As a Mario fan, I was pleasantly surprised by this, I feel like it hit all the right notes with being a Mario adaptation. I really enjoyed it, it gave me just what I wanted. Only gripe is I wanted 15 more minutes of this movie so that more things could be fleshed out. Other than that, a 9/10 movie for me
I have two points. 1) I love “Holding Out For a Hero” way too much to complain about it being in the film. 2) Bowser’s storyline is surprisingly game accurate. The film has almost the same plot as Mario Odyssey, especially with Bowser’s motives.
I think Mr Blue sky shouldn’t have been used it’s used in too many movies and it I would have preferred some Nintendo music in that scene like Bomb omb battle field

I literally saw the movie less than an hour ago so here’s my fresh take on the movie: I think it’s a very fun film, right off the bat, all of the Nintendo Easter eggs are really fun to search for, the story is coherent a feels like a general Mario story, and you get used to the voices, I understand if you’re not a fan of Illumination’s use of pop-songs throughout their films, but for me, someone who’s a massive fan of 80s/90s music, I found myself jamming quite a bit, and the retro music fits with the era Mario is from in my opinion, it definitely has its cringeworthy moments, but overall it’s a solid video game movie 8/10 👍
Don’t understand the bowser complaint if your a fan of the video games. It’s pretty much in line with his character. The 80s songs in a game created in the 80s also makes sense
I am a 90s kid but i was never really into video games but i had brothers who were and would play super mario games ALL THE TIME so i have a vague idea of what mario is about. I also watched the cartoon show as a kid and thought that was fun. I really enjoyed this. It felt like a fun fluffy movie from the 90s being both action packed and funny. I especially liked the new elements of bowser wanting to force peach into marriage because he loved her and peach being a strong indepebdent woman who didnt need a man to rescue her. Definitely a fun watch and something i recommend.

Loved it. Can't wait to watch it again. I liked the voice cast. Even Rogen as DK didn't annoy me (except when he did the Rogen laugh during the fight with Mario). I liked how they explained why Mario's and Luigi's voices weren't the over the top voices from the games. The Bowser arc wasn't weird, if you're referring to what I think you're referring. It's literally from Mario Odyssey. I agree, I wish the movie was a little bit longer.
WARNING: Spoilers I absolutely loved this movie! As a 30+ former gamer, I grew up with Mario and Luigi. Luigi's mansion part was great. This movie absolutely made me smile and made me feel like a kid again. Thank you illumination. So many Easter eggs in this one. Great job. Can't wait for Nintendo world to open here in Orlando. Great great movie!!! The fight scenes with DK and Bowser were great
I liked the movie but didnt love it as much as i wanted to. I get where they were going with the Bowswer/Peach storyline bc thats kind of how it is in the games. i just wish maybe they wouldve went with Boswer collecting the stars or conquering the worlds. I'd give it a solid 7/10.
I wasn't expecting this to be the next Forrest Gump, just a fun entertaining movie. My favorite voice actor was Jack Black he was really funny. The movie dragged when it fell too hard into all the Illumination-isms
I feel like the fast pasting was good for a Mario movie tho because Mario in my eyes is always fast paste. All the games are so action packed so I think this movie being super fast pasted was great

I had a lot of fun with this movie, but the story could have been much better. The beats were there, but they never really did much with those.(Could have used a bit more time.) But overall I had a good time. Pretty sure the Bowser storyline is from Mario Odyssey. I haven't played that game yet, but I have seen a few scenes.
Just got through watching it early on noon and it was so freakin good! Nintendo and Illumination did not disappoint and everything worked with the source material to program all of the elements and easter eggs from the Mario video games. I won’t trust any of the critic reviews with a 54% and audience score so far got a 97% so I had a great time watching it to see Mario on the big screen! This is by far my new favorite video game adaptation and I highly recommend it to give it a watch from start to finish!
Because in the games, he just does it. He captures peach and goes on with it. It’s not his main goal; he really wants to capture the mushroom kingdom. But in this they make him kind of a sissy and make his whole motivation about getting with peach, who by the way is a strong women with no story arc whatsoever. That’s just my opinion though.

Miyamoto: "Can you recall when we actually cared about critical reception?" Everyone: "errrr......Mario....Galaxy?" Miyamoto: "I made Star fox on the Wii U and made it fun for the fans....... try again." At the end of the day, For us adults we wish there was more than just 5 chicken nuggets, we adults need at least 10 with some fries and a drink. For the younger audience this absolutely was a fun ride that is likely to be background noise for parents to deal with for the next 5 ytears. But Nintendo wanted to bring a fun experence without careing what people really think..... I think they accomplished what they set out to do. Internationally this will do really really well esp in the Japanese box office.
Really enjoyed the movie. I grew up watching the original movie and played the games all my life. I only went in wanting to have fun, and it worked lol. Jack black and Anya Taylor were my favorite characters. They went above and beyond.
I felt like Mario’s arc was fitting for a video game movie considering how none of us are super good at any video game coming out of the gate but with practice and perseverance we level up to being able to defeat a boss we never would’ve been able to defeat when we first began. Mario’s arc is the arc of anyone who has ever played a video game 😊
My favorite scene in the whole movie, Koopa general was badass and threatening, wanting to kill Mario and then he destroyed the track when he turned into the blue shell.
So Bowser wanting to marry Peach isn’t something that was thrown in there. In Mario Odyssey, the mission of the game is to save Peach because Bowser is forcing her to marry him.

I agree that it definitely rushed plot points especially the ending, but I actually really liked the Bowser story. It made sense to me and Jack Black was incredible as always. I was laughing to tears at a couple of times.

I was flicking back through some if you’re older videos Sean, started with you’re Mad Max ranking video and couldn’t help but laugh at how low budget it is compared to now. But it just shows how hard you’ve worked to get to where you are now. It’s honestly great stuff.
No spoilers, but the plot of this movie really reminded me of the plot in Antman and the Wasp Quantumania😂. Both movies have the main characters get sucked into this unknown world and split apart. Then discover people that live there who help them to find each other. And finally have to defeat a villain who rules the world, trying to ‘conquer’ it.
For a video game movie I'm very excited for this hopefully it doesn't disappoint me and others seeing the good reviews makes me Even more excited thanks for the review
I actually thought thar bowser wanting to marry peach was great. That's his motivation in multiple games and in the FIRST mario movie which was an anime in Japan, that was his motivation as well
I actually disagree with the whole bowser plot line. I think this plot line fit so perfectly because in all the games I think of bowser as this big evil villain but always wants peach so when he just wanted her to marry him i thought that worked really well for someone like bowser. Completely agree with wishing it was longer tho
Spoilers: In the newest Mario game Mario Oddesey, Bowser’s motivation is to marry peach. This didn’t spawn from that game, for it originated from the super Mario world comics, and Is mentioned in Super Paper Mario. I’d say the movie pulls a lot from the Mario word comics, as Peach is more than a damsel in distress and Mario and Luigi are shown as plumbers. They also both end in a wedding scene and both have bowser sing. I Thought it was a great direction to go in as it adds to why Bowser would want to capture peach other than to be a conqueror.
Tbh, that’s not the best way to compare things, at least for me. I’m going to be comparing Mario to other video game adaptations and not Shawshank or Pulp Fiction or Lord of The Rings, cause just no, no way am I going to enjoy it like that. Im going to compare it to Sonic, Cyberpunk, Arcane, Last of Us (more so in adaptation and not writing wise). Tho I can respect that way of seeing things, and I do acknowledge it…
@@NinthShinigami But it absolutely delivers as a Mario film with all the references to the games and stuff but with it's stupidly Fast Pacing and lack of Character Development it fails in some Key parts of making a Great Film. However the complaints about Bowser's motivation and the simple story the movie has are just a joke because if you've played the games before then you know that's how it's supposed to go. Anyways comparing to a movie like Sonic. Sonic is a lot slower movie but it leads you to spending more time with these characters and getting to know them better, the Character development is also decent and well done in both movies. The pacing is weird and fast in Sonic 2 but it actually helps the film since Sonic 1 was slow because it was letting us getting to know the characters and the world and Sonic 2 still finds some time to explore the characters and develop them like the scene where Sonic and Knuckles talk on the Beach after Robotnik betrayed him. It's main focus is the Characters. But the Mario Movie's Main focus was to reference every single Mario game they can which to be fair led to a beautiful Love Letter but it also led to a weak script thanks to the Poor writing of the Film. I've seen many people complain about this and that they wanted to see the worlds and characters be explored more.
I'm not someone who played Mario growing up. I've only partially played one game, and have mostly seen my friends play it. My knowledge of the IP ends at the names of certain popular characters, Charles Martinet the OG voice actor, and the classic sounds and music queues. So I did not get any of the references, or nostalgia kicks. To me, this was an okay fare. I had fun, but it was after years that I wasn't thinking about the film the second I stepped out of the theatre. I loved Jack Black, and the banter between Mario and Donkey Kong though. Those I did really like. Otherwise, this was a 6 out of 10, and a B-.
Hi Sean! Love your videos. Your complaint about Bowsers motivation is perfectly valid! I will say it wasn’t out of nowhere for me because it was his main motivation in two of the more popular mario games after the 2000s began. Doesn’t change whether it works or doesn’t work for you of course, but since I was used to it, it didn’t bother me. He’s also considered quite a comic in the spin offs. I’m glad you liked the movie, and keep it up as always!
Jack Black stole the show I’m not going to lie every line that he did in that menacing voice for Bowser was fantastic Nintendo + Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie gets a 9/10 for me
I remember the theater experience as a kid was great with the original, same with the double dragon movie. Watched them as an adult and yeah a bit terrible lol. Looking forward to seeing this one though
I enjoyed the movie but I wished the other characters, such as Daisy, Wario, and Waluigi, were there. I agree that most plot points were rushed and not fully incorporated. I also believe there should've been more fighting action scenes between Bowser and Mario. They should've never made Bowser be so sentimental and desperate to win Peach over but should've shown more of his angrier side. Also, I know it is a Mario movie but I would've loved to see more of Luigi doing more than just being tied up.
I just saw this movie and I enjoyed it a lot. Pretty good film to me. Nothing oscar worthy story and character wise and not even close to being a perfect film, but it didn’t really need to be. I’d give the film a very solid 8/10.
Chad here - I really enjoyed this movie. I personally liked how "short" it was, because it didn't allow Illumination the chance to overdo it with the comedy. What I like to call the SNL effect. For me it was a kids movie where you, as the adult, go to feel like a kid again. It has soo many Easter eggs that upped the rewatch factor for me, because I know I didn't catch them all. Honestly I thought all the voice acting worked, with one cranky exception, but that was minor. It was beautiful, a true feast for the eyes. So I gave it an 8/10
This movie was sooo good. I grew up with the Mario games so this movie meant a lot to me. And the animation was gorgeous. Such a fun and entertaining movie. It had lots of heart too. (Kind of spoiler): When Mario saved Luigi at the end and they hugged, I got emotional. I love their beautiful brother bond so much 😭 The cast did a good job. I give this movie a 8/10, I really enjoyed it. And I love the post credits scenes. I think there will be a second one for sure
I disagree with you big time on bowser. Bowser kidnapping peach to marry her is a key plot point in many Mario games. It was actually tame here compared to some of the games
I just saw Sean's review for Air even if it was uploaded a couple days ago. I'm currently wearing my black Air Jordan hat and will wear my Air Jordan 13s Bred. My turquoise Nintendo Switch Lite is right next to me and I had a few rounds of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe using Baby Daisy on Mr. Scooty. I'll watch MJ and Mario on the same day. Michael Jordan and Nintendo helped raise me throughout the 80s and 90s. Bigger MJ fan than Nintendo fan. Glad this movie was a B but I'm hearing Air is the best movie of the year according to Sean and Kris Harloff. Kris said it's his favorite movie of the year. Anything associated with Michael Jordan is always great. Just not his Wizards years and his executive/ownership years. Ok, and maybe his baseball stint. I was a little surprised Sean and Kristian liked Air so much. I thought John Wick 4 would remain Sean's favorite movie of the year. I've never seen a single JW film yet but I've been seeing high praises from The Critical Drinker who loves to hate on current movies. Just so happy Ben Affleck hit it out of the park with Air. My Favorite Movies Of The Year Since 2018 2018: Avengers: Infinity War 2019: Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood 2020: Didn't have one. Pandemic. 2021: 8-Bit Christmas 2022: Elvis Top Gun: Maverick is the best movie of 2022 at least for me but Elvis was my favorite. I still love Top Gun: Maverick. Ranks in my top 30 favorite movies of all-time and one of the top 5 best I've seen during the last 20+ years. I'm only going to as far back as 2018 because that's when I started using Movie Pass before getting Regal Unlimited in 2019. My favorite movie of this century is really Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood. I replay it and listen to it like once a week sometimes. I listen to it as often as The Big Lebowski. I love the mostly chill vibe it has that first 2 hours. Hangout movies like that and Dazed And Confused (1993) are so replayable. I'll listen to a lot of Elvis as well. It's looking like Air or perhaps Flash will be my favorite movie of 2023. Only fitting it would be Air since it's '23.
Sean, idk if you've played the recent Mario games but in Super Mario Odyssey the main plot is that Bowser kidnaps Peach to marry her. So, his obsession with Peach and even the wedding are "canon" and didn't come as a surprise for me. Still, I'm seeing it through the eyes of a huge Nintendo fan.
I think the characterisation and direction of Bowser will be understood and appreciated a lot more by massive Mario fans - I loved Bowser here. I’ve come to realise recently that I don’t really care about general audiences - I get why it’s important to appeal to them, but I’m just happy they catered to me as a man child who’s played so much Mario over the past 25 years. Perhaps it’s in light of my horrific expectations, but I thought that was pretty anti-Illumination - so much of what those awful films are, wasn’t here. Not one fart joke! The licensed songs definitely are generic pics but I think I forgive them because they don’t over stay their welcome, they don’t play over dumb dance montages and my expectations for how it could have been were just so incredibly low for how that kinda thing might have played out. Hoping to see this do well, and I’m salivating about what they can do with the source material in the future!
Just saw the Mario movie yesterday, and I absolutely loved it. I had so much fun picking out all of the little references to the games while also enjoying the original story. Probably my favorite part of the movie is Princess Peach. In the games, I never really liked how she was always a damsel in distress. She always felt like an object you had to save instead of being an actual person. In the movie, I love how she's more of a military general and is willing to fight Bowser to the very end. I quite liked Chris Pratt as Mario, but my favorite performances were Jack Black as Bowser (obviously), and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.
Bowser being in love with Peach is in a ton of other Mario media, even the really old origin story cartoons, so that aspect was faithful to the source material. Yes, it's weird, but that's the point.

I absolutely LOVED this movie. As a big Nintendo fan, me and my dad loved this especially. Chris Prat killed it and was way better than expected. Ima give it a 9.5/10
I saw it with a bunch of my college buddies and we had an absolute BLAST. The soundtrack being composed of overused pop songs I felt was intentional and added so much tongue-in-cheek humor to the film. All the humor, from the blue star to Bowser singing about Peach had us wheezing rolling around in our seats. Couldn’t have had a better time.
And the songs fit. With his complaints, I was expecting the songs to be awful. I saw the movie today and I’m like maaaan that’s fine. This song is great here lol.
It was pretty good. Wasn’t anything amazing, felt a bit rushed overall and could’ve done with a bit of beefing up in its story. But it was fun and most of the jokes were actually pretty funny and jack black as bowser was fantastic. However all the 80s music just didn’t work for me, felt so out of place
For a first film it was fantastic. Kept it safe with the story. I'm sure sequels and spin offs will add more story. Only voice I didn't enjoy was kranky Kong for some reason. Christ pratt and Charlie day were fantastic together. Needed more of them 😅 fingers crossed this will do well and we get more nintendo properties. Zelda movie 🤞
maybe you dont play the games much but bowsers motive is very fitting. Super Mario Odyssey is all about him wanting to marry Peach, and a reoccurring theme in the series. idk why you're surprised by that aspect and i feel they did it well enough
Great review Sean and tbh I loved it too it did have a few issues with it as well but I loved the whole cast and the energy they brought to their characters and jack black as Bowser is phenomenal the guy is a legend I hope he does come back for the sequel as well
If the main complaint (for mario fans) is that you wanted more then thats a good sign. They did a good job you are ready for more right out of the gate.
I went into the movie with a open mind to get lost into it. I didn't even notice the music at all. This is a weird complaint. Also Jack Black killed his role. I have no issues with this film. This review felt too critic-ish. We got everything this film needed to do to introduce this universe. Tons of fun to watch.
