I remember my cousin saying 'they're your favourite band now but won't be in 5 years time. that was in 1978 and guess what they still are and always will be now

they were something totally out of this world, every member of The Stranglers, mastered his instrument.
The best piece of bass playing I`ve ever seen from Burnel, or period. Chasing notes all over the frets and nailing every one of them. Nothing more to say except thank god I was drawn to The Stranglers some 40 years ago. I`ve got great musical taste, and am one lucky bastard!! x
I remember using some of my paper round money to buy this record. It seemed like I was buying a new Stranglers record every week. Fantastic base line as it was for so many of their records. RIP Dave.
johnbrown 60 He used to be until the Stranglers went soft commencing with the La Folie album in 82! Go Buddy Go was from an earlier and better period for this truly great band!
Me too. I was at this gig. Now I'm filming Fat White Family and Black Midi for my sins. Hard to beat these guys at their peak though, and their peak was way longer than most.
@@LouSmith I've spotted the back of my head in the crowd. Battersea Park, 1978, Hugh Cornwell wearing a 'fuck the GLC' t-shirt. That's the Greater London Council who were behaving like twats about an obscenity charge against Hugh. Best extended version of Go Buddy Go ever...
Stephen Tymruk 🙌 pretty sure they picked up another one for their nice n sleazy performance. What a memorable gig eh? Speaking of nice n sleazy. In case you missed it .... lbry.tv/@LouSmithReposts:6/nice'n'sleazy:7
@@LouSmith Thanks Lou. I'll never forget that there was a fully authentic working tank onstagec at Battersea, firing what must've been a few blank salvos during "Tank". A very good friend of mine Mic West died of a heart attack just over 2 years ago on 1st April, very prematurely on his 50th birthday. The last time I saw him 6 months previously, he handed me a DVD of very shaky but perfectly watchable & audible video Super 8 footage of the entire Battersea gig. It must've been filmed by a roadie/sound crew member or sympathetic journalist, as there are some marvellous sepia tinted shots of Dave & JJ waiting in the wings to go onstage, being asked to wait a few more minutes by the stage manager while more punters flood into Battersea Park. And yes - of course as well as the rockin' renditions of "Go Buddy Go" and "Tank", the lovely girls stripping to "Nice 'n' Sleazy" was another major highlight. Haven't seen anything as sexy as that since then at a live gig, although Killing Joke came close a few years ago when they had a couple of gorgeous leather clad female fire-eaters onstage at The Brixton Academy and at The Roundhouse in Camden....
Absolute class performance again. Three cheers for Jet, sweating and hammering away in the background and keeping it all together. And the incomparable one-handed magician, Dave, who couldn't resist throwing in a bit of No More Heroes there just to freshen things up! That original line-up, back at that time, with their musical talent and attitude, were the best of the bunch by far.
Sounds like the version on Live(XCERT). Brilliant. Good to see JJ and Hugh cooperating. The good old days. Dave Greenfield is the best keyboard player in rock. Period.
carl couch Valve amp (think it was a Hiwatt) and speaker cabs that had at least one torn/damaged speaker in it. Plus a heavy string attack on Rotosound RS66 strings. JJ used say that the main part of his sound was that old Precision Bass he had but a lot of one's sound is in one's hands. He termed that sound 'The Barracuda Bass Sound'.
Andrzej Grucza I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find that Americans are fans of a band like The Stranglers. Same goes for The Jam. Both bands seem so British that I never think of them translating across the pond. Good though...... a good band is a good band.
'Nother Yank here. Saw 'em on British TV late night in summer '78. Been collecting their albums ever since. Many of my American friends got thrown by the accents, but shit happens. They're awesome. The best.
Loved Hugh's style and a quiff to equal any Teddy Bears of that era and prior. Big Paul Ferguson and Geordie Walker of Killing Joke were soon to follow.
Going to see Alice Cooper supported by (his zimmer frame) and the Stranglers in October. Can't wait to see two of my favourite bass players in action; JJ Burnel and Alice's Chuck Garrick.
As they say in the unmusical trade... They 'smashed it?' But in the real world, 'They f**king nailed AND rocked it!' How can you make that bassline and drums sound so Redding and Mitchell and Hendrix but with a prog punk punk prog way! Amazing!
