The Superior Labor is a Japanese company that offer a wide range of handmade leather and/or canvas goods with solid brass hardware. In this video, I review their products that are planner/journal/stationery related, and show some of my folios and pen pouches. I also share my personal opinion and recommendation toward the end of the video, following a story of my modified Hobonichi Weeks cover.

I’m really loving your in depth reviews! I’d love you to do one of Galen Leather. Like you, I love leather and brass and the aesthetic of TNC/Midori brand is products. I hope I will be able to spring for a Superior Labor item one day. The aesthetic is totally my thing (definitely not Vuitton). As a long time hobbyist, I can totally make my own leather and canvas items. So I am always thinking I should just make my own. But I’m sure you know how it is. If you know all the work and care involved in making a fine tool or accessory that will last a lifetime, that just makes our admiration for companies like Superior Labor grow, then we want to buy their lovely unique items as well.

Thank you for such an in-depth review. I would also love to know your thoughts about the German brands Roterfaden and X17 as someone who knows a lot about leather.

Such a beautiful product. Of course I wish it were a bit less expensive, but it’s so worth the price. Excellent review. I have to check out one of their canvas products.

Will you consider making a video about the superior labor personal organizer? Thank you!

I think it´s a bit weird of you to give them a lower grade for the hardware just because you know that there are "more expensive" zippers out there in the world. Do you just want the most expensive things? That wouldn't be very customer friendly. More expensive zippers may not be worth it, and from what you have said, and what I have seen in this video, I would say these zippers look A++ to me. I really like these in depth reviews, btw, please keep them coming!

Thanks for your input! They don't zip as smoothly as the Riri zippers in my mind, and you are right I should have specified. The issue is also that I don't know if the Riri zippers have styles similar to this (from what I've seen they are less industrial looking), so it might also be a stylistic choice. I've had very very smooth zippers from TSL and not so smooth ones as well, so maybe it's less consistent compared to the Riri zippers. I have very limited experience with Riri, the more expensive ones, and all I've seen in reviews are people saying that they are the most expensive and best zippers people use, so I was going with that. Hope that makes sense :)

I think the more interesting parts of a hide are where there is marks, scars, texture, etc. who needs “perfect” leather, there is really no such thing in a natural material.. what a waste of leather..

Haha, you'd be surprised to know that you are definitely the minority here. Most people would prefer to have "perfect" leather, especially for many other countries out there that they sell to. I can think of a few reasons why they do this: 1. marks, scars etc., sometimes affect the strength of the leather, and a lot of the times they are the weaker spots on the hide; 2. For a company that sells through many international retailers, the only way to ensure consistency to all countries and customers is to use the same, "perfect" leather for all of their products; 3. they sell the rejected pieces as scraps so they are not wasted. And by "scraps", I mean huge pieces that are upwards 4-5 sqft. Not like the scraps you can buy from another well known maker based in the US that are sometimes barely enough to make a coaster. When I bought the scraps from TSL, I was able to make many many leather covers from the pieces they sent me, and honestly probably some smaller purses if I wanted to. To me personally, I really like that I can get those leathers from them. It would be ideal if they can offer both kinds of products and offer a discount on the less "perfect" leather ones, since those marks are what makes a hide cheaper to buy to begin with. However, logistically that might just be too complicated to do, which I also understand.
