I'm maybe a bit of a freak, but it really is my favourite piece of gear in the whole wide world! My Neumann N20 has changed everything and has ignited my career as a mixing and mastering engineer! Check the studio here: whiteseastudio.com
Dude. That's a fantastic console and studio you are having. By the way - I'd be interested in how you made it to become succesfull at what you do! Any plans on making a video about that?
I agree with the rolls royce bit...This is probably the best sounding console ever produced... so many mixing & mastering engineers try to get their hands on those neumann EQ modules... they sound absolutely phenomenal... I've heard them... especially the ones from the neumann cutting lathes...no plugin eq will ever come close in comparison...U are one lucky boy!
When you raise the fader, it likely sends a switch closure to run probably a broadcast cart machine. That saves the air personally from pressing a channel On button. My guess is that the light will either blink, or change color once it gets a tally signal from the cart machine saying it's stopped, and just played. The cue tone on the cart accomplishes that.
Of course you love it more than your girlfriend. Do you have any idea how many girls there are in the world? And none of them were made by Neumann. Or were they … ? Hmm. That would be amazing!
Year late but that light is great when your fader is up. Sometimes when you are in the flow you don't push the fader all the way down. It also usually (not always) means that there is/was some kind of fader start available. (For people not into broadcasting, this means as soon as you put the fader up, it starts a turntable, tape machine or computer whether those are jingles, ads or music.) (Vintage) broadcasting consoles are so underrated. They are often much cheaper too.
You did an amazing job on that living piece of history. Great job, great looking tool and the price? If you take the 8 month of work into account, it'll be much more alike what such a kind of gear is worth.
Ok in case you still wonder why the light comes on when you hit the fader from 0. That's because it most likely has 'auto start' included. On the bottom on the inside of the fader there is a button, that, you can link to whatever device you want. Pretty normal for radio consoles.
i love you AND your console... !4,ooo euros is amazing... Have you ever Tried Acustia Audio plugins?? how many tracks is it? is it like a standard console. or are the sections used for different things>
hey yo. very cool! I have some faders, I believe from this era (but with no active electronics in the fader units, I believe). Do you have much info on the different fader modules?
Nice Custom Neumann N20 desk. We used to "slaughter" many of the old danner cassette desks in the past 15 years, cause everyone only wanted the modules racked. Since a couple of years things changed and our clients ask as to build custom desks made of those danner modules. Crazy.
Thanks for all your videos! I own and use a Tangent 3216. USA made, been in my various studios since 1992. Can't hear the difference between mine and an early Neve. Focusrite preamps or board preamps? No one can choose which one sounds better. Many have compared them, but no one could choose which is which. I use the Focusrtie preamps on vocals, guitars and bass. Only because I bought them and feel good that I am not wasting my money by just letting them sit there. RU-vid, Joe Logsdon & Company. a
This is the kind of equip I want, and that's also why I'm broke like all the time XD at least no I have a job and can start buying things like this piece by piece ;P
Nowhere near my Neumann N20:-) You are at the very begining of the fitting. But I agree N20 is Rolls Royce at its time it costed 10x more than Trident 80b and 3x SSL 4000 or Neve per channel.
Why don't you mix completely in the box with some DAW or plugin controller (if you like 'hands-on' experience)? Do you think analog EQ's sound significantly better than plugins? Or is it just a workflow thing?
Well, I bought the console because I wanted to go analog, I did a lot of in the box mixing, but when I became an intern at Sound Vision Studio I used a lot of analog EQ's, which made things so much better and easier to mix that I also wanted them. The workflow thing is actually something I discovered later. I'm not a big fan of DAW controllers, they are mostly made of plastic, cannot survive a cup of coffee (the Neumann did survive it...). They need software updates en will become obsolete faster then I can pronounce that word. Apart from that does every DAW controller use layers, which I HATE! I want direct acces to everything.... Oh, and the chances of a big Neumann being stolen is also much smaller ;)
Well, I mean something like Softube's Console-1 (maybe you could review it at some point) seems like a nice 'channel strip' thing although it's still plastic and won't give analog sound (which deals with highs better than any plugin, that's why I got an analog EQ recently) and you would have to use Softube's plugins (so, it's a dedication thing just as with your Neumann). In terms of layering you do do 'layers' of sorts on that Neumann, don't you? And you have limiations on it as well (basically you've got routing, faders and EQs on it). :) Is it mainly the sound that trumps those limitations? I myself would pick those Neumann EQs over any plugin with no hesitation though.
I'd love to hear a A/B mix done on that and digital. I had a similar console for years, and other than the constant maintenance and heat problems, I find the work we do now in Reaper far superior for clarity, warmth and width (using plugins, of course).
We had to routinely service the desk, cost a small fortune every time. Once we replaced all the op amps, that cost us nearly $5k. The twin power supplies made the room unbearably hot during the summer. Though we had 48 channels, it only had 8 busses and no recall. Pain in the ass, never looked back on selling it. The new owner is having the same hassles and is wanting to downsize now too.
@Smeer100 I think your 1000% completely full of shit. In short. Your just another reaper fanboy/troll. And... not a very good one. I use Reaper. And PT and Logic and Ableton... but mostly i work all day (and many nights) on an SSL. better "Warmth and Clarity" than a Neumann N20 console? Your smokin crack fanboy. I would love to hear anything you have done in your magic, "reaper makes music sound far superior than a Neumann console world"... Anything... Period. How bout it? what cha got fanboy? Soundcloud?, RU-vid? anything? Give us a link. Just one... I Didn't think so. reaper is a DAW. its Just a DAW ... a free DAW.(ok $60.. whatever) Its Young and primitive. I tried it, You pretty much get what you pay for. Reaper fans always remind me of trump fans. You all live in a fantasy world.
Yes! Every stage is transformer balanced! That also makes the whole signal path floating, which saves a lot of headaches :). The new console does have a great set of Class-A pre-amps, but I always do my recordings in Sound Vision Studio. They have a great arsenal of mic's and pre-amps, but picking the combination always depends on the goal!
Ha,ha Whilst I’m sure your Console is a Classic, however as its Deutsch how comes you likened your Console to a Rolls Royce demoting Neve to a BMW? surely Rupert Neve must be at least be compared to a Bentley? or an Aston Martin at the very worst? Surely not the “Wurst”🤦🏻♂️ 〽️🕶
