Linda Martell was the first Black woman to grace the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. She had Billboard success, with 3 songs charting on the Country Music Top 100. But with such a promising start and outlook on her career in Country music, it all seemed to come to a sudden halt. 50 years later, the interest in Ms. Martell has grown to levels in which she never imagined. This trailer is for a documentary, created, directed and filmed by her granddaughter but in her words, words of people closest to her and those who knew Linda Martell outside of her pioneering efforts in Nashville, Tennessee.

I've been a country singer for more than 50 years and was aware of Linda way back. I bought her single of "Bad Case of the Blues" when it came out, and still have it (I've always assumed Curly Chalker did that great steel work), and learned "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" from her recording. Great to see she's getting some props. I've read articles about Black Country singers and they name Tina Turner, The Pointer Sisters (pff), but never a mention of Linda.

Thanks for posting. Recently found out about her and love her yodeling. Would love to see a full length documentary made about her. I think this is what critical race theory is all about and why so many do not want it to be known that so many black Americans have added so much richness to our American culture. You are a wonderful granddaughter and I'm sure your grandmother loves you dearly.

I simply cannot wait for this to be completed. When I was a child, and a teenager, I used to spin the old plantation recordings over and over again, as part of my musical development. I would later have a hit or miss career in the bluegrass field, and Linda Martell was an influence upon me and my singing, even as a white male. Her record was amongst my very favorites. My mother had lovingly developed a deep record collection through the 1960's and I was the beneficiary. I'm so delighted to find this documentary in production and to find one of my earliest influences to still be amongst us and her story finally to be told! Please let me know how I can help spread the word to bring this to fruition, and please send your grandmother my humble thanks for her impact upon my own personal development as a singer and musician! The first time I really heard about her was from country Christmas that Dolly Parton put out. I knew her in just list of names but it wasn’t till then I started to look deeper. Then I found the Jill Johnson.(Jill’s veranda). I love Linda’s music and excited to know more about her. Thank you Linda for opening that door so girls like us can dream.

I’m a fan of your Grandmother. I’d love to do an interview with your Grandmother, Linda Martell for my talk show. Is that possible? We could even do it zoom. I can send you a list of celebrities and singers who’ve been on my show and that I’ve worked with in the music business. I also wouldn’t mind helping you find interviews for your documentary and helping you in any way I can. I don’t want anything from you as I’m sure you get approached for scams I’m just wanting to spread some love and light on her. Her story is important.

Sherri Shepherd honored Ms Martell on her show yesterday, as she’s doing this every episode for Black History Month. Then I jumped down the rabbit hole. Lol I grew up listening to country (not exactly my thing as an adult, but sometimes it brings back some good memories). I would love to watch the documentary about this courageous lady. I hope it gets more recognition - I wish Sherri had known or said something about the documentary. But I do hope you have more than just me looking her up and learning something new - especially what a beautiful voice ❤

First heard Ms. Martell's name mentioned in this whole Beyonce crossover thing. When I looked her up and saw the Hee Haw clip I was blown away by her beauty and wholesomeness. Given her God given talent and range of voice it is a mystery as to how she never Rose to Superstar status. Maybe AI can do a duet between her and Charlie Pride.

I just learned about this. Its such an awful thing to be mistreated for more than 50 years. Such a good and talented person deserves so much better. My aunt sang in the Sweet Inspirations and background for Elvis and she has seen some of this ugliness. Not from Elvis but from those in the country space. I love country and I think it is in a better space now. Country should stay conservative and wholesome for families. Linda Martell is a perfect example of what country music is. Everlasting

I am 60 and am just learning about her. PJ DJ ROCK just did a reaction video on her and he posted a link to a rolling stone article. That article left me frustrated and angry about how she was treated. I found what there is of her music, country and R&B online. Another incredible talent wasted because of racism and sexism. I do have to wonder, though. Given the fact that the music industry is so brutal and very few who go to Nashville ever make, is it possible that she just did not want it bad enough to keep fighting this uphill battle? I am not trying to put it all on her or "blame the victim", but Most of the artist I grew up listening to spent a couple of decades building a fan base with brutal touring schedules. After all, she had such a promising start. I just have to wonder if she gave up too soon. It would be very interesting to hear Linda speak on this point.

Country music has roots in African American jazz and blues of the south. Blues styles have been used and adapted extensively throughout country music's recorded history. Jimmie Rodgers, sometimes called the father of country music, was known for combining the blues, gospel, jazz, cowboy, and folk styles in his songs
