Thanks for this video. Maybe people will stop calling everything a bluegill if they see this. :) I live near a lake with an awesome warmouth population. Never caught so many 7-9 inch warmouth anywhere else. The colored up breeding males are the prettiest I've ever seen. Super dark with a purple fluorescent sheen and red tipped fins and opercular lobes.

I apologize for the delay (again). This video is over 1 hour so it's the longest I've made so far...by a lot. Anyway I've been having multiple device storage issues that I've never had to deal with. Anyway long story short I had to make 3 shorter videos, save them, delete everything off a 4TB hard drive, and import/put those 3 videos together. Again I'm sorry it's taking so long but it will be up this week because I'm no longer having any kind of speed/performance issues or problems. Thanks again for your interest (and patience) I really appreciate it!

@@ShoalBandit I am catching some very bright colored elongated bass right under the nickajack dam on TN river, but i am struggling to identify them. People call them kentucky spotted bass, but from ur video and maps it seems its more likely that they are alabama bass. Do u have an email where i can send you some pictures? I couldn't find it in description. Or u can get my email from my description and email me, if u don't want to share it here.

In central Texas, anything remotely resembling a sunfish is called a "perch". I'm not sure why that is. This is a very informative video!
@ShoalBandit
@ShoalBandit 2 месяца назад
I've noticed they call them 'perch' in some parts of Oklahoma too and in Florida Black Crappie are often called 'speckled perch'. I haven't found a definitive answer, but I think if/when people bought a freshwater fish to eat in the 19th/20th century they were probably just labeled 'perch'. There are/were commercial fisheries for Yellow Perch and White Perch in New England and the Midwest so maybe the term 'perch' was applied to any small freshwater fish aka panfish good for the table?

this made me go look up the pygmy sunfish and the crappie. i thought they would be in this group, but no they are diff genera. maybe a chart of all centrarchidae would be useful.
@ShoalBandit
@ShoalBandit 7 месяцев назад
If you check my playlists there's one called 'The Sunfish Family'...I did a video for every genus in the sunfish family. When I made those videos (2 years ago) pygmy sunfishes were not formally part of Centrarchidae. FishBase still has them in Elassomatidae but I'm going to add them (and a chart) when I update those videos.

I made the chart in the video, but my channel is so small I don't sell merchandise. If you're talking about that chart, you can save a screen shot of it or send me an email and I'll send a copy. You can also Google 'sunfish ID chart' and find similar charts for sale.

The pumpkin seeds look like the dollars a lot
@ShoalBandit
@ShoalBandit 2 месяца назад
The opercular flap (or ear) of the Dollar Sunfish should be angled upward. They will be level on a Pumpkinseed. Pumpkinseeds also have irregular brown to gold spots that cover the body while the spots on a Dollar Sunfish are usually blue to silver (or some color in between). Most Dollar Sunfish also have spots and/or vermiculations on the opercular flap with a distinct silver margin. On a Pumpkinseed it will be solid black with a red blotch on the rear margin of the flap.
