It's not easy to forget, surely? For it illustrates yet again how cruel this daft system of Royal Head of State can be, when personal and even human rights are denied to relatives of the UK's Head of State. Here, a family member is denied a right, the right to choose her marriage partner, that you and I take for granted. And what for? What would it have mattered? The insinuation that it was partly her own fault just rubs salt in the wound. Princess Margaret was a product and victim of the system.
She looks very much like my cousin, she found a married man and waited, but he was worth it - he died young and left her with two children, but alone! She doesn't socialise now! Margaret had a lot of fun with Roddy, it just wasn't permanent or right! 😒 You may never have that loving daddy comfort back, but life, yes? 😪
@@trishkuhne550 I always laugh when people who probably look like 10 miles of Alabama dirt road call other people "average at best". Does it make you feel better about yourself to run others down? I hope so, because it makes you look much worse to the rest of the world 🤷
I don't think she ever got over Peter Margaret was beautiful ahead of her time She wasn't meant to be put in a Box Her dad always said Elizabeth is my pride but Margaret is my joy
Well she loved being who she was til that meant she was not able to have everything she wanted without forfeiting her life in a palace. It was too close in memory to the Abdication how her uncle had been forced to choose and her own mother was behind their forced lifetime exile. This was maybe the karma that it happened to her own daughter!
Margaret would have divorced Peter pretty quickly , she was a rude ..crude .. spoilt..nasty .. snobbish piece of work . Meghan Markle 🦈 wants to be compared to the sweet.. genuine.. kind little 19yr old virgin Princess Diana but she has a lot in common with the sluttish Margaret and Wallis . People should research before commenting on the subject . Margaret would have eaten Markle for breakfast.
@@Moonewitch her mother would not allow Wallis to be received at Court so how could it be ok for her daughter to keep everything. Margaret paid the price.
@@doravernon1511 I saw in a documentary that she was cremated because she wanted to be interred in the same vault next to her father but there was no room. Because her mother was also going to next to the Dad. The only way it was possible was if she was cremated and her ashes were put in next to her Father. That’s why she was cremated.
Princess Margaret’s life-story proves money, fame and prestige cannot buy happiness. If only she could have married the man she loved, her life probably wouldn’t have been so chaotic. One has to wonder if the Queen regreted telling her “No?” Great presentation. I truly enjoyed this documentary.
Thank you for the footage & l was born on 21 August 1950 on Princess Margaret's birthday & named after her & admire her free spirit & glamorous & that she was a very modern royal
I feel like Margaret, kept the Queen on her toes. And if you hear the story of the Queen having to say no to Margaret, about Peter. You can see, it broke our Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, heart.
Jon, I l appreciate your historical perspective, and even more so, the element of humanity often missing in character analysis of this type. Thank you.
Princess Margaret was such a beautiful young lady .And she was also such a very vivacious young woman what a sad end to her life. Rip princess Margaret 💐💐
That blonde friend of Margaret’s was Sharman Douglas. Douglas hosted Margaret and Snowdon at her home in Arizona during their American visit in ‘65, and they all partied hard, which resulted in the palace prohibiting Margaret from any future visits to the US for quite some time
I heard interviews of those who knew her. They insinuated she was a horrible person. Selfish, absorbed, rude, a user is how she lived according to them.
She was like this and many attest to it! However, she did have many good qualities too. As always with a deceased royal, their flaws are remembered and talked about over their positive qualities.
I love Princess 👸 Margaret Beautiful full of life and enjoyed her abouts on her own terms without concerning of protocols., Thank you for another Royal tale .. Greetings from California 😀
She had a very tragic life...it is very hard to live in the shadows...the stress of it all I'm sure took its toll on her immensely..May she rest in peace....
@@travelseatsyellowlab It's a different time. In those days it was duty to the crown above all, or give up your status. Margaret wasn't exempt from sacrifice. She wanted the perks, then she had to be woman enough to pay the cost.
What utter rubbish! She was born into and grew up in a level of privilege and comfort unimaginable to the majority of us. She could have married the man she loved but didn't love enough to give up all the privileges.
Margaret once sent Fergie a note that said something to the effect of , “You have done more to damage the name and reputation of the monarchy more than anyone past and present!” The nerve of Princess Margaret to say such a thing to Sarah. Yes, Sarah had racey photos published in the newspaper that undoubtedly embarrassed the Crown, but Margaret did as well and multiple affairs under her belt. She looked to be very short-sighted when it came to dishing out condemnation.
Greetings! I always loved/felt bad for the adventures of Princess Margaret. It can't have been an easy/fun life. She was gorgeous as well. If you read this, I hope you have thee best week of your life! YaY!! Enjoy!
Peter was the love of her life and I think it broke her to be denied marriage to him ! She partied, smoked, danced and enjoyed life as she saw it !she loved Elizabeth and
Great video, well presented 😊. She had a privileged life on one hand, but sadly for her she couldn't marry the man she wanted back then. Times have changed. Thank you Jon and have a good week 🙏
I think Margaret was a very charismatic, sensitive and brave woman. She was always sidelined and this made her confused, she was always trying to find a purpose in life. " Now that papa is a king i am nothing ", it's very hard to listen to these words from a 6 years old girl!!! She was so clever and she understood early that her life wouldn't be easy. The press was unfair to her , it caused great stress and contributed greatly to her bad health. Of course she made mistakes, we all do , but i think she run her life the best way she could under strange circumstances. She did her duty to the crown, she was president or patron of numerous organisations and her charity work was impressive especially her devotion to abused children. Always loyal to her sister....i really like her!!!
Pretty sure she only needed to renounce her rights of succession to the throne. Christopher Warwick, author of ‘Princess Margaret: A Life of Contrasts’, claimed Princess Margaret would not have lost her title if she married Townsend, according to papers made available in the National Archives since 2004. She would not have lost her civil list income. '''And unless there’d been a public outcry, she would have carried on with her official role as a member of the Royal Family. The only thing that she would have lost, had she married Townsend, would’ve been her place in the line of succession.” said Mr Warwick. 'National Archive papers show the Queen and former Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden created a plan in 1955, under which Princess Margaret could retain her title and marry Townsend, with her civil list allowance of £6000 a year plus another £9000 from marriage.'
It is difficult enough to find a mate, let alone a "soulmate". As a female of the Royal Family, she was expected to just crank out a few more trophy pieces for history. I truly respect Margaret for forging her path. Tabloids be damned!!! 😄
Great video always loved Princess Margaret! Can you do some videos on the Romanov Royal family? Like how they started out and got control of Russia and what led to the downfall of the Russian Empire?

I truly believe that if she was allowed to marry Peter, she would still be alive today & be a completely different person, more kinder & less diva. I can understand her resentment seeing her sister & mother both marrying their loves of their lives & living happily together, yet she was not. It's obvious she tried to fill that hole with Tony but it couldn't be filled, hence why she drank & smoked so much. I hope now in the afterlife both Peter & Margaret can be together in peace.
She could have married Peter, but chose not to, giving the reason as "mindful of the church's teachings"🤔... She would have had to go into exile and give up her life in a palace. The only reason Armstrong-Jones was acceptable was he hadn't been married before but he didn't like living in a palace!
Margaret was intelligent, modernized and a very interesting personality...a gentle soul and a sharp mind. Unfortunately she was bullied by the press, misunderstood and misrepresented...
Margaret was misunderstood, if she had been allowed to marry the man she loved life would have been different for her, Margaret was a very sad person at times I felt sorry for her
Yes, Wallis saved England. She deserves a bloody statue. If David had of stayed King, the UK would have been lost. The weak government and Queen Mary used Wallis for the fall guy.
Her best friend Lady Glenconner said she had not really loved Townsend and when she found out she would lose her royal money and place in the royal family she decided that was more important than Townsend was🤔🤔
@@tracymcardle1236 According to him and his mates, Lord Glenconner was one of the ones Margaret was going with while Townsend was in Belgium - so it was never the big deal on her part that people claim.
If Princess Margaret had been given a proper education ,her life might have been very different . She had a very high IQ , but her father wrongly thought that for girls ,childhood was about having fun > Even the Queen was not properly educated until she was 12, after her father suddenly became King, after his brother abdicated in December 1936
Princess Margaret should have been sent to St.Paul's gorls school, Wycombe Abbey . She would then have done Schoo; Certificate and Higher School Certificate. If she had gone to University (Oxford or Cambridge) she would have been much happier and had a different set of more suitable friends.
I believe she was always judged wrongly. She was cast aside by everyone. Being second best is never assuring, she had to face too many expectations. Overall she wanted to live life normally but was dragged into royal politics, she had to sacrifice her happiness for the royal status. May her soul rest in peace.
I believe when she wanted to marry this Peter guy she was given the option of giving up her title well she's always a princess but she was given the option to give up her Royal Highness title and all the benefits and money that came with it and she chose not to I can sympathize with her but she made the choice herself
I find it hard to believe the royal family, including George and 'uni-brow' Bowes-Lyon did not entertain the thought that Bertie would one day be king. After all, the family knew that David would not make a suitable king, and Bertie was next in line. David's father always said David would ruin himself, so how could they all not have known?
I don't get how they did not arrange a 'suitable' marriage for David as his siblings all did have arranged marriages: the others were not showing signs of settling down either, apart from Bertie. 🤔
@@mykoniichistorychannel that's a good point, however, George v and Queen Mary did arrange marriages for Prince George, Prince Henry and Princess Mary. So what happened with the heir to the Throne. 🤔. He had been having long standing affairs with married ladies: Freda Dudley-Ward for SEVENTEEN YEARS and Thelma, Lady Furness so he was ripe-for-the-picking with Wallis Simpson.
@@doravernon1511 And they let David get close to 40, which is incredibly old for marriage in those days. Do you think Berties's and uni-brow's marriage was arranged, or at least suggested to them?
@@keepitsimple4629 definitely. Apparently there was an agreement with Earl Strathmore that one of the females in the family would be queen as reward for a favour. Like a gentleman's agreement. It's in a book by John Hamer, "The Falsification of History". The others had marriages arranged, both Henry & George's brides would have been considered on the shelf at that time. Mary would have preferred to stay at home as mother's companion which they used to do back then but they fixed her up with a wealthy landowner twenty years her senior. Princess Victoria, her aunt, was not allowed to marry she had to remain as Queen Alexandra's companion and died a bitter spinster.
She treated people like dirt and put her cigarettes out on valuable Turkish rugs .. Margaret and Markle 🦈🦈 would have been great fun wrestling in mud .
For a spell. Nobody in that family who had looks had them for long, Margaret may have been prettier, but Elizabeth was no slouch in the looks department, and keep her looks a lot longer than Margaret.
@@kenziej4301 , Princess Margaret was very much in a no man's land, regarding her place in the Royal family. And also how to use her position in a way that was effective and authentic to her. In the past she would have been married off to another Prince, or King in Europe, and expected to have children, and do the social rounds within the royalty and aristocracy, plus take part in some sort of charity work. Being a modern princess is a lot harder today in many different ways, compared to the past. Thank you.
Do you have somewhere you list your sources. I liked the quotes from Margret you provided and I'd like to read the full article or book they came from. Also Sources are always nice on a documentary like this.
There is no tragedy at all in being a princess of the house of Windsor she has compensations as having a mother who lived past her 100th birthday a sister who loved her in spite of their differences and two wonderful children wealth and position what more could she want!? She should have Armstrong Jones when she discovered he didn't really loved her and to hell with the Anglican church teachings the church born from a man's lust and who wished to divorce an unloved wife
She was lonely! She lived a life I didn't envy. Under the gaze of the world, she didn't know what her purpose was. She didn't find a passion in life, and just lived the life of an Edwardian aristocrat. I always, even as a child, felt her loneliness.
For Margaret, being born into a royal family was unfortunate. If she'd been born into an ordinary family, I believe she would have become a famous and glamorous actress and lived the life she would have wanted. Who knows, then a royal might have fallen in love with her and married her to live a lavish life. Like Grace Kelly.
You cannot believe Grace Kelly had a "wonderful life", she worked very hard to make Monaco popular and great and be a mother, I doubt she was "happy"!!
I believe the “Firm” needs to rethink the custom of primogeniture in the royal family. The heir and the spare’s jealousy have been at odds in England all through history. For example, dating back to 12th century King Richard’s brother Prince John tried to usurp the throne several times. 15th century King Edward IV and Prince George, 16th Century Queen Mary and Elizabeth I, 18th Century King George III and Prince Edward, and the three contemporary heirs and spare in the news every day. Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, and Prince William and ex royal Harry. The spares behavior rife with excessive drinking and debauchery unbecoming and embarrassing to any family, not just the Royal Family.
@@bewilderedbrit8928 yes, but an alternative would be how the spare is treated and educated. Looking from the outside it appears that something is missing in their mindset to understand the rules and somehow attain a life of purpose and success.
The same thing happened with Prince Joachim of Denmark and his first wife Princess Alexandra .Her marriage was ruined by his heavy drinking and womanising. Now he has a real job as a diplomat , and a happy marriage with his 2nd wife .who has tamed him.Sadly the sister of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway seems unable to settle down and find happiness . Her first husband committed suicide after she went to India to follow an Indian mystic /Guru. The Royal family should be thinking now about how to support Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis by giving them the education that they need to do proper jobs.
Picking someone seventeen years younger was asking for trouble with Llewelyn he left and marrer someone his own age - but asked Margaret's permission🤔. Robin Douglas-Home committed suicide over unrequited love.
People feel like she shouldn’t have had to choose between Peter and being a Princess but it really was a different time. It would have been a huge scandal and caused issues with Elizabeth’s place as head of the church. Especially in a time when monarchy’s were falling all over Europe they couldn’t afford mistakes and losing any favor with the people.
Margaret legacy is she has changed the attitude of royals and divorce unfortunately not in her life time her one true love was Group Captain Townsend but wasn’t allowed ti marry him at the time but her experience finally made change look at Harry and Megan
Why feel sorry for her lf she really loved Peter Townshend she would have gave up her privileges but she put money and a good life before this at least Edward gave everything up for love and the rest of her life his history she made her own bed and lived her life unhappy
Could never take to her. There was just something about her I never liked. It was as if the two daughters’ of E B-L & George VI were like chalk, & cheese. Thank good it was Elizabeth who became our Queen, she must’ve inherited all her goodness from her father. Her mother was a .....
Margaret would have made a terrible Queen if she had been the eldest. Not too intelligent, very snobbish and jealous, selfish and truly spoiled. The UK and Commonwealth would not have been a priority. .
She was very intelligent. She knew that she "reigned" at all the parties. She was the Belle of the Ball and Queen of the Night all rolled into one. Remember, Diva = Queen.
Honestly I feel that she could have done good WITHOUT sitting on any throne - whiny selfish and self centred 🙄 there are innumerable examples of people doing far more with far less & never ever had it easy 👀 an alcoholic and addicted to smoking😶
I think she had a bad accident once she ran a bath took a call from her sister forgot the cold water and scalded her feet I think she was in a wheelchair for a long time after she was very beautiful I think she was the apple of her dad's eye but life was a bumpy road I think for Margaret but she had two great kids
She would not have to give up her title but she would have to give up her income from the Civil List. The Royal Family could have easily given her an allowance to make up the difference. If he had not been divorced, the King and Queen would have approved of the marriage because they were fond of Peter Townsend,
