A Discussion around the Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space. A watch that was discontinued a few years ago but throughout its tenure (2012 - 2020) it has become a cult classic. From its smaller size through to using Alpha hands and a straight lug case, the design of the CK2998 remains one of the best & is a fraction of the price of the coveted Ed White. Why aren't we talking about this watch more?

The First Omega in Space Speedmaster is still my favorite for many reasons. Not everything about it is perfect BUT it remains as one of the only modern "Alpha Hand" models we've ever been given. With so much attention on models like the iconic "Professional" and Ed White Reissue, where's the love for this Classic? What's your take on this piece? 🥃

On May 30th, 2023, I received my FOIS. Back in 2019, on a trip to Vegas, I stopped by a watch store and this watch stood out to me. I didn't know much about watches at the time but to me, it looked perfect. My best friend in the world, my biggest inspiration, my step grandfather, who treated me as if I was his own son, was project supervisor for the Mercury and Gemini space capsules. As a kid, I would sit listening to him for hours telling stories about working with the Mercury 7, Gordo and Gus stealing his 63 split window fuelie Corvette, putting water skis on Jackie Kennedy. He passed away 5 years ago and this watch reminds me of him and all the incredible leasons he taught me. I'm a one watch person and I don't see myself ever wearing another.

Great to see the FOIS getting some love! It's criminally underrated and I think will gain more appreciation as time goes by, especially after it was discontinued about 2 years ago. It was my first proper watch and got me into the hobby. I wanted a speedmaster and opted for the FOIS due to it's smaller dimensions and more unique look compared to the pros. I consider it to be the "dressy" speedy and stands apart from all the others. When it's on the Forstner flatlink bracelet it completes the vintage look. These have jumped up in value since being discontinued and I think that says a lot about this piece. It's a keeper for sure.
@ID-Guy

Agree fully. A real underrated gem and it'll continue to garner interest over the years. Love that whole "dressiness" quality to a professional watch - it adds a different dynamic all together. Excellently said brother and thank you for this (straight lug Omega cased models will always have a special place in our hearts 😉🥃)

Great video! A dream watch which became a reality when I picked it up 3 years ago and the salesman telling me that I couldn’t choose a better time to purchase it because of the discontinuation without knowing about it. To this day, it’s my most worn watch, the watch I wore at my wedding and still have the same feeling every time it’s on my wrist just the way I felt when I had it in my hands for the first time. The reason of choice was simply because of the smaller case, the dressy look with the alpha hands, applied logo and the straight lugs. A true icon indeed that will forever stay in my collection. Cheers!

What makes First omega in space more meaningful is like it’s the first step into a new frontier. Eg. 1st baby steps; 1st birthday; 1st time into the pool. After that, it’s just a matter of going further & further, like going to moon or Saturn is like swimming 50m to 100m or from walking to running.

So many different variations of the Omega Speedmaster. What I appreciate is the fact that for a watch enthusiast, should they really want to, they can get into one. From the simpler 3511.50 (and variations) all the way up to a professional. I always saw an Omega Speedmaster on a dark leather strap as the perfect sunday coffeeshop / book reading watch. Great video - thank you!

This will never leave me. It's so special to me I wore it last time to my wedding which was a year ago and bought a 1861 Pro as a daily because i find the FOIS to special for me to be a daily. Nothing quite like a watch regret, man... AND I do have a feeling that they won't be leaving this property. The CK2998 is a genuine icon of thiers (and those Alpha hands are just too damn sexy for them to leave out) SO my thinking is we'll see a 321 variation one of these days in precious metal... if we're really lucky, you might be spot on, a 3861 variation 🔥

Wally Schirra made the right choice! I agree with most of the points you’ve made in this excellent video. I love the clear, sharp look of the hands on the plain, sparse dial (no “Professional” script) and the slightly smaller size. The alpha hands are so beautiful, although lume-lovers may find them a bit underwhelming. It is also so much easier to wind than the Pro. I don’t use the chrono much, if at all, and I often think that I would prefer the small chrono hands to match the running seconds, especially as I use the NASA-approved Forstner mesh bracelet, the finish of which matches that of the watch case perfectly. I think the original leather strap is the low-point of this watch, but agree with others that a decent leather strap is great to give the FOiS a more relaxed and sophisticated look. In a one-Speedy (or one-watch) collection, this would be an easy choice for me. This video has made me realise that I have always enjoyed your thoughtful reviews, so I’ve subscribed - please keep it up.
@marcgirard7551

Excellent video and discussion as always. For me, the panda variant of shown in this video would be a great choice but I’d be pressed to drop that money on that watch over the Professional or alternatively a Zenith Chrono or Tudor BB Chrono. I have to say, I’m a sucker for the curved Omega lugs and always find them missing when they show the straight lug cases!

@ID-Guy Год назад
Thank you Marc! I've always been obsessed with the CK2998 "racing" model... if only that hadn't shot up in price like they have today... you're absolutely right. I'm so torn between the FOIS and a Hesalite Professional Moonwatch as my first Speedmaster! Thanks for the consistent superb content. To be honest I'm still completely confused - thinking one, then the other. I suspect that the FOIS with it's smaller classic dimensions, alpha hands and tougher sapphire glass will win out in the end. But then again, the hesalite gives such a warm, classic warped hue to the face - damn, I'll never know which one is the best. And you know what that means - I'll probably have to buy both and experience them in real time 😆
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy Год назад
It's a tough one Dom. Something about Hesalite / Acrylic has turned me off lately. It just doesn't feel that I can wear a watch to its full potential when always worrying about scratching the crystal (in a rare case damaging it) - but then I use my watches with all tasks... fixing the car, mowing the lawn, BBQing, Working out etc. and they've had a few scrapes 😆 If it was me I'd always go Sapphire for that added benefit (boxed and domed are even greater because they don't have sharp edges to chip). A pretty lengthy answer from me about nothing hahaha! 😂

@domgledhill4165 Год назад
@@ID-Guy Not at all, thanks I appreciate your thoughts - your answer is very inciteful. This is exactly what I worry about as I like to "live" with my watches too. I think Sapphire is the only way forward (for me) - now the juicy decision between Sapphire Sandwich Moonwatch or FOIS! 🙂

Is the FOIS really smaller than the professional? The difference seems to be mostly the 3861 case is measured including the crown guards. It looks like the dial size is the same, they're both near 39.something across the outside of the bezel.

In 1969 I was 12: impressionable and captivated by NASA. i built on a then normal male obsession with aircraft. You wanted to know the armament of an FW190A4 versus a TA152H4, I was your boy….. I wanted a Speedmaster so much it hurt. I have a memory that says they cost £158 then but that might be More perfervid imagination than memory……. Well I got one in 1990 and for more than 20 years it was my only watch in daily use. It bears those years gracefully, but it’s hardly in concours condition. It gets serviced but I ‘ve never had it refinished; like me it has life scars but it works well. To turn it into a pampered hangar queen would be an insult to a working tool and it’s in my regular rotation and high days wear. There are other grails; mostly unfulfilled, but none match the Speedmaster for involvement.

Superb story Martin and thank you for sharing!. There's something about how an Omega as a first watch just feels amazing. I've been thinking about it a lot recently. Fell for the Trilogy Collection when they arrived in 2017, saved for 3 years and picked up the Seamaster '57 (my first luxury watch) - coincided with my fathers birth year. He passed at the end of last year and the watch was with me all the way through it, I've since fitted it to an Omega mesh (dad always used to wear mesh bracelets) and the watch is untouchable at this point... worn it so much since (like to St Andrews for a round of golf this past week) and frankly, it could be easily my only watch for life. To my eye, the FOIS is a design improvement over the straight lug vintage 2998, and looks simply better. There are many subtleties that are difficult to fully understand that make the FOIS a great package. Hello... I really was looking for a little help here if possible. I recently received 2 men's watches from my parents estate... A LeCoultre and a Universal Geneve (both vintage). Both Solid 18k Gold. (with diamonds). I tried to find out information about the watches, but, no one can help me here. I had the watches opened by a watch jeweler, he got all the info for me that was inside cases, I have all photos and info. Can not find any info online. Can you or anyone help me figure this all out? Would much appreciate any and all help and information. Thank you!

The Fois is getting enough attention. The true hidden gem imho is the early 2000 Broad Arrow cal. 1861. Thanks for the great video !

The last RRP was £4080, which is far more attainable than the £7000 they’re now asking for the classic Speedmaster. Yes Metas certified etc etc, but maybe not everyone buys it for the movement.
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy Год назад
Excellent point and if you're lucky, you can still find these for around £4200 on the second hand market. AND the 1861 will be cheaper to service overall when the time comes... there are so many positives. The only downside is the non-hacking part 😆

For me the alpha hands just make it look so much more like a space watch than the Speedy Pro. It looks like a prototype space instrument which is what the original FOIS was.

Did Rolex actually submit a watch for consideration? I’m not doubting u. I know u carefully research the content. Just heard they never even submitted a watch. Seems an important point, right? Thx for sharing your excellence with watch lovers everywhere.
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy Год назад
Fantastic question! The belief is Rolex did submit a watch (probably a 6239 or 6240 at the time) and the entire name "Cosmograph" originated because they believed (subconsciously) that they had the win - Cosmograph as in "Cosmos"... now they wear that badge on their Daytona proudly, tinted with a bit of shame 😆

I like much about FOIS, first of all, size, symmetry and straight lugs, but can't stand with saphir Chrystal an different small hands, this unsymmetrical in the ideal kills this watch for me :(

Its nice, but I dont think it is underrated. FOIS has been in a lot of cases picked up by people who (wrongly) think it is smaller. It was also mentioned in your video, that it is smaller. Case is missing the crown guard which makes its diameter shorter but overall it wears the same as profesional. I have tried both, something people seldom do. What wears smaller is speedy reduced. Its nice but it is not underrated, no bracelet and in most eyes smaller speedy.
