In today's content, I go back and look at the history of the original Sony Playstation and how it won the console war defeating veterans in the field Nintendo and Sega. How did this 32bit system manage to outsell the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast and 3DO. Let us go back and look at the clever marketing that was applied to this system and some of the awesome games that could be played on it. The Sony Playstation changed gaming history forever!

My family was poor so my mother bought me a PS1 at about three years after it came out. That console is still irreplaceable in my heart and I still collect and mod a few to this day. This was a very well done video.

I get that. By time we got a Nintendo NES console the Super Nintendo and Genesis were already out so my NES collection is small but I still have those favorites to this day. PS1 was the first console I bought with my own money working in high school so I get the special meaning like you in a different way.

Probably my favourite console. I bought it on launch day, having won £150 on the lotto in the summer to get me halfway to affording it. Launch day was also enrolment day for me at uni. I couldn’t find where I was supposed to go to enrol and I was too nervous to ask anyone, so I panicked and walked out without enrolling, bought my console, went home and played Wipeout and Ridge Racer. Suitably fortified, I went back and enrolled later that day. Spent my student loans on many games!

I was a Sonic fan and had a Mega Drive but you're right that a lack of Sonic title stopped me from asking my parents for a Saturn. My brother and I ended up getting a PS1 for Christmas 1998 and I have such fond memories of Gran Turismo, FFVII and IX, Crash Bandicoot, Toca, Colin McRae, and Tekken. Did you know the development name for Crash was 'Sonic's ass game' because they wanted it to be like a Sonic game where you were behind him?

I went with the Nintendo 64 this generation. I was 8 and it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I don’t regret it at all, the memories of playing Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash, WWF Wrestlemania 2000, WWF No Mercy, Goldeneye, and Mario Party 2 with my friends and family will live on with me forever. My cousin who lived a few streets away had a PlayStation so I would get the best of both worlds whenever I went to his house.

I love this channel! The 5th generation is my all time favorite. It was the start of me buying my own consoles as I got both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation on September 9, 1995 the day the PSX launched. Yes, I traded in a lot of games to make this happen but man did I love them both. I am now a huge 5th generation collector. Addendum- Wipeout's soundtrack was absolutely amazing but there is one game that could give it a run for its money...Ridge Racer! That soundtrack was my 1995. My friends and I were into (still do) racing and that is pure driving music. Although today we run our cars on a quarter mile track now instead of the streets like stupid teenagers (we were stupid teenagers).

I went with the Sega Saturn in this generation, due to Sega's Arcade conversions, also the amazing 2D Fighting games, and the many NeoGeo conversions. That said, I played plenty of Playstation over at my friends houses, there were plenty of system exclusives it was worth spending time with.

This is exactly why the Saturn was designed. It was made in Japan, a country where the arcade scene was HUGE at the time. SEGA board's was confident that allowing players to enjoy their favorite arcade game (mostly 2D) at home would be a major selling point. They only added 3D capability after, when the Playstation was starting to make noise, which explains why the 3D programming is so hard on Saturn (they also choose quads for rendering, while the rest of the world sticked to triangles).

The PS1 was my first experience in 3d gaming. I will always remember as a child coming home from school one day to find my big brother playing Twisted Metal 2 on his new PS1 console and I had never seen anything like it. I ended up getting a N64 for Christmas a year or two later so I was lucky enough to have the best of both worlds. My favorite PS1 games were TM2, Final Fantasy VII (my brother did all the voices because I was too young to keep up with him reading all the text), Tomb Raider 2, Gex and Metal Gear Solid.

That net yaroze game was Psychon. It was a maze with doors that needed keys. And if you had no keys one would appear in your inventory after several seconds. This slowed you down so collecting keys and opening doors strategically was important. It was an interesting game because the bodies didn't vanish and left a trail of "bread crumbs" for you. I loved the Net Yaroze games. I loved the bad english translations too.

In my country it was hard to get any 16bit era console. In fact we didn't even get the SNES here, just the Sega deep in its life already. So most grew up on 8bit famicom clones. The playstation was launched and we didn't have money, luckily I won a TV phone in comp and actually won a store voucher that I used to purchase a playstation. I loved that thing. Didn't have money for games but managed to pick up gran turismo and fifa world cup 98 with voucher, didn't even know what gran turismo was at the time. Became one of my favorite titles of all time.

It was my first console generation and I bought a Saturn in '96 and an N64 in '99. I never owned a Playstation but in retrospect definitely consider it the overall best of the 3 due to it's library. My reason for going with Sega and Nintendo was brand loyalty - even though it was my first generation, I had seen the Mega Drive and the SNES while growing up and the brands were etched in my mind. I didn't see Sony in that same fond light - not a proper 'gaming' brand! so I suppose I had no attraction to the brand. Ironic as since then I've grown to think the PlayStation line of consoles are incredible and consistent.

Great video. At the time I had a SNES and Mega Drive, and I sold them, and their games, to Electronics Boutique (remember them?) to be able to buy a PlayStation. I was waiting for the ULTRA 64, but it took far too long to be released, and so I went with the PSX. I never played MSG, but loved Tekken 2, it's such a brilliant game. I enjoyed many other games such as Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, International Track and Field, Disruptor, WWF Warzone, D, and many which I'd eventually play on PC too, X-COM TFTD, Command and Conquer, DOOM, Space Hulk. It was probably the height of gaming, although I did prefer the 16 bit era for other reasons, the PSX era was such a massive leap forward and the first time I saw arcade quality games in my home. Even though each PlayStation has stormed it ever since, I've gradually lost interest. We won't see the likes of the 90s ever again. These days I don't have nearly the enthusiasm as I once did. Most of that is down to the mostly boring and samey games released these days,

Love the documentary! At the time the Playstation came out. I was a straight up a SEGA fan. I had the Saturn and totally loved Virtual Fighter and Daytona USA was a thrill and a half...and then my cousin had a Playstation with the game Demolition Derby and that sent my thoughts about the PS to a new level. A level that I thought SEGA would have had but apparently the programming of good 3D games on the Saturn was too few and far between. SEGA seemed to always jump the launch though that gave the others time to change and tweak their design, giving the sequel of the PS more of a success with better hardware than the (company's console I went with again) Dreamcast. Oh how dial up was super nice at the time when it was included on the system. 😆 Dreamcast, was a better approach as it seemed with the nifty Windows CE logo on the bottom right, literally making it a first foot in the door for Microsoft in the console wars. Keep up the great work!

I’ve been gaming for about 35 years or so. In 1995, I was anticipating the Sega Saturn. I loved Virtua fighter in the arcade and couldn’t wait to play it at home. I remember playing Sega Saturn Virtua FIghter and Panzer Dragoon at kiosks in Toys R Us summer of 1995. However, I couldn't shake what Sony was bringing when I would read video game magazines and how awesome their launch line up was (Battle Arena Toshinden, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Twisted Metal, etc). Tekken blew me away when I played it in the arcade. The launch fighting games on PlayStation had better graphics than Virtua Fighter and the Playstation was $100 cheaper. I got the PS1 October 1995 for my birthday and never looked back. Prior to that, I had the sega master system, game gear, genesis, 32x and sega cd. During the 32bit/64bit console war, i never got the Saturn or N64.

Someone didn't do their research on this: The reason the PS5 is flying off shelves is because scalpers are using bots to buy them up en mass, so they can resell them at a frankly criminal mark up. Literally these bots clear stock within seconds of it becoming available. The exact same thing is happening with the XBOX Series X/S, gaming graphics cards, and top end CPUs. Scalping needs to become a felony globally. Also with how hard Microsoft hit during E3, it looks like the XBOX Series X/S is poised to beat the PS5.
@BangBang-hk4rg
@BangBang-hk4rg 3 года назад
Scalping sucks for sure. I have just gotten used to staying one generation behind. My PS4 will hold me over for the next few years or until we start hearing rumblings of a PS6 release. At that point, the PS5 will be old hat and easy to get at non-scalper prices. I’ll get one then. If everybody would stop paying the inflated scalper prices there would be no market for scalping. So many people are in the “have to have it on release day” mindset though.
@markmorabito1643
@markmorabito1643 3 года назад
@@BangBang-hk4rg I used to have this same mindset; wait a generation or two before buying a console to get it cheaper. The problem with more recent consoles, is that if you wait too long, they discontinue the online servers and you could miss out of a lot of games and features. This happened to me. The latest consoles I had until recently were the GameCube, PS2, and original XBox. I still haven't gotten a Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4, or Xbox One. By now, I am quite sure Nintendo has discontinued the Wii's online services, making several games unplayable, or at list becoming very limited. I'm not sure about the others, but they will probably be dead soon too. Also, it seems that there has been a recent surge of interest in retro gaming, raising the prices of older consoles. I bought a Switch last year (thankfully from a store and not a scalper haha) and I'm glad I didn't wait until it becomes obsolete because I would have missed out on many eShop only games.

@@markmorabito1643 I guess I’m old school because I don’t do any of the online stuff. I grew up with the original NES and I’m kind of stuck in the days of physical copies of games. I did have an N64 and a Dreamcast eventually too, which were also chock full of some of my favourite gaming moments. I feel that it was just a great decade for gaming in general, proppelled by Sony.

ESPN Extreme Games (street luge was super op) Twisted Metal 2 and Gran Turismo were basically my childhood. Had the N64 but never got the Dreamcast. Then went to Xbox.

I was playing PC at a Lan cafe and my friend invited me to try out the playstation. Back then I was already playing doom and dune 2. The first game I played was Dragon Ball Ultimate Battle 22 the japanese version and US navy japanese version as well. It did not impress me. but couple of months later my friend's neighbor bought a ps1 as well. They have Twisted Metal, Nightmare Creatures, Critical Depth and Tekken 1 that got me hooked and I bought a ps1 as well and the rest is history.

Gets the like from me! Keep up the good work LD and stay safe. Probably my favourite console of all time (console, not computer) and it was mind blowing at the time. Retrospectively a LOT of the games haven’t aged well but they were definitely the foundation of making video games cool.

Minor correction at 14:19 ~ Final Fantasy VII was only three (3) discs, Final Fantasy VIII was four (4) discs. Also, you have a TON of Final Fantasy VII music in your background... It's making me want to fire up my old PS1 and play FFVII again! I haven't played it in about 11 or 12 years...

I bought the original Playstation as a gaming upgrade to my Amiga 1200. Some great games featured including some of my favourites - Silent Hill, Wipeout 2097, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 2 and Parappa The Rapper (Simple fun and addictive and I still remember the songs). Did I also see cool boarders and THPS II? I havent even turned on my PS3 for a few years as my daughter's switch keeps her quiet. To be fair, I think the switch gives the PS3 a good run.

The PS1 is probably my all time favorite personal console. I have a lot of great childhood memories with the SNES more but PS1 gaming library overall smashes most consoles out of the water. It had something for everyone. It was like the best of Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo in one console. Even though I did get a PS2 it never touched the same level to me at least as PS1 library. That PS1, N64 and Dreamcast era was special.

Lmao, I remember buying one of those huge capacity 3rd party memory cards. I felt so high and mighty that I didn't nees multiple Sony 1st party cards, little did I know how wrong I was. I lost so many precious saves off the shitty workmanship of thw high capacity cards! Needless to say I chucked it, and bought a bunch of official Sony memory cards that still work till this day! 😂😂

5:10 Why are those soldiers using the loo while holding their weapons? Seems very difficult. Anyway, the first console I bought for myself was the NES (mainly to play Mario & Sports titles). From their I next chose Sega Genesis over SNES because it put greater emphasis on Sports games. When both PlayStation & Saturn released - I spent many sleepless nights comparing specs, libraries and reviews to determine which one I'd go with. Despite Sony having no track record in game systems, a voice in my head was telling me they were the better choice...so I went with them. I'm so glad I did.

I had both PS1 and N64 (as well as Nes,Snes,Game boy, Megadrive,Master system, also Commodore C16 and Atari 2600.. yes i was lucky) I got to say i found myself playing N64 a lot more than i did PS1..I had a load of games for both N64/PS1 (and the other consoles) but N64 appealed a lot more to me out of the PS/N64 battle. It wasn't until 98 when i was given a Sega Saturn, and around 2004 i bought a Dreamcast for £14 from a carboot sale

Brilliant video! I think that Net Yaroze game was called Psychon. As for the question at the end, my family got a Playstation in that console war. The main reason was that my brother entered a competition to win one. He didn't win the main prize, but did get the runner-up prize of a copy of Actua Soccer 2 and a free years subscription to the Official Playstation Magazine. As this gave us a Playstation game and a stack of demo discs, it would have been a bit silly to have gone for an N64 or Saturn instead.

One thing the PS and sega consoles couldn’t compete with that Nintendo had to offer was the N64’s ability to allow you to gather around 4 mates and absolutely belt it out smashing each other. Mario Kart 64, 007, smash bro’s. Those joyful experiences were really only on the n64. To this day this is still what separates Nintendo

Actually the "Nintendo Playstation" (Super Famicom CD) was a 16-Bit CD Rom console. Nintendo decided to pull out of the deal with Sony and work with Phillips/Magnavox. Hiroshi Yamauchi was very disappointed in the loading times so the Super Famicom CD was cancelled. Phillips/Magnavox received permission from Nintendo to build the console anyway but have it under the Phillips/Magnavox brand. Phillips/Magnavox came to Sony to help manufacture what was the Nintendo Playstation which became the Phillips CD-i.

My Mom bought me the N64 First in 97 when i was 13 because of Mario World, Golden Eye And Duke Nukem. Then around 16 i got the playstation myself. Tekken Was my all time favorite and final fantasy VII as well as Dead or Alive, Final Frontier and Rival Schools. I played Virtual Fighter at a friends a few years before. Later i got Duke nukem 3D. I have my Japanese 1994 playstation hoodie, sometimes i wear it to work or out and about. I remember collecting all the Gaming mags and Drawing all the anime characters from Street fighter Vs Capcom or Just watching Saturday Anime here in the US and seeing the Anime based on the video games and vice versa. I was into Techno and House and i loved hearing the Acid jazz Instrumentals and Drum n bass background music, so i started producing my own beats. a Friend of mine had a playstation game where you could produce your own beats, we played on that for hours until we started doing it on PC. I love your channel so much. its fun to watch and You're an Angel.

Growing up in the UK I knew a few people with a N64, but nobody with a Saturn. I had a PS1 since it was the most affordable console of that generation (in terms of both the console and games) and had an amazing library. I stuck with Sony for the PS2 era before moving onto PC, and never looked back.

my family was strictly nintendo but we loved the sega arcade machines so were excited when our local video shop was hiring out the saturn so we booked a week in advance but when we went to pick it up the last person to hire it kept it for another night without notifying the shop this happened again the next night as well, so we hired the PlayStation instead and never looked back, we won a n64 in a Christmas raffle one year and traded it in to get a ps2 lol
