back in high-school. While everyone else was obsessed with SF2, I was all about Fatal Fury games and World Heroes.
As soon as I saw it was 53 mins I made sure to grab a beer, and take a beautiful stroll down memory lane. That was amazing! Thanks so much for this vid! I only recently picked up an AES after spending my entire childhood dreaming of owning one. Playing the games in arcades for hours. I never played the first FF as a kid, but after I picked it up recently I honestly fell in love. There's a certain charm to it and the jank makes it kind of fun to me. Granted SF2 is the better game, but I think it's as you put it in your video, the story, the sound, the characters..that's what makes this game truly unique. Also I think Geese survived by landing on the tent canopy you normally find on building entrances, and it broke his fall. Plus the muscley back. lol!
@@Betoven81 How he mentioned that he couldn't make Street Fighter II as good as Capcom did even though Street Fighter was his creation. Capcom took what he made from the first game, and made it better than even he could've imagined. Not many people would take that so well.
Interesting, in fact "pão" (with a tilde accent) is bread in Portuguese. But Japanese artists probably had a hard time understanding that. From my Japanese-Brazilian ears, "pao pao" as is said in the game sounds something Chinese, for some me. But bread bread coffee (pão pão café) makes more sense indeed.
Southtown was special. I don't think any other fighting game franchise has a setting as fleshed out as Southtown, the place is a living, breathing city, and each stage is a specific location denoted on a map in which your tiny little avatar moves between matches. And this city has it all, residential areas, slums, bars, night clubs, shopping districts, factories and so on. Its all a bit primitive in this first game though, which takes place entirely on the small peninsula area to the west on the city, but later Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting titles greatly expand on the various locales, with both the Pao Pao Cafe, Sound Beach and Geese Tower introduced here becoming staples of the city and of SNK.
I love how Fatal Fury 3 shows a full map of the city, then transitions into a panoramic shot of the location where each fight will take place. It's also neat how FF3 shares many locations with FF1. The Pao Pao Café, Howard Arena and Sound Beach are instantly recognizable.
I'd argue Metro City, but it took Capcom a long while to fully embrace it even though SF has had its fair share of stages (usually just one) in SF games.
how geese could've survived that fall: 1)he landed in a garbage dumpster full of garbage bags. 2)just like on naked gun he bounced off of the tent thing wiped himself off.😂 3)maybe he had wings an flew. 4)or had one of those mats stunt guy's use to land at the bottom.
Oh man! My man Alec is back having fun as usual. And what a great way to enjoy our Sunday evening seeing him discuss about the story of Fatal Fury: The King of Fighters... Now this will be a real treat to listen in on what you have to say bro. 8^) I just came in with my din-din of Kentucky Fried Chicken and this will really be a fantastic way to sit back and relax to make my meal a little bit tastier.8^) Thank you as always for your hard work and dedication Alec. Always in the mood to view your content bro. 8^) Anthony..
I actually first came across the Fatal Furry franchise when I rented three anime movies. It actually stuck with me and when I found out it was a fighting game series. I ‘m not the biggest fan of fighting games, but because of those old films I always have to play Terry Bogart any time I get a chance
I had the same background playing the genesis version to death and loving it prior to the neo geo one. Did you notice that Bauhaus is written on the back of one of the cars in South Town Village? In Dream Amusement Park you also see (as mentioned in the video) references to the Cure and Laibach... thats at least 3 references to bands of the time... someone at SNK was a fan...anyway, great video!!
@@BasementBrothers i just love knowing that someone at snk probably owned lp's i owned at the time... then again you've already gone over their love for some of my favorite films like black rain... hits me in the feels ya know...
As great as SFII was, when I was a teenager I really preferred Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting. The character designs, world building and storylines made it feel like I was playing through one of the cheesy martial arts movies I used to rent every weekend. Plus there was always a crowd for the SFII machine but I could get onto FF straight away :)
Dear NEOGEO guy. I just wanted you to know how much your vids about the neogeo games in order coming out- have got me through a very tough time. Ive recently lost my dad. My dad bought me my entire sega collection and more but life dictated i had to sell all about a decade ago and for a too low price... although most of my machines were not mint - but more well loved with many many many miles on the clock so to say!! I never got to own the mythical neogeo but i am very greatful for emulation. Thanx to emulation i have my entire collection back plus all the arcades i dreamed of...and of course neogeo. Having an 8bitdo mini controller hanging off my car interior mirror with everything on my phone is pretty cool. Regardless, thanx to dad we will be set up for life as we were dirt poor, so id like to get a consolised mvs at some point. He left me a property, a nice car (Peugeot rcz) and about 160k. However, this takes time to come through. I miss him so much and would trade it all in to have him back. Alas thank you for getting me through with hard depression. I know a lot about the neogeo and thought there wasnt anything else to learn... but ive learned a lot from your uploads. I also adore you intro. Reminds me of my nephew and i playing mega bomberman on gene/drive on a tiny black and white tv, whilst bein shouted to "go to bed" because even though the sound was down, we laughed a little too hard and loud alertin the adults 😂 Anyway. Much love and look forward too the next upload. Much love Your Order Of Magnitude (A car crash of a channel....)
I’m going to be honest is I liked the coop in the first fatal fury for arcades but other than that I’m not a fan of the game at all. Controls are clunky, inputs feel way off, hit boxes are all over the place. For me the fatal fury games didn’t start becoming good until fatal fury special and then the real bout games were my favorite in general. Good video
oh wow, i had no idea you guys did NEO GEO game reviews! i loved the system and games. when everyone else was going 3D SNK stuck to their guns and gave us some of the best 2D games ever
I know I'm probably the only human being on Earth that does this but I go back to fatal fury 1 to play it all the time but I very rarely go back to even super Street fighter 2 let alone the original release of Street fighter 2 Funny thing is I can't get into fatal fury 2, special and three. Especially fatal fury special. I never understood why the Japanese love that game so much
Awesome vid but why do you think Street Smart is not related. The main character Karate Man was later used with the moniker Mr. Karate for the game Art of Fighting. So the character in Street Smart is a prototype of Takuma Sakazaki. It also is SNK's first one on one fighting game (second if you count Main Event)
This owns. I have really come to love the original Fatal Fury in the last few years. One note: The PS2 re-release of the game got an arranged soundtrack which is worth checking out.
Thanks. I should have mentioned it in the Neo Geo CD section. I usually don't pay attention to the re-releases in the form of collections and digital downloads, so that was overlooked. Most of those arrangements stray a little too far from the source for my liking. The other game I can think of that got an arranged soundtrack courtesy of the PS2 is KOF 2001.
@@BasementBrothers Hey no worries. You got so deep into the weeds on this one, I was like "can't wait for him to talk about the arranged soundtrack on PS2!" Ha ha! Just wild, and to SNKs credit that they went back and did that work.
Notice the music in Fatal Fury that was borrowed in part from Street Smart. Now also notice that one of your choices in Street Smart was Karate. And that in Art of Fighting Karate wound up being a character and ultimately Ryo's father. Seems like a lot of people don't make the realization of the relation of the Karate in one game and art of fighting as it is. But neat that it was picked out here that the music was re used.
I dreamed of having a Neo Geo as a kid. It wasn't even a thing you could find at my local stores. Kids who DID have them (asians) were kids who's families would take trips to New York on the weekends. I wanted one so bad but somehow knew I'd never get it. Kids at school would talk about how expensive it was. But this Laundry spot down the block from me had the arcade cabinet for all the Neo geo stuff. Fatal fury, World Heroes, Samurai Showdown etc. God I spent tons of quarters there. Those games were so amazing at the time. Especially as an American kid who only had access to Street Fighter and MK. Eventually, like 1994, I got a copy of Fatal Fury 2 for SNES. Then played it all in ports later in life. But man, when all this stuff was new to you, it was groundbreaking and revolutionary. The graphics.
I remember an issue of EGM where some entitled douchebag in the mail section was gloating about having a NEO GEO AES console and being able to buy the games so he was disappointed with their lack of game coverage. Thankfully, through emulation and near perfect console ports, anyone can enjoy them now without breaking the bank.
It's quite rare that I comment on RU-vid but I really wanted to say that your channel is really amazing and became in few days, one my favourite one RU-vid. I discovered your channel thanks to your video on Legend of heroes III: White witch on pc-98. I completed the remake on psp few days ago and I was wondering how does the game look on original hardware. I love Japanese games but Japanese pc always was my blind spot (with pc engine). I really enjoy how you show the original packaging and explain all the process which allows you to play. Same for your neo Geo playlist, I love the fact that you follow the productId order. At the time of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, I always looked at the productId on the side of the box and tried to order my collection by this number. I am currently stuck in the bed due to sickness (not something very bad just a strong flu) and your video really kept me entertained. I also learned a lot even about games that I already know like Fatal Fury as you explained a lot of details and reference. Thanks a lot for your video !!! PS: I will be very interested to know more about exclusive Japanese rpg on pc engine like Tengai Makyō. I don't know if you plan to pc engine playlist as a lot of famous games looks to be port from pc-88 or 98. I saw that there is a fighting game spin-off of Tengai Makyo on Neo Geo so you will maybe talk about the series during this time. PS2: In one of your old video, I think it was Tokyo Xanadu ex+, you said that you never played persona. I hope you had the occasion to play at least Persona 5. I know they are quite time-consuming type of game and it aren't really compatible with adulthood (I was quite lucky to do 3 and 4 when I was in highschool) but they are really good J-RPG which is quite rare nowadays.
@@BasementBrothers last thing I forgot to say in my long message is that I really love the fact that you compare the original game with each port and remake. It is really interesting to understand the legacy of a game and which version it can be good to play. I am sure I am not the only one who enjoys that. Thanks a lot for your reply :)
For me, nothing surpassed Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 2. Playing it on the Genesis, I loved the gameplay, bright graphics and music. Close to Street Fighter II in terms of enjoyment.
41:06 Some of the events of the earlier FF games happen in KOF but everything from Real Bout on forwards doesn't happen in the KOF timeline, so Geese has never died there
THANK YOU SO MUCH for giving Nishiyama-san his past due. I'm really tired of people giving Tokuro Fujiwara and Akira Nishitani all the credit for the stuff he and others like Koitchi Yotsui and Yoshiki Okamoto were responsible for. Even Jeremy Parrish falsely claimed that Fujiwara produced Mega Man 1, when that isn't true. This video was worth the wait, and is probably one of your best by far.
What Fatal Fury did on NeoGeo was be a game that told something of a story, and allowed the 2nd player to be involved in the 1 player mode fights. And in regards to that aspect of things, it holds up. It also had a lot of personality. The backgrounds are much more lively than on SF2. Yes, the game doesn't play as well as SF2. But kinda looking back at the over all experience I had between the two games, I enjoyed Fatal Fury about as much as SF2. And Fatal Fury didn't try to be SF2. It brought its own gameplay concepts to the table, that carried on into later games in the series. It did its own thing, and it worked.
I didn't discover the brilliance of SNK and Fatal Fury until a few years ago thanks to ACA on Nintendo Switch. I'll never waste my time with Street Fighter again. I really wanted to love the first two Fatal Fury games, but I find them almost unplayable. Real Bout is where it's at!
Fatal Fury 1 like Street Fighter 1, Art of Fighting 1, Clay Fighter 1, Tekken 1, Virtua Fighter 1, Dead or Alive 1, Bloody Roar 1, and Mortal Kombat 1 in general (meaning all versions even the arcade) were all just garbage. These series were not good until part 2 onward. Street Fighter II, Fatal Fury 2, Art of Fighting 2, Clay Fighter 2, Tekken 2, Virtua Fighter 2, Dead or Alive 2, Bloody Roar 2, and Mortal Kombat II were when these fighting games hit their mark and becomes legends. Only a few series that started had a good first entry and those are typically your Killer Instinct, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Soul Edge/Calibur, Primal Rage, DBZ Budokai, Guilty Gear, and BlazBlue though some of these ones are usually criticize for playing too safe meaning almost every entry looks, feels, and plays the same (especially KOF, Guilty Gear, and BlazBlue).
If you've never seen (or, more relevantly, heard) what happens if you run out the whole 30 second clock on the arm wrestling bonus stage without winning or losing, I highly recommend it
So the way you pronounce Pao can mean two different things. I know this because I was saying hard bread once and I pronounced Pao like you did. I said hard penis instead.
Great video as always. I have a soft spot for the first Fatal Fury game even with it's flaws. The SNES port looks great in pictures but the gameplay is awful. A better developer could've made an impressive port. Love the Raiden stage music too.
new retro fighting homebrew for neogeo in 2022! The Eye Of Typhoon [Tsunami / Saiki Edition] -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CsmvSQHjgzk.html enjoy! :)
I'm with you regarding the Megadrive version. Despite it's shortcomings, it's still so playable and fun. It just feels good. Thanks for the great history video!
Ah man…grew up in the 90’s and Fatal Fury series hold a special place in my heart because it felt like real fighting Street Fighter was good too don’t get me wrong, but Fatal Fury animations were better in my opinion…especially when you knock out an opponent and the ring outs
So far this is my favorite fighting game for the Neo Geo. I don't care for the combo-based mechanic fighting games where you gotta memorizes the combos to win; and hate games with infinite combos where you have no chance of recovering. Here it's different, it's about timing 1 attack to hit. This game I'd say is less comparable than Street Fighter 2 and more comparable to Punch-Out (even though Punch-Out isn't a fighting game), where that game is about memorizing the patterns for the enemies to win. 39:30 Kicking the main bad guy out the window of a tall building is probably a reference to "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man" which came out a few months before Fatal Fury did. 41:33 I've managed to do it. 44:46 Inflation happened, as well as supply & demand. 52:07 I have, uploaded it here on RU-vid. 1CC it on Hard. The AI are input readers, you gotta turn their strength into their weakness. They react the same way when you do a move, so you can counter against that. 53:03 I managed to 1CC that on Hard too. Though, the 2nd game seems to be harder. I have yet to manage a 1CC on that one.
Playing since 1984 and managed an arcade for 16 years Till about 4 years ago when it closed. Held on through the pain cuz I knew the day was coming and I wanted to see the job from start to finish. Good work here. Was also into SNK since this game here was really coming into it's own and spotted it in an arcade on a trip to Colorado from my New Jersey home as a kid. I was drawn to it because someone important in my life was named Terry. Turns out that much like Bogard, he wasn't always staying in one place, and worked various jobs. But he wasn't exactly a martial artist, but knew a life past, though completely legal, was one he didn't want to stick with. Granted I didn't know as much about all that other than he was in my life, was much nicer and more understanding to me than my father, and shaped my life a bit early on before he had to leave. Turned out due to something between him and my father. One shaping point of my life led to another. A favorite character in a favored medium of gaming that wasn't by far yet considered the sheik choice but as I was, it was growing and with deeper and deeper thoughts and goals. rather like seeing videos about these past gems, especially when ye ol Bogard comes back up.
Duck King is the classic joke character that you start mocking because he looks quite ridiculous but you become a die hard fan once you realize he is a pretty good character and quite a bully in the Real Bout series and has a sidekick duckling who mimicks him during fights.
ACTUALLY, its easy to think that capcom was inspired from SNK to do their dramatic mode but in actuality that mode is based off of the SFII The Motion Picture fight between Ryu/Ken & Vega((The BOSS))
I always preferred Fatal Fury to SF. Playing on MD when I was young, FF was my first fighting game and the port was simply excellent. Characters were huge, music and visuals were stunning and the game played well. I also loved the design and story. When I eventually played SFII, I was disappointed. I felt that the characters were smaller, and the designs not as good. SFII should have been a much better port on MD, sadly Capcom simply ported the SNES version in low resolution rather than making a proper full resolution conversion for the MegaDrive. So when you compared both games, FF simply looked more impressive on MD.
So in our world he would "go on to be featured as a villain in" AOF2, but actually his appearance was chronologically earlier. I see no problem with my wording.
The SNES could really sometimes fuck up a ported arcade game. The Avengers, Predator vs Aliens, Mortal Kombat I, The Punisher and of course Final Fight.
Technically Billy Kane does not have a cane, he has a Staff specifically a sectional staff. I just can’t recall if the “sectional” was used in the first game, I know it was later on. I chalk up the pronunciation to early SNK issues. I mean listen to what Terry says when he does a Power Wave.
Some versions of Kof characters can get insanely powerful. I think Geese just survived. Doa characters fall of Buildings into a gas tank that explodes on impact and they keep fighting.
AoF and FF are not set in the same KoF universe, so there are differences in the timeline. For example, Yamazaki doesn't have Orochi blood in Fatal Fury, simply because there is no Orochi in this universe, while characters like Ryo and Yuri haven't aged at all and are close in age to Terry and Andy in KoFs, but more than a decade goes by between AoF2 and FF1 (in FF Wyld Ambition we even have an older version of Ryo).
Back in 95 when king of fighters 95 came out I use to play with joe Andy and Terry even though it had the option to Mitch match characters. I alway started off with Andy and already charging up Zan-ei Ken and soon as the match started I smack my opponent with it. I used to link in a combo jump kick then Zan-ei Ken
and lastly.... those ebay prices for the game still are much cheaper then the original price of the game at release which was actually 40 bucks more than buying a SNES or Genesis Console.......
Geese did die but was reborn due to his knowledge of the occult... his appearance in AF2 is because AoF takes place in the late 70's predating the King of Fighters Tournament..
