I’ve mentioned it before but I HIGHLY recommend you look into the “disturbing novels iceberg” it is full of tons of books I know you’ve enjoyed/ picked up and I myself have used it all year to vicariously shop for myself through that list and have rarely been let down by it’s recommendations. If you were interested in making a video about it, it is long enough that it could easily fuel a whole series of videos of you reviewing and going over it. That last part is obviously just a thought but I think you would still enjoy looking into it for yourself and for inspiration for your wishlist 😁. Hope this helps 👍

Hope there’s more extreme horror vlogs coming soon, they’re some of my favorite videos you’ve made (specifically the ones where you try to read multiple in a week and give us a wrap up at the end)

If you haven’t heard of him before, J.G. Ballard is a guy who wrote a whole bunch of famous surrealist transgressive fiction works. He is most famously known for “Crash” which was adapted into a movie by David cronenburg you may have heard of, about people who are sexually attracted to car crashes and form a club recreating famous crashes in a sick gory sexual fantasy fueled nightmare
@Anotherroom

Yeah, that sounds like something Cronenberg would adapt.

Omg! So I was watching this movie one time a long time ago, when the other Crash movie was popular. I think it was on HBO or something. Anyways, I remember being so so confused. 😂😂😂

To cement your understanding of those new words, you should try to work the phrase "pernicious agronomy" appropriately into a conversation somewhere lol.

I really like horror, but I love weird books with horror elements even more. Two weird books that I would recommend are Oh Pain by Kyle Winkler (a weird short story collection that's kind of simple storytelling but really makes you think) and Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford (a short, visually descriptive novel with light fantastical body horror elements). I bought Antisocieties by Michael Cisco about a year ago. If you read it, I'd love to hear what you think. I hope you're having a good New Year. :)

I DNF'd it. Not that it was bad, just a bit too dry for me at the time I was reading it. Maybe I'll revisit it sometime. A similar (but IMO better) book is Panenka by Ronan Hession.

Excited to hear your thoughts on Ligotti (definitely read his short fiction!) Cisco, and Ballard. A great book on writing craft is Vandermeer's Wonderbook - It is a thoroughly unique take on the craft process (as you might imagine) unlike any other writing books out there. And since I I'm here If you have not read Jerzy Kosiński's The Painted Bird, it is a short novel of surreal experimental literature that has all the horror in it you could want. It's fantastic.

Atrocity Exhibition is such an interesting work, I absolutely love it! Thomas Ligotti's works are fantastic too, just take a bit of breaks to really let it sink in, or be like me and eat it whole and spend the next week thinking about it. I will have to see if I can find some Finnish horror and weird fiction translated to English so I can send them to you! There's an active science fiction scene in Finland, we even hosted a Worldcon in 2017, but there's also a lot of great horror, especially supernatural.

Great Haul!! Eclectic in all the best ways. I mentioned this in a past comment, but I believe Stephen King's On Writing is the best book covering the art of writing; told autobiographical. Can't wait to hear about the Vonnegut tome!

Happy 2024, Anda! Glad to see you opening to other literatures, including some of my favorites. I read Maldoror 15-20 years ago, and re-read it last month. I didn't understand anything. But I loved it! I tried reading The Gospel Singer many years ago, the premise sounds super interesting, but the writing was terribly boring. It's not Flamnery O'Connor on steroids, it's her on downers. I've read all of Thomas Ligotti's short stories, but his "phylosophy" book (the one you got) has eluded me. His fiction is just perfect. J. G. Ballard is my favorite science fiction writer ever, and has been since the late 90s when I first discovered him. The Atrocity Exhibition is his most experimental book, closer to William Burroughs that to the rest of his own work. If you like it, go on, keep reading more Ballard, if you don't like it, go on, keep reading more Ballard. I'd suggest Vermillion Sands, The Drowned World and Cocaine Nights. Great stuff. If you like Torture Garden, you might be interested in exploring Decadentism. There are many authors, the French are the best ones.

2:34 😆Keep adding weird french philosophy books from time to time, just for the lolz. It should be a thing. Oh yeah, Happy new year! p.s. Italo Calvino is a great writer. I loved pretty much everything I've read from him. It's not horror. His "Cosmicomics" is close to sci-fi though. There's a part of a sentence in it, that sounds horrific, if taken out of context: "...in the midst of the darkness, we dreamed of more darkness, because nothing else came into our minds" (would be even rougher in first person, IMO).

First saw Stoner on another booktube channel (Red Fury books) and it didn't sound like my usual cup of tea but felt in a modern classic mood. Something about Stoner really touched me, and that's not easy to do. No horror, but plenty of regret and what ifs. Butchers Crossing is also amazing, but one brutally hellacious western, extremely brutal and intense. Curious whether you'll enjoy it not.

I have the same problem with having books on my list that I have no idea how I arrived there. Stoner by John Williams is on my list too. I seem to remember arriving there because Stephen King mentioned it at some point. Maybe. Also, Harry Crews is an amazing writer, I'd also recommend his novel A Feast of Snakes. If On a Winter's Night a Traveler is also on my list, but I haven't the slightest idea how I got to it.
