One of the best groups from the 60s. Never a hint of scandal, no egos, just full of sincerity. Their music still holds up today.

Muchas gracias, Donna.

How true. There was something clean about them, and honest and true. Modern popular music simply doesn't measure up, does it. These days it seems to celebrate all that is smutty and evil and nobody can sing properly any more. I can't hear this song without shedding a tear. Judith and her golden, golden voice!
@donna7338
@donna7338 2 года назад
@@ShoshiPlatypus So true. The Seekers had talent. Many of the so-called "talents" today can't sing. They just shimmy and gyrate around the stage lip-synching. Judith Durham and Karen Carpenter had the purest voices. They didn't need a schtick.
@ShoshiPlatypus
@ShoshiPlatypus 2 года назад
@@donna7338 So true again, Donna. Not only can't they sing, but the lyrics celebrate Satan and everything immoral and disgusting. There are no melodies to speak of and the songs are not singable in the way they used to be - all of us could sing along with the Carpenters or the Seekers! They dress in unspeakable clothes and gyrate in a provocative way and there is nothing to commend them in any way. I have a friend who is a professional musician and she is sickened by it all and says that in order to get on in the music business today, you virtually have to sell your soul to the devil!

The Seekers will always remind me of my childhood, and my Dad in particular, he loved the Seekers, and as a child I learned the lyrics of most of their songs and sang along to my favourites on my Dad’s LP’s. Dad passed away in 2010 aged 93, he had a church funeral, I chose the hymns for that. When it came to choosing songs for the cremation service, I chose Nana Mouskouri’s rendition of Schubert’s Ave Maria for the Start of the service as the mourners followed his coffin in. I knew Dad loved that particular version of the Ave Maria prayer, because he once told us he heard a little French girl singing it at Dunkirk after the evacuation. When it came to choosing a song or hymn for the end of the cremation service, as the coffin is drawn through the curtains, I struggled to thing of a suitable piece of music and told the funeral director I’d call him Monday. I’d forgotten all about it momentarily the next day, Saturday, then suddenly out of nowhere I could hear “The Carnival is Over” playing in my head! I couldn’t call my brother fast enough to tell him, he was in the pub with his friends after the football match and I had to shout it over the phone, but he agreed it was the perfect choice for Dad’s final goodbye! I’d forgotten however, that the opening bars to the song are rather upbeat, and as the song began to play, the Priest caught my eye and gave me such a surprised look as if they’d played the wrong tape, then as he recognised the song he nodded and smiled with a look of relief on his face. It was the perfect send off for a wonderful man, and whenever I hear it I think of him and I know he loved my choice of a goodbye song! RIP Harry, I will love you till I die!

In Vietnam my uncle was in 5th SPF (U.S) and served with Aussie SASR LRRP's. He also went on R&R in Australia. He spoke of the kindness and friendliness of the "Aussie's" and how they were like extended family. I was riding in his truck when this song came on the radio, and I briefly heard a quiver in his voice when he told me how the Australian people treated him so much better than people here when he came home to the U.S.

"I'd like The Seekers to be remembered as a group who brought some joy and light into people's lives..." "I hope our music over the years has given people a sense of place and belonging..." "....I just want us to be remembered and the music to be treasured...." Well, I for one am proud and grateful that I grew up - along with so many - with this wonderful music. It's mainly warmly liquid at the mid range, hinting at stability, confidence, and reassurance: think "though the carnival is over". It sounds rich and complete at the base of her singing range, not tense not tight, leaving a feeling of parenthood, yea. Listening to this voice singing is like being cradled.

Judith had a near-fatal brain hemorrhage in 2013, after a Seekers 50th-anniversary concert in Melbourne. Fortunately, someone realized right away that something was wrong, and got help to her in time. Some months after that, the following composed itself in my head, after I met an Australian girl at an open mike night. I sent it to Judith and got a reply from an aide that she was thrilled with it. The tune should be self-suggestive: Hey there, Judith Durham Leading up The Seekers through the years You and all your mates gave us lots of fun And memories too - then suddenly Hey there, Judith Durham You had quite the nasty scare that May But your mates stood by you all the way And you pulled right through You ne’er were scared of changing and rearranging yourself Nor scared of jumping down from the shelf More than a little bit Hey there, Judith Durham You had quite the rocky road ahead But you brought out all the strength you hid And, oh, what a change there's been The world has seen a new Judith Durham

Unfortunately we seem to be living through a time where the negative people seem to have the loudest voices. But that is just that, a moment in time. Fortunately history have taught us that the good always triumph in the end. The Donald Trumps of this world will be consigned to history as losers. But it is up to us to show them that `You get a lot more with honey than with Vinger ' The Seekers will be with us for as long as the good prevail. My only regret is I never got to see and hear the Seekers in real life. But I will have their music to inspire me. And that type of inspiration is timeless. Seamus Tipperary Town Ireland 🇮🇪

@Leon Erin I have no wish to get into an argument with you. This seekers site and the comments expressed by all are a sign that truth /honesty/integrity is still alive. Those who in courage dishonesty /violence/alternative facts and wish the weak to live in the their world. What would you call that? I call that wrong and yes it is a from of evil. Good will always struggle against the ones who shout the loudest with wrong in their hearts. But you know what? Their is more good in the world and in the end will always triumph over the miss guided. I will leave you with this,,,,,, evil only wins when others remain silent. So with that I will leave you and return to the world of hope and listening to the Seekers always brings me hope and a smile and even a tear or two.
@seamusdelaney9133

@Leon Erin Leon you are obviously more political than I am and for me to express comments on such a matter I would quickly find myself out of my depth. I will however acknowledge that a lot of what you express I find myself in agreement with. However two wrongs don't and never will be a justification for those who wish to undermine our fragile democracy. I also find this discussion a little surreal as for me being on a comment page such as this is somewhat out of character for me. My reading of message and I maybe wrong,,, that you are a defender of Donald Trump. I on the other hand would never endorse one that attempts to undermine and destroy democracy by encouraging violence and alternative facts. Leon allow me to end on this, while I don't think you and I will become lifelong buddies, I will acknowledge that your comments were presented in a very respectful manner and at no stage strayed into the twilight zone. So perhaps you and I are not that different and the fact that you obviously enjoy the music of the Seekers is a positive note to end on.

Actually it is a Russian Song. Tom Springfield wrote new lyrics. The Original is from an Opera about Stenka Rasin, who was a Cossak Leader. He literally conquered a Persian Princess and her heart, but had to sacrifice her, as his men grew jealous and rebelled. He throws her into the Volga and wins back his authority with that cruel deed. Very dramatic and sad like the music.

The song ia not composed by Tom Springfield. İt is an English cover of a 280 year old Russian folk song with new lyrics. The Russian song was dedicated to Stenka Razin, a cossack leader who've started a rebellion against Russian Monarchi and its nobelty system in 1656 as all the serfs were treated as slaves of land lords and even sold along with the land they inhabited, in cases of land sales. İn few years he became a hero of the serfs as he defeated several state forces but then he turned out to be bandit chief, pillaging, looting towns that resisted his man. In 1662 he was betrayed by one of his cossack officers who handed hım to Tzar's troops. Then he was taken to Moscow and quartered before the public in a big field where the Red Square is located today .

I just watched the documentary on the abc tonight. I was putting on my shoes to go shopping when the show came on. Needless to say I was late going shopping. Such a talent, even into her 70's doing their tour. Amazing

I remember it took me two and a half years to order the sheet music for this song. I finally got it in 1971. I still have and play it today. This and I'll never find another you along with I Am Australian are all classics. It's surprised me through the years how many DJs never heard this song and fall in love with it immediately and add it to their closing act once they hear it. I played this at my mom's memorial service. I always think of my mom and dad on the Greeley campus where they met. Best song ever

My goodness, but she was tiny! Where did she hide that enormous voice and talent? Thank you, Judith and the Seekers for the many hours spent in joy and sadness listening to your unique performances. ♥4VR

The Seekers' music was a muse for me while in Vietnam amid the raucousness of war and rock-and-roll it was timeless and pure something impossible to grasp in war...

My husband sang this song to me. Not all of it but some lines. We were so young. I’m 78 now and he has passed on 30 years ago. But I still remember. The carnival left me 30 years ago.
