She also never wanted it to become such a thing. She did it because she suffered several miscarriages and just wanted to celebrate that they got to that stage in the pregnancy (which her prior pregnancies hadn't made it to). It was never about the gender, it was about getting past that gestational milestone.

4:58 this one made me genuinely mad. The kid obviously didn’t wanna pop the balloon but the mum, instead of doing it herself, just..pushed her to do it? And then got mad when SHE let go of the balloon. What made me mad is that I have the strong feeling that the mum blamed the little girl and maybe even screamed at her afterwards..

I think the kid might have been scared of the sound the balloon would make when popped, gathered enough courage to try it once but lost her nerve when it didn’t work. So the mom took the pin to do it herself but the kid got upset so she gave the pin back. Kid at this point is just done and throws the pin on the ground like “if I can’t do it, nobody can” So mom starts to scold the kid for being difficult but lets go of the balloon in the process so now the whole thing’s fallen apart. If that’s the case then I can understand the mom being frustrated and stressed out. Then again, that’s just my take on it. Hopefully she was just mad at the situation and didn’t take it out on the kid later. Edit: autocorrect typo

came here to say this, a baby shower is great but no need for "gender" reveals cause they make no sense & can be harmful
@Unknown-ov2kz
@Unknown-ov2kz 2 года назад
I'm not overly fond of them myself, but the idea started from a couple trying to conceive, and after many miscarriages very early on in the pregnancy, they ended up with a baby that actually survived. Although, they wanted to mark a massive milestone, because the fetus hadn't survived long enough in previous pregnancies for one to be able to tell the sex. Hence what we now have as "gender" reveal parties. That milestone was what they celebrated, not the idea of what is between one's legs. It actually wasn't anything like what we have now, but of course things escalate.

The first one: "It's an Addams!" Gender reveals just feel really creepy. Telling a bunch of very interested adults about their childs' genitals feels illegal. Putting all those expectations on a fetus for how they'll dress, act and the hobbies they like just seems very entitled from the parent and dehumanizing for the infant.
@LookingForFrogs
@LookingForFrogs 2 года назад
yet the probability that the fetus will enjoy being reffered the way their genitals suggest is over 90%, so is it really so bad? I guess maybe since I'm cis I don't get it, but I remember as a little child loving being girly and reading books or watching shows about other girls, it was a part of my identity and I wouldn't like to have it taken away from me.
@Lisa_Flowers
@Lisa_Flowers 2 года назад
@@LookingForFrogs the thing is, cis people aren't the only people who might feel uncomfortable with this. There are many gender nonconfomring cis people who weren't allowed to do things that didn't fit into the expectations of what they were 'supposed' to like as girls or boys. Butch lesbians being forced to wear dresses, feminine men being made to play sports. Heck, there are fully feminine women who just had a couple of hobbies that were coded as masculine that also dealt with this and felt restricted in their childhood. Gender roles and cissexism negatively affect _everyone_ . People should be allowed to like what they like, without being shamed because they don't fit into expectations that were forced onto them before they were even born. And this doesn't alienate people like you who are girly girls, it just means that _everyone_ gets to be who they are instead of just gender conforming people like you being comfortable and catered to because they are the presumed norm. Also society already leans super heavily towards affirming kids who are gender conforming (feminine girls and masculine boys) so no, avoiding parties that aggressively gender infants and hyperfixate on their genitals will not rob you of your feminine childhood. The point is to get rid of expectations and allow kids to be whoever they naturally are, that obviously includes people like you, because you are the norm, and because it includes literally everyone. It doesn't mean getting rid of girly things or feminine women, it means representing feminine and masculine people of every gender, and those who have no desire to be either. It means representing _everyone_ Also the idea that 'well most people are cis so who cares how much it hurts trans kids' is a pretty shitty take especially on a trans man's channel that is heavily viewed by trans people. Last time I checked, 'the majority of people are fine with this so who cares if it hurts minorities' is the antithesis of activism. The point is to include EVERYONE and doing that doesn't threaten people who already get to exist comfortably. Acting like it is the job of trans people to navigate cissexist norms that harm them, when those norms don't have to exist (and when it would be to the benefit of _everyone_ for them to not exist ), is a bad take. It hurts _us_ so of course it matters, of course it's bad.

I kept the sex if my baby a secret to avoid all the things that come along with friends and family buying or saying stereotypical gendered things. I wanted my kid to be loved for being a baby and not for being a specific sex. People made such a big deal about it and would say “I’ll wait to find out what it is so then I can buy them stuff” and I’d just respond with “get anything you think is cute because it shouldn’t matter. Just avoid super gendered things like ‘daddy’s girl’ or ‘mister cute’.” I’d also refer to the baby as “they” and people would first assume twins (fair) but then I would explain it’s single gender neutral and people would give me this face 🤨.

I love this idea of parenting! I watched a video about it, parents who raised their child with they/them/ pronouns and the gender neutral name "Zoomer" they got all ("all" meaning both traditionally feminine and traditionally masculine) the clothes and all the toys for Zoomer and they played with and wore all of them. I'm pretty sure they gravitated more towards boy friends in school and eventually (second grade?) told his parents he liked he/him pronouns better. honestly in love with how this turned out and while I don't like kids and don't plan on having any I think this is what I would do.

I don't see how you need to know the sex of the baby to buy baby stuff. If pink and blue feel too rigidly attached to a gender for you to risk, there's plenty of other adorable outfits in sorts of colors. There's all the baby paraphernalia that's needed for any baby, all sorts of baby toys, just bunches of stuff someone could get without needing to know the sex of the baby.

My parents kept my sex a secret until I was born because they wanted to be surprised. It didn’t have anything to do with keeping it gender neutral, they just wanted to be surprised. But I think I grew with a fair share of “masculine” and “feminine” things. My parents never said I couldn’t do things because of my gender and they pushed me to try lots of stuff regardless. When I was a little kid I had barbies and dolls but I also had toy cars and action figures.

As a non-binary person I feel like gender reveals are ridiculous but I also acknowledge the fact that raising your child as a specific gender that they may not identify as is what can be emotionally damaging to trans children not a party that existed before they were born. I think it's obvious how little meaning these have to us as humans based off of childrens reactions of "whatever this kid is, it will be, just give me the damn chocolate." It feels like an added ritualistic practice to validate traditions that still don't hold true in a more progressive world (that has always existed but is safer to exist in the public eye now).

Having a gender reveal meant a lot to me as I was basically celebrating being pregnant long enough to actually be able to find out the gender, I've suffered with 8 back to back misscarages so making it to 16 weeks pregnant was absolutely *HUGE* for me and my husband. We had a Halloween themed gender reveal and picked purple💜 for a baby "Ghoul" and green💚 for a baby "boo". We had a special balloon made and matching stick made so it fit our colour theme, all went well until my big sisters shitty boyfriend shouted "IT'S A BOY" as a prank.... My sister was vial during the whole thing as she's mad I'm having a kid as that means the attention will be on my child not on her as she lost her kids (she was abusive-I only *just* found out as she hid it). Everyone went from happy and cheering (for a split second) to confused and completely done with the whole thing. He absolutely destroyed the joy. Then my mil and dil were upset that we are having a girl not a "perfect little boy".... My dil was huffing and puffing then said to me in a very annoyed tone "haven't your family got enough girls". A month later my baby got diagnosed with a condition called bilateral talipes so I was offered a abortion, I refused as my baby is a blessing I don't care if she was wonky feet (btw its treatable so she won't live in pain or be restricted in any way once treatment is finished). My mil and dil were very upset that baby has a disability and not happy we don't want to "try again". Basically my mil and dil are complete twats and will be cut off, I'm done and so is my husband. My sister has also been cut off because no way am I letting a abusive person near my child, my sister also tried to stop my wedding and when that failed she got engaged straight away (probably for attention as that what she claimed I was doing). Apparently life is a game to her and everything is a competition and I don't want to play so she can play alone. It's safe to say if I'm ever lucky enough to be pregnant again me and my husband will go out for a nice meal and have a themed desert to find out baby's gender. Fuck trying to please everyone else, we will save the money and enjoy it ourselves in private.

I am just a "regular" CIS female. I found the whole idea of being put in a drawer because I am a girl annoying even since I was a 4 or 5. I was always drawn to toys and activities that are supposedly "only for boys". Yet I was forced to "pick a doll" for Xmas every year - until I rebelled and asked for a remote controlled Porsche with popable lights :). My grandma once tried to "bribe" me so that I would not insist on the book "Leatherstocking" for my birthday but instead get a "book for girls". She offered to buy me 3 other books if I would just not insist on Fenimore Cooper...guess what, I went with "Leatherstocking". But I never forgot the endless humiliation of having to fight all my relatives including my parents (who constantly apologized for my "weird" interests) who tried to make me a "proper girl". So, I guess you can imagine what my opinion of a gender reveal is...Everytime I see a little baby girl with pierced ears (child abuse IMO) and pink clothing and toys I just want to throw up. It is brain washing from moment 0 on. Why not let a kid develop according to their interests? Why is that so hard? Oh, and my fav color always was blue - even though in my birth country the color assignments of pink and blue to a certain sex was not a thing back then. Now it is , too. Yuck!

@@beev448 it is when you’re a literal baby. When the baby is older, they can decide what their gender is, but it is a literal automatic thing that is there as soon as conception happens. Gender reveals are excellent and perfect, we're just holding them for the wrong people. Babies don't know their gender and it's pretty weird to hold a party to announce your baby's expected genitals. Trans people, on the other hand, need to update a load of people on the pronouns they'd like to use, likely the name as well, and they could do with a lot of support and reassurance from the people who love them that they are welcome and encouraged to be themselves. Imagine your closest friends cheering and celebrating you as you come out ❤️ Not for everyone, but would be lovely for some.

That said, I love the following joke told me by my best female friend, a trans woman: A young couple had just had their first child, and a friend of the family called the new mother to congratulate her. After showering her with good wishes, the caller finally asked what was on their mind: "So -- is it a boy or a girl?" Replied the wise young mother with a smile, "We don't know -- our baby hasn't told us yet." Tell me if that isn't a wholesome and sensible way to think about the gender of one's offspring.

@@alexshemwell8320 if you watch some of the videos titled "raising our child as non-binary" it's actually pretty harmful, a child doesn't need to think so early about all this gender stuff. What about just raising a child free from gender stereotypes, no matter if it's a boy or a girl... you don't need to put non-binary label to not push stereotypes on your child.

My opinion on gender reveal parties: If you're going to do one, please, for the love of safety, just use a cake. Get some plain vanilla cake mix (unless you want to do it from scratch), get some food coloring, bake the cake, and frost it white or something so you can only see the color once you cut into it. If you like chocolate cake? Go red or blue velvet cake. Want some other cake, like carrot or lemon? Color the center layer of icing only, leaving the outter layer the usual color. Simple, cheap, and taste good.

I have only been to a gender reveal once (my mom brought me) and I don't even remember what the child was. The gender reveal was one of those cakes that you cut into and the color of the cake was the apparent gender. I was just there for cake at that point. Tbh, if you want a gender reveal, go off, but make sure that it isn't dangerous. The entire state of California doesn't need to know that it's a boy.

I'm personally not bothered by the whole gender reveal thing, as long as the people who are doing it at least clean up after themselves if they're in a public area or park, or better yet keep at at their own home or garden or whatever they have. That said, I think the mom at around 4:58, with the kid that didn't want to pop the balloon, smacked the kid, and I hate her with all my heart.

I don't mind gender reveal parties as long as it's not about, if I where pregnant. My family is terrifying around pregnant women. They tell them how to live your life, how to raise a boy, how to raise a girl, are upset if you don't agree, will harass you constantly about the gender and shit. I told my partner that if we EVER get a kid, we're pulling a nine month vanishing act so I don't have to stress out about other people being too nosy.

@@alexshemwell8320 I think it's a good idea to at least give kids a starting point so that as they get older they have some kind of comparison to compare how they feel. @@alexshemwell8320 but you gotta understand (I’m trans) the sex they are born with is their sec biologically so technically that is their sex. I’m raising my child as that sex until and IF they decide to change their gender. I’ll make sure they know it’s always and option, but assigned gender at birth is what they’ll be, what I’ll do my sex reveal on ( I like that terminology better than gender reveal) but theylll always know if they wanna change that they can. Parents can celebrate this if they want to.

I'm all about the "live and let live" attitude, and I extend that mindset to gender reveal parties. As long as it's not one of those insane ones that cause wildfires, I really don't care. You can represent the gender of the baby in traditional colors at the party, however when the kid is born I hope you'll be open to allowing your son to wear pink if he wants to. Also quick thing to add. If you have a gender reveal before the kid is born, you better have a second gender reveal party if your kid comes out as trans. It's only fair.

If the person later in life doesn't identify with their assigned gender at birth, then I hope their parents/caretakers accept them & love them just as much, but it's sad that a lot of enbies & trans folks don't have the support & love of their family/parents 😥 At least there's chosen family, but I understand that it must still hurt like hell to not be accepted by the people who raised you. Trans rights are human rights 🏳️‍⚧️ Enbies are valid 💛🤍💜 Love is love 🏳️‍🌈 As for gender reveals, most of them are actually kind of cringy or harmful, as I've seen other ppl comment here 😅

I personally will not discover my child(ren)’s gender until AFTER my partners and I name them. Then we will raise them, using They/Them pronouns until they tell us how they identify. We will also NEVER use gendered stereotypes. They can choose their toys, they can choose their clothes, and they can talk about what they want to talk about, but we will never let them get bullied for what they like. But, anyways, gender reveals should be obsolete at this point, in my opinion. Edit: This is how I currently feel, but I’m a long ways away from kids, so my opinion may change. Thanks to everyone for not being rude about disagreement.

I get why people do this, but I think it's kind of harmful due to the fact that most kids' genders match up with their sex, at least as far as we can tell, and calling someone they/them consistently is a form of misgendering. But then again, I guess by the time they're old enough to feel misgendered by that, they'd be able to tell you? I dunno.. I don't know a lot about this I guess

Oh! I can actually answer the question of when it'll pop, since I did some volunteer work with actual high altitude balloons. A party balloon will pop pretty fast, since as it rises, the pressure pushing in from the outside air will lessen, causing them to expand. For a weather balloon, they're large enough and start off at a low enough pressure that they can reach over 30 km, but for a party balloon, it would happen pretty fast. Probably high enough to still be out of sight, but I doubt it would make it more than a mile or two up.
