Prior to the First World War, ghostly apparitions across battlefields tended to be confined to large scale skirmishes fought in the skies. In America, Modern folklore has helped to spawn a cottage industry within the tourist trade of Civil War battlefields. The equation of such high death rates, paired with intense levels of trauma seems to equate to an acceptance that wars were surely the perfect breeding grounds for the supernatural. Though this doesn’t always appear to ring true, war is, nevertheless, a ripe area for some very bizarre stories.

Having lived in Cambodia for several years from the early 90s, I can imagine the lost ghost tapes would have had a major effect. The 15-day Buddhist festival of Pchum Ben is to honor the dead, and in Cambodia, takes on a special significance as many dead family members are truly lost. During the Khmer Rouge times, countless people just "disappeared" and did not receive funeral rites. They are feared to wander as "hungry ghosts".

Little wonder that they were hallucinating! After a battle like that, then having to March all day & night! Cannot imagine the state of these poor men. One thing is for certain, their was no intervention divine or otherwise in that terrible, terrible slaughter!!!

I haven't heard that PTSD or "shock" is associated with hallucinations particularly, it seems more a convenient shorthand way for clinicians and others to dismiss something weird that would otherwise demand proper examination - and a dissolving of the bias of materialism! "Hallucination" covers a lot of different phenomena in the common vernacular, whereas flashbacks in PTSD are a specific thing. As someone with lived personal experiences of non-physical beings (and I'm a scientist, I know about objective observation and analysis), I don't doubt that around battlefields, when many are facing critical life and death choices all at once, and guides "on the other side" are watching over them in these situations, the barrier between realms of consciousness may perhaps be thinner generally, so there is an opening for wider so-called supernatural experiences to occur. Also many people dying very suddenly, with little concept of an afterlife, therefore remaining in a state of confusion for a while. Some time in the future, I hope that such a subject could be scientifically studied as there are many levels of interest here, to do with emotions, consciousness, conscience, etc. I've long thought that PTSD in people with military experience is due to a deep inner conflict between conscience (our knowledge as spiritual beings that killing is generally not a good thing) and our shallow consciousness in the 3D realm where as humans living in this world, we follow what our society/government thinks is a good thing, especially concerning war as a way to resolve differences or disempower despots. Hence a profound conflict between our spiritual and physical consciousnesses which present-day psychology is woefully unprepared to deal with. That people with shell-shock or PTSD have been shunned and victimised is a shame on our society. These people are signposts for the rest of us, that we need to find better ways of resolving conflict, understanding nationalism and our urge to defend it, all sorts of things. Always loved the story of the Angel of Mons, one of those that if it isn't true, it should be! Can't help but think similar psycho-narrative processes were at work when the Old Testament was written, and some of the New. (Was it Camus? Miller? someone else? who said there was more truth in novels than non-fiction. I always got that, on some level.) We humans love these epics with a cosmic, moral turn to them. In Adelaide, Sth. Australia, is I think one of the best war memorial sculptures I've seen, which always makes me think of this Angel.
