Because I just watched an interview he did on Dead Meat Presents a few days ago and I'm almost certain he said it was a reimagining of the first one and neither prequel or sequel. And also, the trivia section on IMDb says "The title suggests that it might be a prequel to the 2008 original, but it isn't. "The Strangers: Chapter 1" is actually the start of a new trilogy, with two subsequent chapters on the way. It is a new trilogy, only inspired by Bertino's original."

The Strangers chapter 1 doesn't work as a prequel as it's very much rooted in the modern day however this instead invites the question of whether it could be a remake or a reboot of the original film. The other characters you thought would have large role in film was confirmed by the director that they will have large roles in chapter 2 and 3 he confirmed this on Dead Meat channel interview

Seen it last night and everyone bounced exactly like you said. Those of us who stayed for the post credit scene said "WTF!" as it reminded everyone of Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th part 2! We should've kept it moving like the majority of folks in the first place 😂

I think having both of you in this situation to review this movie is a great interpretation of people who have reviewed this movie after it came out. One has seen the other movies and was looking forward to see this one just to get disappointed. While the other hasn’t seen the other movies and after watching this one is left with the “ehhh it was an okay film”.

They’ve actually filmed 3 new chapters for this over a 52 day period, this being the first… Director Renny Harlin, who did Elm St 4, Die hard 2 and Cliffhanger also said he wants to a do a super cut of all 3 films making one 3-4 hr movie. 🤔

Went and saw this movie last night, and thought it was pretty damn solid. My second favorite, as the first is untouchable, and the second is… the second. The main characters aren’t uninteresting (not sure how we got there), and they might have been real dumb at times, but they were also really smart at others. The Strangers act like the fucking Strangers, which is more to say than the third act version of them in Prey At Night. If you like the franchise, give it a chance.

It’s a modern trilogy that was all filmed one after the other if I’m not mistaken. I’m giving them a chance. It’s tough not to compare to the OG, but it’s a necessity to get the most out of what they’re presenting. I didn’t mind Chapter 1, it definitely had some creepy well crafted moments. I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt being it’s a trilogy that the filmmaker has a vision for. A beginning, a middle, and an end. It’ll be tough to mess up as long as they stick to their vision with what they set up in Chapter 1. The only way they can completely blow it is if in the third and final film, they introduce a whole new character that never made an appearance in the previous two films, hardly giving the strangers any screen time at all. I’m looking at you Halloween Ends 🗑️
