In this session, Dr. Judy discusses the underlying problems associated with pets who are itching and scratching. Weather, heat and humidity along with allergies tend to cause dogs to itch and scratch a lot. She cautions that for some breeds such as the Cavalier or Brussels, the itching and scratching could be due to a neurological problem such as SM or CM which should be tested for as a possibility. Many of our pets are being treated with various medications and antibiotics that keep getting repeated with little or no results. Dr. Judy points out that the bacterial infections that appear are secondary. The skin usually has a barrier of microflora that keep our pets healthy and keep the bad bacterial in check. The infections that develop are due to the barrier being broken. Therefore, when we treat the itching we need to understand that we are treating the symptom and not the underlying cause which is usually an allergic reaction to something. Thus, it's vital to find out what our pets are allergic to which causes the outbreak of bad bacteria or yeasts. Dr. Judy also points out that one thing often overlooked are mites which are very difficult to find. Other underlying causes would be an allergy or food intolerance. She recommends allergy testing early as well as learning of the pet's genetic background with its parents. She also recommends desensitizing the pet once you know what they are allergic to.
