The Cartoon Network series Steven Universe is an adventure show about a boy with super powers derived from an interstellar gemstone in his belly. But in many ways it’s also a coming-of-age story about a young man growing up and trying to find his place in the world. In this episode we discussing how Steven’s empathic superpowers function as a subversion of traditional boy hero tropes.

One thing not mentioned in the episode I think that should be brought up is how Steven got a lot of his values instilled in him by his dad. Being a father and teaching your son about positive communication, expressing yourself, etc is incredibly important to this as well.

I think Aang from ATLA was another young male character who embodied this trope to some extent, especially when you consider his pacifist nature and his air-bending powers (which are somewhat inherently less violent and destructive than the other elements). His role as the avatar largely centered around his duty to serve as a bridge between cultural and spiritual divides. Likewise, the entire climax of that show culminated in Aang rejecting all the advice he received from his mentors and past lives and finding a non-violent, non-lethal way to bring about peace and end his conflict with the Fire Lord.

This makes me think of the Diamonds' depiction in the most recent Steven Bomb. We were all expecting Yellow Diamond's song to be a villain song full of grandeur and evil plans. Instead, we were given a portrait of a person deeply grieving and lashing out at the thing she perceived as having hurt her. Even the main villains of the show are given room to be three dimensional people with emotions and motivations.

I loved that, but hated how soon in the show the Diamonds were humanized. Almost like they are rushing the show :/

What I really like about Steven Universe is that learning to be "masculine" isn't even a thought that occurs to Steven. He learns to traverse his mentors' (sometimes harmful) expectations and must learn to forge his own path and decide who he is. He's not disappointed in specializing in defense, far from it, he doesn't enjoy fighting. It's interesting to see new characters that view Steven's compassion as manipulation because of their experiences with his mother, the looming "Hero Figure" of the show.

I love Steven Universe. One of my guy friends told me that it was "too sweet" so he couldn't enjoy it. He thought that she was catering to only woman and if she wanted to appeal to a larger audience ie older adult men with "traditional values" that she should take out all the sweetness and niceness. And I'm going to assume lesbian scenes. He said that because after he complained about it for 10 minutes I said that I loved and it and that maybe he wasn't the target audience. Which pissed him off greatly. He felt all shows should cater to him. I think it's an important show for everyone. My friend is raising her son with her wife and he has asked many times why his family is never reflected in cartoons he watches. He loves Steven Universe. I love Steven's empathy and love for his family and friends. I thought your video was wonderful.

Rose's Scabbard is one of my very favorite episodes because it practically provides a thesis statement on Steven's character and the nature of his heroism. This is a boy whose very existence negates that of his mother, a person beloved and very nearly worshiped by his adoptive family, and yet, after Pearl's outburst in which she shouts that he can't understand because he never even met her, instead of being dwelling on his own pain and doubt, Steven chases after her, finds a simple and honest way to simultaneously acknowledge her loss and remind her that he is here and loves her, and connects with her past while working to cheer her up. The image of Pearl riding behind Steven on Lion with that dazed and exhausted look on her face and glancing down at him, the confident, emotional hero, is one that I, a grown-ass man, recall when I need to remember what kind of person I want to be. Batman: The Animated Series is actually a very bad counter-example because one of the things that made it so special is that the antagonists were complex characters-often tragic ones. Pretty much everyone from the mobsters to the supervillains was "bad" or insane because of things that happened to or were done to them in their past. There are a few ruthless, greedy crime bosses like Thorne or Roland Daggett, but for the most part the series was interested in giving characters redemption stories; look at Arnold Stromwell or the episode in which Harley Quinn is released from Arkham and struggles to adjust to life outside. In fact, I would argue that this is a core quality of Batman's character: while he may at times be skeptical and even cynical, he needs to believe in the possibility that his adversaries can be redeemed and live normal lives because he needs to believe that *he* can do the same. This drive is tied into his refusal to kill; it's not just that he values life after having his parents taken from him but also that he cares for these villains and hopes to see them healed. It's not a theme that's unique to The Animated Series, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a version of Batman that more consistently demonstrates this aspect of his character.
@internisus
@internisus 8 лет назад
That's unfair. The show is merely resetting to a status quo; like most cartoons of its time, it doesn't have a serial narrative and doesn't change over time, so it can't really allow all of these supervillains to be fully redeemed. Besides, when they fail to rejoin society it's tragic, and that's the nature of the show; you can't write off the interest in the possibility of their redemption (or the protagonist's concern) just because the series is predisposed to tragedy. It keeps the door open for hope, and that means something. Why do you think it tells these particular stories in the first place? Besides, when Steven fails to heal corrupted gems, do you hold it against him as evidence that he doesn't actually care because if he actually cared he would succeed? Of course not. But you're basically saying that Batman doesn't really care because the mental health professionals in his city are finding the Joker to be a bit of a challenge. What exactly would you have him do rather than return his enemies to Arkham? Bruce Wayne became Batman ostensibly to prevent crime but symbolically to fight death itself, to make sure that no one else loses people the way he did. You'd have to be pretty cynical to boil that down to him being Batman "to feel better about himself." No, he didn't set out explicitly to redeem villains, and he's not Steven Universe, but he does express concern for and show compassion towards members of the rogues' gallery. This is a Batman who brings sick villains into his home to try to figure out how to help them. A lot of his confrontations start out with him pleading for the villain to lay down their weapons and let him help them. Again, look at the care shown in understanding what makes each of the villains tick and how they are motivated by tragedy. Look at the small gestures of kindness and understanding. Look at Harley's Holiday and the way it ends. Look at how Baby Doll ends. TAS's structure may not allow for any redemption story to have a happy ending, but you have to ignore a lot to say that this isn't a show and a character that empathize with the villains.
@internisus
@internisus 8 лет назад
Your entire argument is predicated upon narrative demands that exceed the fundamentally procedural structure of the series. Every point you make is basically "this doesn't change" or "there's no follow-up on this," but there can't be because the show's stories stand alone rather than forming a serial narrative. Criticizing it so thoroughly outside the parameters of what it could possibly have done is completely unreasonable.

honestly I think it really is harder and more courageous to be the voice of reason and de-escalate a violent situation. It's very easy to react to with violence when under attack. It's MUCH harder to only defend yourself and attempt to calm the aggressor. That's exactly why law enforcement has SPECIALLY TRAINED negotiators for when their guns can't reliably solve the situation.

There needs to be more media that teaches boys to be more empathetic and that showing emotion isn't a sign of weakness, but of strength.

Isn't Aang from The Last Airbender a bit like that to? There's still the idea of "fighting" as a rite of passage but the elements are also shown to have none violent side. And he is shown to be compassionate (can't stop himself from helping others) and believe Zuko and him could be friend if their tribe aren't at war.

there's also a little bit of that in Adventure Time, which in its early seasons may have been presented as a very ordinary "boy becomes hero" tipe of deal, but as it has progressed all of their characters have gained depth, not only have they befriended and understood the Ice King (who was presented as the original villian) but also other characters, such as princess bubblegum, have grown out of their stereotype. No one is "evil" in adventure time, all of them have committed mistakes and done bad things, but no one is "bad" per se.

It's about time we put more celebration into heroic empathy in the world. Boys just aren't getting those values taught to them until later in life, and as a whole, society would just be far better off with less glory in victory and more lessons in cooperation.

I've literally never watched SU (haven't been into cartoons for nearly 15 years now, much less those made for children) so I never understood why the show seems to be collecting so much hatred and pushback. Inside three minutes, it all makes sense. People (particularly men) get really angry when their favorite dumb macho tropes are deconstructed or inverted. Back when tabletop-game-style RPGs were becoming popular, being the "healer" team-member was seen as being unmanly or feminine, or even an indication that the player must surely be a homosexual. Kindness is weakness, and violence is strength, is a terribly divisive way to see the world, especially when it actually seems to be true.
@nitewarden

I think they've started to address this in recent episodes, but sometimes I've found Steven's actionable empathy somewhat irritating. He kind of forces his personal worldview on his friends and family by demanding resolution almost on the spot. Not everyone heals from emotional hurts or can process feelings in the moment. This could be because he's a kid or simply because of the storytelling limitations of an 11 minute episode. I think in the episode where he goes to rescue his dad, he does recognize that in his attempts to cure all the hurts of the world, his choices can occasionally end up inadvertently hurting the people he cares about.

I have 2 points I'd like to make. One -- Steven's hyper-empathy is pretty much confirmed in "Out of this World" and subsequent episodes, where Steven cries every time he comes close to a character who is grieving. (I won't say who, for spoileriffic reasons.) Two -- the DC Animated Universe, as with all incarnations of DC, has Plastic Man. He is a former thief and villain, and his redemption, although a rocky road, has stuck. The "Evil is evil" concept is argued by the circumstances of the redemption of each character.

you know, I love the idea of exploring empathy as a "superpower" in fiction, especially with male characters. (one of my favorite shows, the bright sessions, is about people with superpowers in therapy, and one of the main characters is a teenage boy whose superpower is empathy. that's it, he feels others emotions) I feel like characters like that helps boys be more comfortable in being sensitive and learn to consider others emotions too. great video by the way!

Speaking of shield bearing heroes named Steven, as much as I love Captain America it does disappoint me that for the most part he is just another hero that uses violence to solve the problem. The only villain he redeemed was Bucky and that's because he already knew him. However he is by and large one of the most empathic heroes out there. But Squirrel Girl is the best for this, she has made friends with most of her enemies and that's awesome.

This threw me off so hard but in a good way. So much of the cartoons I grew up with used violence single-handedly as the method of resolving conflict. Seeing open communication being promoted as a way of resolving issues, rather than straight up aggression and domination, is a really positive step. It's sort of sad I feel so taken aback by it though?!

Mr. Freeze ultimately ends up redeemed in the DCAU... Yeah I know, definitely an exception. But it does happen. Harley Quinn apparently gets her act together too, since she's last seen paying bail for her granddaughters and chastising them for breaking the law (admittedly, a bit more enthusiastically than was probably necessary). I'd argue against "villainy is what they are" in at least a few other cases, too (Ultra-Humanite, Solomon Grundy, Cheetah, Catwoman, Two-face (Harvey's still in there somewhere) Trickster (though calling him a villain might be a stretch) etc.) I always felt there was at least a touch of hope for those guys. Maybe I'm just sentimental.

I think you did a great disservice to Batman TAS by saying the heroes have no empathy for the villains, nor do the villains attempt to be redeemed. Harley Quinn above all others, imo, is a very "grey" area villain. Batman tries on multiple occasions to get through to her, to make her understand that her relationship with the Joker is unhealthy and abusive.
@PopCultureDetective
@PopCultureDetective 8 лет назад
I said Batman villains can't be redeemed and that's true. Even on the few occasions when Batman tries to talk Harley or Ivy out of a life of crime, it doesn't work and they always end up back in Arkham by the end of the story. Intentional or not, the underlying message is "Once a criminal, always a criminal." There are more "fake reformed" narrative arcs in the animated series' than you can shake a stick at. That holds true in the games, movies and nearly all the comics too.
@PhilipPetrunak
@PhilipPetrunak 8 лет назад
That's one of the things I hate the most about batman, and superhero comics in general. Fans and creatorss love these villians, just like the heroes. We want to see more, we want to see them return to doing what they do. The problem is, this causes a strict narrative to be created. Heroes and other "good" characters are good. Forever. Villians and other "bad" characters are also bad. Forever. Even if one writer wants to reform a villain, or corrupt a hero, some other writer will come along who prefers them as the character they were originally introduced as. The narrative this creates isn't exclusive to batman, or even comics, but any media where one writer frequently takes complete control over another. And because of the frequency we see this happen with comics "heroes" and "villians" are always stuck in that role and refused to be allowed to develop further. It's so bad that many writers will simply stop trying to change characters because they know the changes won't stick, and will only convolute the character's history within the comics. What were left with is a narrative that Justifies not punishing heroes when they do something wrong, and demonizes any attempt to reform villains. Even if a hero makes a mistake, or does something bad, it's baked into the narrative that they still a "good person" a heart, and punishing them for anything they do wrong in the long run makes no sense. It's better to forgive good guys once they make a mistake. Likewise with villains it also makes no sense to try and rehabilitate them. They will always re-offend, and even kill people. In the end, the only way to really stop villains is to kill them. This all pushes a simplistic "good vs evil" ideology that has real world implications. It's the reason we so rarely punish prosecutors, policemen, judges and anyone else in the justice system when they commit crimes. Criminals on the other hand, especially POC, aboriginals and poor people are thought of as irredeemable, and so we should just lock them up forever or kill them as the social parasites they are. You'll often notice people pushing back against police and justice reform are the same ones pushing for mandatory minimums and closing down rehabilitation programs within prisons themselves. This even extends to ideas behind donating organs. Some places have laws against giving new livers to alcoholics, assuming they'll just destroy the new one as well even though research shows 90% of them actually never drink again if they get a new liver. How we put often ridiculous limitations on access to the most basic social programs while allow the rich and powerful to abuse the system. It's how a supposed billionaire can not pay any income taxes for 20 years. Obviously, batman is the worst for this. The villains aren't simply sent to prison, they're sent to a mental health institution even though almost all of them are serial killers, Harley Quinn included BTW. Personally, the worst example of this in Children's television right now is Transformers RID. Where the heroes are cops and the villains are all irredeemable decepticon criminals. The only criminal who ever is given a chance to be reformed was an autobot right from the start. Even the villains are all literally dehumanized, as their alt modes are all somehow beastial in one way or another. Now that's a messed up.

an issue i tend to have with this sort of analysis is they tend to leave out important parts of the characters, well, character. for example steven may use a shield, but as stephany he uses a sword and shield like his mother, as he has the understanding that he does indeed need to fight. also occasionally violence IS ACTIVELY encouraged, a few examples are when steven encourages pearl to fight and defeat sugilite, and (against lazules wishes) steven proclaims that you sometimes have to fight people when they wish harm on people you care about. dont get me wrong, i really enjoy steven universe, my issue is with this type of one sided analysis. masculinity is complex, and proclaiming that one set of values is more important than another, in my opinion, doesnt do any good. and misrepresenting bits of a show does not help support that case either when in actuality many aspects of masculinity is represented.

I really love the role model, but it's painful for me as someone who can't empathize at all, not out of lack of trying but due to mental processes, to watch time after time using logic fail in these same situations or even saying that one could come to those conclusions through non-emotional ways. This isn't something Steven Universe fails at, mind you, oftentimes Steven is just as logical as he is empathetic, but other shows demonstrate the more thought-out sides as lacking in nuance and cold, which is a societal issue. Maybe I'm just sad about not being able to understand other people's emotions the way others seem to, but it remains a distancing mechanism to those with mild form of autism who can't just understand someone. It's never addressed that these are things that can be LEARNED and are not always innate.

Makes me want to watch Stephan universe now! Looks like it has fantastic morals. I also commented strongly against a writing advice you tuber who said not all villians need to be redeemed or even allow the hero to try to redeem them. I was like ummm, no that’s wrong for me all morality dictates that the real purpose should be to redeem the villians whenever possible and keep them away from harming others when not. But redemption and empathy should be the real goal. Great video if I knew how to properly I’d go back to that video and link to this one in a comment to help explain my point. Great stuff.

You asked in one of these Steven videos if you should do more essay like videos such as this one, and I think you should! This video gave me a feel of how Vsause, or Lacy Green videos are usually structured. But it's about different tropes in the pop culture. I would definitely continue watching your videos and I think a lot of other people would too! Also a whole Steven Universe essay video set wouldn't hurt too!

I've been building a D&D character around this idea. He's a monk with a reluctance to fight. I'll definitely incorporate elements of this into him. Thanks!

I 100% disagree with your reading of BTAS. That show has great examples of Batman showing empathy for his villains and a running theme in it is his desire to help them.
@PopCultureDetective
@PopCultureDetective 7 лет назад
On BTAS (as with the rest of the franchise) Batman pays lip service to the idea of helping criminals but the critical point is that he doesn't. He can't. "Helping criminals" the way the show (and Batman himself) justify violent vigilantism. He beats people to a bloody pulp and throws them in jail or Arkham. With very few exceptions, the show never allows criminals to actually reform. The core ideology of the show is "once a criminal, always a criminal." Transformation is not actually shown to be possible. When you stop and think about it, the show is presenting a very right-wing ideology in relationship to criminal justice policy.

Some villain reform does occur in the BTAS comics. I agree with you, though I do wish you did mention Batman's shows of empathy as an example of a male character exhibiting that behavior because those moments are SO important, regardless of whether or not things work out in the end. Thank you for the swift response!

I love you work, I love this analysis, I love Steven Universe, and I love positive role models for boys that subvert 'traditional' expectations of masculinity... But this video did leave me feeling a bit deflated. I realise that it does sit weirdly with me that Steven spends most of the show teaching all his female rolemodels how to demonstrate traditionally 'feminine' virtues. He teaches guys around him, sure (especially Lars), but I guess it feels like 'female' traits don't get to be valued or respected until they're coming from a male. Just like female characters often don't get celebrated until they're 'strong' in typically 'male' ways (ie combat). We need every type of subversion and representation, but I guess right now I just wish women could be the heroes of their own stories, and could be celebrated for things they're usually supposed to be good at, instead of needing to wait for men to be celebrated for those things first. :(
