I cast both zinc and lead bullets, anyone curious about casting zinc bullets I will give you the best piece of advice I learned the hard way. DO NOT EVER CAST ZINC IN CHEAP ALUMINUM MOLDS! ZINC EATS ALUMINUM! instead use a cast iron mold or a brass hardened one from arsenal molds. Zinc is actually castable at 900+°F not a whole lot harder than casting lead and certainly much easier than trying to cast or swage copper.

You can use aluminum molds but have to smoke the cavities heavy so they are carbon lined to not eat out the molds.

@@HAYAOLEONE I got the Elvis Ammo .224 mold from Jared at arsenal molds and picked up the 4 cavity brass hardened mold and that damn thing is heavy compared to the aluminum Lee molds lol it's too notch though, I cast zinc and lead bullets out of it. The zinc bullets drop at about 45 grain projectiles and they're awesome just be careful loading them and watch for compressed loads because it's still the size of the 77grain bullets

Zinc has been used in the past. Sixties i think. Its not as hard as solid copper. Its still hard so barrel wear plus

What’s not mentioned in this video is cost. Cost plays a big role in selection of a bullet. Even though the 1900 projectile is old it still does a wonderful job putting a animal down. Plus they are extremely accurate and they are cheap. In recent years a few of my cast friends have been casting zink projectiles. The issue with solid cast zink projectiles is they are ALOT lighter then normal jacked projectiles. So that can be a issue in regards to the correct powder charge and powder case fill. Not to mention there’s zero data to make these kinds of zink cartridges.
@hartstudebakerkid

Copper and zinc are so close in weight you can use copper load data.
@pitchforkpeasant6219
@pitchforkpeasant6219 7 месяцев назад
Been moulding pure zinc for two years plus. 63% weight on average. I use jacketed bullet data and no lube or gas checks. 220 grain mould about 138 actual using 220 load data. 87 grains imr 4831 in a 338 lapua on 20 lb propane cans nice expansion. Not as hard as solid copper but barrel wear is worse than jacketed lead. Zinc is bearing material though so “slick”

@@pitchforkpeasant6219zinc is definitely known to wear out a barrel very fast. It saves $ on bullets for sure but I’d only use em in cheap barrels like bear creek arms.

@@jefferyboring4410 You obvoiously have no clue and have never taken a chemistry class to even see a Periodic Table. Zinc is right next to copper which has been used for solid bullets for a while. Zinc has also been used commercially. On dangerous game you want penetration to the point that you get pass throughs so the animal is bleeding through a through hole.

Did lead bullets really strip the rifling at high speeds? Or did the rifling grip so hard it destroys the bullet?
@dthundergunb3115
@dthundergunb3115 2 года назад
I would say it depends on how hard the lead alloy was, if it were pure leaf the rifling most likely shredded the bullet on the way down the barrel, my marlin 336 30-30 will fragment the instant it touches anything, I use the lead alloy I cast my 45 acp bullets, but they're only going half as fast in the 45 I've literally only recovered fragments of cast lead from my 30-30 loads but can retrieve almost a full copper jacketed FTX. The jacket makes all the difference in holding it together haha my AR loves zinc bullets I don't even have to powder coat them.

What's the benefit of the hard zinc penetrator core as opposed to using a copper core behind the powdered zinc? Copper is both harder and denser than zinc. Is there some other benefit to zinc? Cost perhaps?

You'd be limiting your own market selling steel core bullets - some countries automatically consider it armor piercing. Many ranges would not allow it as they wouldn't want to deal with the liability of sparks starting fires or just the steel chewing through their barriers/backstops.
