Another reason why Jiren chose to shut himself from others and solely rely on himself is that he did try to get help and rally his fellow disciples to avenge their master but no one tried to help him. They were afraid and left Jiren alone when he needed them most. This adds another layer to his cold attitude as its not just because he's afraid of losing people but also that he's been let down by having faith in others and doesn't want to be let down again.
Unlike Goku, who is cheerful and relying on his friends. Some were even enemies at one point. Strength was found through connection, not through separation.
You're not capable of mercy without strength. Not really. You are capable of blowing off challenge to avoid it or seeking parley and pardon through kindness but you cannot truly be merciful or peaceful. This is correct.
I get chills when Jiren shows up. His presence alone sents a chill down each fighter within the ring. That cold stare of watching the fighters fight amongst themselves with gimmicks, power ups. Jiren is just a force of nature, inmoveable object in one fighter.
@divinedeviant Yeah.. unfortunately. But I'm glad that a sum is appreciating Jiren. He is a direct opposite of Goku, who gains strength through trust and friendship.
Jiren is a fascinating character, an interesting incorporation in the franchise for several reasons. First, he is not an antagonist or villain, he is an individual with his own set of morality, convictions and perspectives that only put him to face Goku as one of the most steps for the protagonist to overcome his limits. Another is that it was designed to be a counterpart of the protagonist on his way of strength: Jiren became powerful, to the point of being at the level of a hakoishin, but training on his own, strengthening without establishing contact or connection with others on his way ; the opposite of Goku who reached where he is for his teammates and rivals who led him to be where he is today.
@@kirbyeatsyourfamily7345 well depends how one saw him. To me he isn't an antagonist given he is a superhero-type with no evil intent in his character, you could say an opponent given he was put in that situation. But again, one can have differents points of view about Jiren
@@victorcippitelli2242a superhero is still an antagonist if the point of view is from the villain. The fact that he is actively opposing the views of the protagonist is what makes him the antagonist.
Holy crap a vid that not only uses the English dub but doesn't rag on Jiren. So sick of people hating or calling him boring. You got it right he is just what he is a flawed being trying to be and island. One who is so focused on power he does rival the gods. He isn't my fav from Super that would be Hit. But he is high up there for antagonists in the series for me. Higher then Buu, higher then Freeza and way higher then male Kale. Really now I just want 17 and Jiren to interact more. A nice slice of life ep where 17 tells Jiren of his past and shows him his family and the animals he protects. I also want a movie that is just the universe 6 elites but those feel beyond the Super Dragonballs.
One of the things I like about Goku vs Jiren as its not just a fight for survival but its a fight about ideals. The scene that is a prime example of this is when UI Goku knocks Jiren into a part of the arena and Jiren shouts that he refuses to believe in Goku's talk about trust because to believe in that is to deny the identity he has formed as a person thus far which he refuses to do.
People like to call Jiren a bad character but I dont think so Jiren is like Goku if the Dragon Balls couldnt bring people back to life and Master Roshi,Krillin and everybody else stayed dead after the King Piccolo arc
to take this even further, imagine if tien, yamcha, etc and all his friends abandoned goku after realizing they can’t win and don’t have dragon balls anymore. just imagine what that would turn goku into. That’s exactly what Jiren became. Which makes their fight that even more legendary aside from the animation and choreography. causals think he’s a bad character but miss all these details
Been working on this one all year, hope you guys enjoy it. Do you agree with my analysis of Jiren and his view of Strength? Heads up this video uses moments from the Anime AND Manga continuities to paint a more complete picture of Jiren as a character, I know some people dont like that but try to enjoy ;p P.S. I stream every Wednesday at Noon EST! Stop by if you want to discuss the video or some terrible ScreenRant DBZ Articles :) P.SSSSSS. Join my Discord it is popping off and I love everyone there: discord.gg/qYcYtwq9hy
One thing I like to point out to my friends who are less keen on Jiren, is the fact that he's basically just Goku but from a far less optimistic universe. He didn't have allies or family alongside him, they were lost. He didn't have magic wish granting balls to fix his problems, the namekians and their magic isn't known to universe 11 as far as we know. Essentially he's just Goku without the resources and plot-armor of the protags of dragon ball, he had to do it entirely on his own. He's not a villain, but he is definitely misguided in his ways, after all, he was willing to ultimately break his own moral code to prove to Goku that friends, family, and connection could just be taken. Ironically, in that moment at least, he was a villain. Something I think he realized himself after the ToP. I hope we get to see more of the grey guy, but we'll have to see.
He's an amazing character in my eyes, one of my favorites. Vegeta waited til he was erased to give him genuine compliments. Got a lot of respect for Jiren.
@@kenshinhimura9387he wants a normal life, and while I do find his lack of literally any training annoying, it's probably something to do with the writers always regressing characters for no reason (Goku is a retard and re learning things he should already know about, Vegeta for some reason wants to be better than him even tho he said that Goku was the best in the Buu saga, basically ending his intentional pursuit to surpass him, and then Gohan pulling a low IQ retard move and not finishing off Buu instantly even tho he should have learned from that after cell)
I'm really glad I found your channel. Your character analysis are great and they really make me think and help me have a deeper appreciation for said characters. Jiren has definitely grown on me overtime
cool vid. i LOVE jiren so much because he is the first “good guy” antagonist & his ability to outclass goku like he did was surreal. he was s really well written character. i so CAN’T WAIT for jiren & broly to be in the same arc together!
Awesome Video, ever since the release of Jiren I have loved his character. His personality and his principles. A lot of people didn't like him. I am glad there are others that like this character and can see that he isn't like other dragon ball bosses, he is not an evil person killing innocent people or trying to exterminate a race.
He’s one of my favorite characters his past is so tragic. I hope he comes back when Dragon Ball super comes back or if they’re going to make the new series.
FARRR more potential than vegeta or goku. No god ki and he’s already Complete ultra instinct level. Imagine complete ultra instinct Jiren? Or hakaishin jiren?
i just want to see Jiren and Hit actually fight no holds barred. not necessarily each other, but someone that they are genuinely trying to kill with all their might. and no, that Hit vs Goku contract fight doesnt count. had Hit wanted to, he could have ended Goku permanently. also, im convinced that this demon in Jiren's past is actually a canon version of Hirudegarn waiting to be introduced in a later arc.
I just rewatched the tournament of power arc from start to finish. And I, along with many others at the time were way to harsh on jiren. Sure he may have seemed boring at the beginning, but towards the end after he knocks out vegeta, we start to see the flaws show. Rewatching this made me realize just how polar opposites Goku and jiren are. Goku even admits as much when he’s helping android 17 and freiza “wow he got this strong all on his own… he’s really something else”
"To achieve great power, help yourself. But, to achieve a great feat, help others." -Someone... I don't remember but I probably said it wrong so it's my quote now.
I think Jiren may be on the spectrum. Doesn't talk much. Really strong (there used to be another term for it, but I only just got off a 24hr hate speech ban. Don't wanna catch another one just yet) Hyper-fixation on one particular subject (Justice, instead of maybe trains or Pokémon)
But what about when Jiren fired that ki blast at the universe 7 bleachers? He said he wanted to show goku how easily they could be taken away. Sure goku cancelled the attack but jiren was willing to directly kill the spectators.
Jiren is him and you can’t fuck with him unless you wanna know what clouds taste like in the afterlife. Because that’s where you’ll be going in less than a quectosecond. Also who’s the best bald badass kratos, Jiren , thanos or saitama?
Great vid I agree with pretty much everything you said. Question, do you look into any of the source material behind DB like Journey to the West, Buddhism, Taoism, Martial Arts, etc? You're really knowledgeable about the series based on the videos I have watched.
I really liked Jiren- the concept of him, anyway. Thy mystery, the possibility of what he could represent in the series at large... but then things just fell apart. Jiren: Ends the biggest tournament threats with a single punch or blast, without effort or even showing visible effort. Also Jiren: Gets punched one time and goes into a depressed stupor. It's like there were two writers: one who wanted to make him hyper-focused and the strongest character in the series, and another writer who wanted to make him dumb and weak.
"Jiren is a man devoted to justice. He doesn't act in self-interest" My guy please go watch the ToP arc again and in org jap because the complete opposite is the truth. Jiren is a guy who completely devoted everything to strength. He acts completely on his own self-interest. His philosophy up until the end of the tournament is "Strength is Justice, Strength is Absolute." He wanted the SDBs for his own wish and he used his own comrades as disposable units. That's not me saying that, that's Jiren and Vegeta's dialogue.
Contradiction is such a good writing technique for a character, Jiren denies the tournament and he is describes as self-less. BUT once he hears he can get a wish he joins. if only they had that scene in the anime as well as actually explaining his wish in the anime.¨ His parallel with 17 is so good as well, the anime really butchered this lol.
i disagree. anime and manga jiren are different takes on his character. the anime version actually did the scene better imo because it perfectly explains his obsession with strength and why his wish matters
I've been wanting a deep dive into jiren because that seems to be an echelon of power that seems to be skipped over, what _about_ the mightiest mortals, what _about_ rivaling the gods rather than progressing along *their* tiers of power? powerful power's sake has its value if used _properly._
What if vegeta lost a large amount of ki/power when he first turned ssjb against goku black because he lost confidence while failing to intimidate goku black?
Would you please consider doing a video on Yujiro Hanma from Baki, he is way overlooked and misunderstood as a character, often only viewed as an overpowered villain.
So basically jirens whole personality is just if I close you off and use physical force and worry about nothing but myself I will win do I agree, that’s subjective do I respect that I don’t know but what i do know is that Jiren is built different and seeing him battle Super Broly would be a badass fight
If enough of us FANS spread the word we can make this happen. How dope would a side arc movie of Jirens origins be?! I'd buy it. They gotta give bring Jiren back hard, I feel like hes toriyamas new favorite character. Bring him back and let him be the dude who saves every1, and in the end he gives Goku his credit that he couldve nevrr gotten that far without having met Goku. Take my money
So many views on your videos but not a lot of subs? I know that it sucks, but you might have to remind ppl to hit the like and sub. Wasn't saying it to be an ass, underrated
I should email Japan another character Videl Maximum Universe 12's Vadel. She grew up betrayed by others they only cared about themselves, getting people fired. An evil tyrant killed her people, she kept training through hard work for 30 years under hard core training, she eventually grew way stronger than the grand priest while in some strange dimension. Everytime Videl powers up they becomes a glowing silhouette of different colors, that's the humans version of sayan transformations. Videl currently using the Freedom Star 1,999 transformation, which is absurdly way stronger than super Saiyan God blue and super Saiyan 4 to 5. Lord Beerus' throws a tournament against universe 12, Videl is the big massive rival that never ends. Freedom Star transformation let's women go toe to toe with dudes and win. At the start Videl knows Freedom Star transformation 1 to 1,999. Videl so crazy over strong that Lord Beerus' and Grand Priest don't hold back getting involved going at this Videl of universe 12
Anyone who says jiren has no personality doesn’t understand…. We can’t even comprehend a person who surpassed the gods… he’s legitimately different… he doesn’t need a personality he is a force of nature
I think you made a good point about Jiren as a character. He's still not gonna be my favorite, and my opinion hasnt really changed on him, but you at least pointed out his character does exist and has a philosophy behind it
