I fold in half first so that the clean top surfaces of the tent are in contact. Folding in thirds puts the clean top fabric in contact with the dirty groundsheet surface. Just suggesting.

I have a Zpacks Plexamid, which has been replaced with the Plex Solo for good reason. The older tent has a double arc of curved metal struts at the top where the trekking pole sits. Folding the tent up caused those struts to poke through the roof causing leaks. Zpacks was quick to repair that for me but I now use a larger stuff sack to avoid putting pressure on them. If it wasn't so expensive I would absolutely replace it with the Solo.

Very good method of the multiple folds. At times I have had problems with similar tents and not as many folds

On my AT thru, I would simply fold my duplex to fit in the sretchy pocket on the outside of my pack. :

Funny to see that some ul backpackers don't even bother and just stuff the whole tent loosely directly inside their pack. I've never tried it but it seems that if its not to tight, you can stuff a dcf tent without damaging it. Curious to know your opinion on that.

Thanks for the question! I have stuffed before, as well. I find in most cases, it takes up way too much space that way (assuming DCF), even if you're trying to fill out space in the pack. Sometimes I'll fold it larger and put it against the back panel without a stuff sack if I need to get creative to get everything to fit. Also the mylar in dcf has some stretch to it, and I've heard that stuffing can cause weird deformations in the tent shape. My Duomid is a bit wonky and I assume that's what its from (I used to stuff it loose in my pack.)

@@timbschwartz Thanks for your answer. Makes sense. For the Duomid, I don't know where it's wonky but I know that DCF tend to shrink a bit as it's used. That's why some companies (like Durston on their Pro tents) have a pre-shrinking process that they do before building the shelter. It's especially useful on shelter using zippered doors because with time DCF shrinks but the zipper doesn't so it makes the tent almost impossible to pitch tight. As far as I know, MLD doesn't pre-shrink the DCF that they use. Maybe that's what you're having with yours?

Do you do it the same way if the ground is super wet or muddy?

Great question! Yup, I still pack it up much the same way, but I usually carry a ground sheet of some kind which helps. I just give the whole tent a good shake. If no groundsheet and it's especially gross out, I'll just do all the folding in the air and roll it on my knees.

While I think Zpacks products are amazing & my gear looks like a Zpacks commercial their tents are not on my list… I think I’ll keep it simple & stick with my tarp
