We touched on it in the website and a few YT vids but here's a video solely to teach this valuable strum. My students have discovered its true power and I hope it helps your rhythm and strumming feel as well. Check out all my lessons at: www.the-art-of-guitar.com

@@user-fy9qn8cb7w i found that when i had strumming problems (im left hamded playing on rh guitars) stepping away and doing some alternative picking/ economy picking lead then coming back to strumming really made it easier; it almost made my wrist “unlock” so to speak but also just turning on the metronome and strumming to to chord changes in all sorts of different strum patterns helped immensely Biggest thing for me with strumming was definitely just getting my wrist unlocked and fixing picking angle in my playing; either way sorry for the rant, hope this helps, cheers

I learned this strum pattern around a year ago and you are correct. With enough practice to make it feel natural it makes a huge difference and helps with timing which in turn makes your strumming much more melodic. It's hard to to to begin with but sooo worth spending time on to get right. Great lesson :)

The only song I recognized in this lesson was the last one but never fear I still enjoyed the lesson. ADHD MOMENT LOL ... When you’re using the guitar with the dark headstock, many times there is a reflection on it that looks like a gigantic spider ! Might want to give the headstock a once over with bug spray or hang your cables differently. Caused my old ticker to skip a beat or two ! LOL. Keep up the good work !

Outstanding video. You are going into time with the strumming patterns. Fundamental, Rock Solid lesson. The beatles, on the rooftop version of "Get Back" should be required learning for all guitarists,bass players and drummers.It's the one one where John says "I hope we passed the audition". Time is everything,and everybody getting to the same place when your foot hits the floor is everything.Everybody in the band is at the same place at the same time. Can't go wrong.

Sometimes I thin k about all these teachers that post videros in RU-vid. It must be really boring to make a video of something as basic as this if your are an accomplished guitar player... unless you are an accomplished guitar player AND a dedicated and passionate teacher. A good one I mean. Mike is a great teacher. His lessons are crystal clear and well designed to help people no matter the playing level. I ca't afford his lessons becasue I live in a country where credit cards are blocked for internet transactions but I am pretty sure his website is fantastic and I'd recommend to anyone. So I watch him here. Keep the good work my friend and thanks!

Really helpful, great sounding strum. I am starting to get it. For people like me who need to count the beats: D:1 AND D:2 U:AND (D No contact):3 AND:U D:4 AND . The up stroke with contact is always on the AND that is to say the second half of the beat, and the D with no contact on beat 3 helps you to keep the rhythm.

I've been watching your vids for the last 6 months or so and I was still *slightly* skeptical about your strumming claims on this . After watching and trying the technique you described I can tell you it was immensely helpful. At a certain point it just clicked. Like, ok thanks I get it now. I've gone back to other songs I'm learning that include strumming and my rhythm and technique is definitely improved. It's not just this video, you have become my go-to for advice and techniques on all things guitar. Your vid on guitar picks has been very helpful as well. I've been a fan of Dunlop picks but I wasn't comfortable with the blue and purple picks. I hadn't tried them in months but have revisited them and I've already moved up to green and love the feel on my electric. It makes sense now why I like the orange and red so much on acoustic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a way that really makes sense to new players. You definitely have a good grasp of how to explain tough concepts and introduce new ideas in an approachable way.

This is my Achilles Heel because I naturally attempt to “muscle” everything I do and like you said, it is hard to miss the strings with a stiff arm. You would think relaxing would be easy but this is going to require some “stiff” practice to be unstiff. I’ll give this technique a try since it seems to force you to relax to do it and maybe finally get over this hurdle. It’s ironic to need to focus on relaxing.

So, this is kind of interesting. I took lessons for only a few months when I first started playing 25 years ago. Since then, I’ve just progressed by playing and figuring the vast majority of things out naturally as I went along. The interesting part is how simply playing over time will eventually bring you to the same methods! I notice this all the time when I’m watching RU-vid guitar videos these days. I was never taught 80% of the techniques I use. Yet, I do use them. Pretty cool!

That’s great advice thanks. The other thing that i learned from Justin Guitar which I found incredibly helpful was that your strumming arm keeps the beat no matter whether it hits the strings. Which is what you were doing. But it bears pointing out for the hard of thinking like I myself am 😁😁
@liberalsrmentallyflawed3611
@liberalsrmentallyflawed3611 3 месяца назад
Keeping your arm moving is a way of staying in time. Just like pattin your foot on the beat. Think of a string tied to your strumming hand and your foot. When you strum down, your foot goes down. When you strum up, your foot comes up.

@@TheArtofGuitar It definitely shows. I've been at it for a week and done two of your lessons so far and I'm further on the guitar now than I've been on any instrument in my life, even back in band class. I'm looking forward to jumping on the website and following your instruction all the way, I'm gonna go from plucking untuned strings up to shredding like Jimmy Page!

I am a newbie. Guitar is something I always wanted to learn never thought I would. So thankful for ppl like u. Wow I got a little emotional writing that sentence lol . Finger picking is where my heart is. Do u have videos for strumming with fingers? I’ll look but often it’s like finding a needle in a hay stack. Wish RU-vid would create a search on another persons page. That would be a feature I might pay for.

This is the strum pattern my guitar teacher taught us in class since we're learning Brown-Eyed Girl which uses the G-cord
