I went to school on Treasure Island in the late 1960’s. It was so beautiful. I remember the big fountain of the world, and the palm trees lining the shore. Our school at that time was in an old barracks right next to the water. Our quarters were on Yerba Buena the island that Treasure Island is attached to.

Kenny, We were one of the first families to move into the brand new enlisted base housing there in 1965. 1116F 13th street. I was 11 my dad was a Chief Petty Officer instructor at the Damage Control School and Firefighter School. I went to 6th grade at the old converted barracks. For 7th grade the bussed us to Francisco Jr High in Chinatown. Funny when the new school opened they bussed the Chinese students to TI.! I used to play little league baseball on fields they built the new school on. I loved it there at TI. I delivered the Oakland Tribune newspaper and met every moving van to get folks signed up for the paper. $2.25 a month! Bought me a purple Sting-Ray bike at the Exchange. 10 cents for a movie at the theatre, 60 cents to bowl next door. What a life! I got a million stories I could share. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Hey CaptTom! T.I. was a wonderful place. I went to elementary school in the 80s and they were still bussing the kids from Chinatown to T.I. Elementary then! I still remember the chinese girls playing chinese jump rope and laughing at me when they permitted me to try, but refraining to teach me! 🤣 Thanks so much for sharing you memories here. So many of us are sharing them as they slowly redesign the island for civilians now. I plan to return sometime. Hope you'll subscribe and get notified of that video. Take care!

I love how you highlight places that are unique. I grew up in SF and got excited whenever we passed through T.I. crossing the bridge. That’s wild that your teacher was Mrs. White. I loved playing high jump and Chinese jump rope. Most folks outside of the Bay have no idea what it is.

I lived on Treasure Island in '87-'89. 1243C Northpont Dr. I was in 2nd and 3rd grade there at the elementary. We moved in the summer before the earthquake. I played t-ball for two years, went to the youth center, saw The Land Before Time at the movie theater there, and skated to pop music at the skating rink.

I was a student at Electronics Technician "A" School on TI in 1966, then a student at Electronics Technician "B" School in 1968. Upon graduation I became an instructor at Electronics Technician "B" School. In 1969, we were the first family to move into a new 3-BR housing unit at 1224-F Bayside Drive. My kids attended elementary school on the Island, kids living in the older section of Navy Housing on the Island unfortunately were bussed to schools into the city of San Francisco. After graduating from the ADCOP Program in 1975 I was transferred to a submarine on the east coast. CWO4 USN Ret.

In about 1966 i lived on treasure island. I remember so clearly the place we live was 1102 H 13th street. It was a three bedroom or four bedroom two storey apartment and we lived on the end unit. Adjacent to that was a large area with some bunkers and my friends and I would explore that area and one day inside one of those bunkers I found a armband with a swastika on it. It was the genuine article. I had so much fun playing with my friends there I think I was in second grade. I also remember that was when we got our first color television.

I was stationed there for a year 1971 to 1972. It was a great place to be while being trained in advanced electronics warfare. You're right about the Navy Exchange, I used it quite a bit. Across the street tot eh west there used to be a big air search RADAR dish for the electronics technicians school. One weekend day, a technician was goofing around and bypassed the dummy load and keyed it on. There was full power to the RADAR dish and that thing caused every flash bulb on the shelves in the Navy Exchange to pop! When did teh two six-spoke barracks on the west side get torn down?
@novelworldtravels
@novelworldtravels Год назад
That must have been a surprise in the exchange. What a story! Im not sure when those were torn down. I know theres a lot more to follow soon with the high rise buildings planned. Yes I was a Navy wife there in 92/93/94 we had 3 kids and they loved it, My Daughter use to love to go to Pirates Cov and have lunch, there was some little beach that my kids went there that I did not know about at the time, My friend and I use to walk around that trail along the rocks. and the 4th of July was great we would hang out our window and whats them go off over the golden gate bridge. Our Address was 1125 Gateview Ave # C LOL yea my son came home with a crab too but I caught him :) so he put it in a bucket outside ( I would not let him bring it in), somehow that thing got in the house anyway and scared me to death

Lots of history here that you entail. I still have some studying to do on the island. Talking with a few purveyors on the island when we were there, they have little confidence that the island will expand with their grand plans. Lots of bickering and investors suing each other right now. I think I have a link I can share with you if interested. Thanks. Best to you! 🥤🦀
