Looking at how this figure's backpack is designed, those oversized barrels aren't entirely needless, at least probably not to the original designers; I think that since this was during an era where Optimus Prime tended to fly around with a jetpack, particularly in the DotM film where his trailer became said pack, they gave him those big barrels so that kids could pretend he could fly! (plus an imaginitive kid could easily turn those big things around to pretend they're huge cannons). Pretty much every 10 year old who knew about DotM probably loved this toy since its only problems would be an inaccurate design, which really, not a lot of them care too much about accuracy. I'd say this figure was great for its time and purpose. Edit: As is usual, generalizing anything reveals exceptions quickly. Some are suckers for screen accuracy. But it’s good to see that those oversized gas canisters are 100% cannons + jetpacks
I never had this mold, but I can say that everything you said is true, as a kid I didn't really care about "Oh this character is so faithful to the screen" I just wanted to have him and play with it, so yeah those tanks would 100% work as jet barrels or cannons in whatever playthrough a kid decided to put it through.
As someone who had this toy as a kid, I actually really didn't care for its design at all - not only due to inaccuracies, but just because it's proportions are _so_ ugly to me. I will admit, however, that the few times I remember playing with it, those barrels were a jetpack. I think it's neat seeing That Toy Guy getting to enjoy a figure I hardly could and pointing out all the positives.
This was the figure that started everything for me. I thought it was broken because the hip joints got so loose over time, then I realized on my third copy, that it was just the screws being loose. Love this figure to this day, and I saw the huge gas tanks as his jet pack.
This figure will always have a special place in my heart since it was my first Transformers figure that wasn't a gimmick toy or a legion class figure! I remember using the big tanks in the back as if they were Primes jetpack.
I love this mold and how it's just its own little thing. Though, I will say the DOTM Deluxe Optimus is just as strange to me. Looks a tad more accurate but has a disastrous backpack (despite being really clean everywhere else). I had the Lunar Fire repaint which used the DOTM Voyager's mechtech and it was,,,, so big for that guy. However, Deluxe Optimus and Starscream worked better with Voyager Megatron, Shockwave, and Sentinel to me so they stayed on my display for many years.
This review hit me really hard, because I'm suffering from a chronic sickness and felt like the pandemic took away a huge part of my early 20s, and I just suddenly remembered when I was 13 and I got this as my first voyager Prime in my childhood home. I was so happy and content back then, and those memories mean a whole lot more now. I feel like I took those years for granted and seeing this toy again (which I still have) took me back to a simpler time. Thanks for this.
this toy feels so significant to me cus its one of the first toys me and my cousins all got because it was decently cheap for what it was. loved the feel but the gas tanks are really easy to break lol
The "Fireburst" version of this figure was actually my first ever Optimus Prime, and I still love that figure like crazy, and I hold that version as my preferred "evil Optimus", as the orange lightning going through him looks like a corruption taking him over, instead of the "Nemesis" way of just being Prime that shops at Hot Topic.
Absolutely LOVE this guy. He feels like a near perfect cross between a Gundam and Optimus. And the articulation and transformation is DAMN good for the time. The legs are fucking amazing too.
Be careful with the gray plastic. It gets brittle with age. On prime where it's thick and chunky it should last, but the 5mm pegs on the gun will splinter and crack if you try to put anything in.
Between the oversized barrels kinda becoming a jet pack, and the solar panels on the truck mode, this Optimus always felt to me like he was kitted out to go to space, something I desperately wanted to see happen cause all the dotm toys had the moon as the backdrop to their packaging, it was so cool
That intro made hyped more than the whole BB and ROTB movies. This makes me realize I love Transformers movies so much because they are just cool and get my heart pumping, the angles, the shots, the writing of the phrases feels so philosophical but so real, the voice acting, the music, IT IS ALL A SYMPHONY OF PERFECTION ❤️❤️😩 (The new movies are fine :) But I have always been a Bayverse lover and I will be forever.)
this figure was the start of my transformers movie toy collection that until today hasn't been growing much since i don't always buy figures. my DOTM voyager prime was the takara tomy one with trailer and mech tech gun/blade. although after frequent use, like what you said from 6:08 the left shoulder section of mine broke off, but i wasn't being aggresive at using it. maybe my copy has degraded plastic or something different, but i love this figure so much and it's nostalgic. this figure started my tf movie toy collection. ❤
What a coincidence - I was re-watching Dr. Lockdown's review on the Reveal The Shield version of this mould, and just a few hours later this video releases. Yeah, this deco looks a lot nicer than the RTS one, and I also like the look of the solar panels. This definitely feels like one of those toys that may look a bit naff nowadays, but I definitely would've enjoyed as a kid.
Seeing this review filled me with so much nostalgia since this was my first ever optimus prime toy ever owned and it was my favorite toy out of all my other toys at the time, great video BTW hope you keep making more.
I used to own the Fireburst recolor of this mold (black and orange colors go so hard on Prime), but lost him a long time ago. Kept the axe to it, and I recently picked up the standard version off Buyee for roughly 20 bucks, so now he has two weapons. I would like to get the Fireburst version again someday. Always liked him and the Cyberfire recolor of Bumblebee. Jank mold aside, he's a very fun figure, imo.
I like that arm transformation, and the general sculpt of the figure. If the legacy series were porting all designs over to the style of Transformers Animated, I would want the people doing Legacy 2007 Movie OP Animatified to study and crib engineering from this figure. Additionally, you can see from the panel work and the mech-tech that the HasTak engineers _could_ be doing ridiculous third-party levels of panelforming and do it well. I very much get the feeling of the engineering saying, in a snarky tone, "Yeah, we could do all the stuff 3P houses do. It wouldn't even be hard. But we're making toys here, y'know - for _kids_ with _budgets_." I am totally here for that. Thanks for showing off this mold!
The Fire Burst Optimus Prime figure was my second Optimus Prime figure I owned. I got it mostly for the axe because at the time it was the only axe for Optimus in DOTM. I don’t know if I have it now, I probably got rid of it because the Takara version of that mold eventually replaced it before Studio Series became a thing.
I have the Fireburst version of this mold and he's been my main Optimus for years ever since I got him as a child. While I do want a more modern Optimus to replace him as my definitive Prime, I'll always love this guy and he looks great next to my Gamer Edition Megatron. I also always thought the Fireburst colors made him look more like Nemesis Prime so when I was young I sometimes used him as Nemesis
I have fond memories of this guy… because of the amount of shit people gave him back in the day. Everyone was hyped coming off of the 2010 Battle Blades Optimus and was wondering how DOTM was going to top it… then the photos leaked. God, that time period was funny. I didn’t buy him back in the day but I love him now.
The title got me dying. TTG watching your videos are such a treat, your constant sarcasm, the music intros, and the tf movie editing, just everything in general. But I must ask, have you thought of starting a series similar to the bionicle series you did how many years ago?
I'd say the gas tanks work in conjunction with his gun being a thruster, making his truck mode into a frickin space semi. My main issue is with the sides of the front being blue, which is not only inaccurate with Optimus' actual vehicle mode, but also inconsistent with the red pieces just above them. Also... they're molded in red, so what was the point of painting those parts blue? And the grill area is entirely unpainted... save for the very top edge. _Why?_ Almost forgot to mention that the Takara trailer version actually retains that bit of weirdness, which sticks out even more due to this one being meant to be more vehicle mode accurate. Again, _why?_
This is such a strange optomus prime figure but I love it because its my first movie toy . I really need to get a new one since my old one got lost while moving 😢.
I used to have this figure when I was small. DOTM was the first movie I saw in the cinemas in my life as far as I can recall, to this day it is my favorite movie from the Bayverse, and I loved this Optimus so much. It was one of the first Transformers toys I had as a child. Unfortunately I actually broke his leg one day and then it just disappeared, not sure if I lost it or if I gave it away, but I still miss him to this day
After looking at this figure in a pose, it looks alot like an old anime character, plus it looks badass just due to the weird proportions with the long ass legs and tiny torso doesnt that remind you of old og anime like Dbz, Sailor moon, Pokemon, etc. Prime carries that so well even though its a movie figure like it supposed to not look like an anime character and yet this figure does but its epic
Those super model length legs with the tiny torso look like the katoki gundam designs that were popular from the mid 2000's, like the MG Unicorn Gundam
this was my first ever transformer toy and my first ever optimus figure but then,my little cousin broke it back in like 2017 and yea its now gone sadly
It (the mold) was actually used quite a lot, I have the Reveal the Shield version of this mode where half of the guy is in Transparent red plastic, with the red sword & shield.
I have the Fireburst one and I love it, that one is definitely not going for accuracy between the colors and the spacey feel to teh vehicle, so it can shine for its own merits and it has a killer axe. I also wanna get the Takara one with the clean altmode.
while the arm kibble is a bit much i love the proportions of the figure, It looks like you gave the movie Optimus design to a modern super robot Anime designer
i had this optimus as a kid. out of the three others, he was definitely the one i played with the most. i even made a stop motion transformation video lmao
It's kinda cool seeing how this toy started the evolution of movie styled voyager Primes, like they took this figures engineering and used it for the first edition TFP Optimus, and then that was modelled for SS-05, and later refined for SS-32
The leg transformation on this was SOOOO satisfying back in the day just due to how streamlined they were in both modes. I wish they had found a way to update this engineering with better proportions and articulation for a modern Prime
I still have this thing. It was my favorite toy for a long time. However, child me somehow lost the right hand, one of the smoke stacks is bent and loss, and the hip joints just don't exist.
I got this guy for Christmas back in the day in a two pack with a g1 deco shockwave. Prime’s gun has been gifted to ultimate prime and it works well. That shockwave is still really good as well
I have this toy and it's honestly really fun. The design is really weird but I remember as a kid i used to pretend that it was a sort of upgraded form (nowadays I see it as a bayverse version of Galaxy Upgrade Optimus lol), Kind of a shame the hips are looser now on mine.
Such a good looking guy. I guess I don’t really have a good relationship with it probably because my grandma got me a KO version, but it’s still a good toy
Honestly thought this mould was a KO or a third party figure, since I had gotten a Nemesis Prime for Christmas, well, my figure might be a KO, but still. I share a lot of the same opinions aside from the gas canisters being a bother, as they don't really bother me that much. He is a bit weird in the comparison department of the legs and torso, and giving him an, as you said, odd bodybuilder look, but I think this is also a really damn fun figure to own, so fun to flip back and forth from both modes, and fun to pose. Might get the Optimus Prime deco sometime in the future.
Still have him. Still as durable as ever, a wacky Prime but pretty cool. Took an awesome pic of him and DOTM Megs on some Lava rocks near a volcano I believe on the way back from Texas back in 2011.
This is the first Optimus I ever had and I got him from a thrift store, he was missing all his accessories, toes and half of his trailer hitch so little me used the rest of it as a foot gun and when he broke I was so sad, never realized how weird he was until getting into modern transformers
The Takara version is GORGEOUS, and reminds you what a OP trailer should look like. Unfortunately, the trailer isn’t compatible with Siege/Earthrise/etc.
i used to have this figure. its nice to see the transformation and the robot mode proportions with modern engineering glasses. its so funky, its weird, but its just unique imo i miss this mold, my very first Optimus Prime figure
