Clowes and Burns are like the Lynch and Cronenberg of Indie Comics... with some common grounds and crossovers in terms concepts, subject matters and audiences but yet very distinct and individual. Clowes is closer to Lynch with the strip-mining of the absurdist, surrealist subconscious terrain. Burns mastery of the body horror is very Cronenberg.

Charles Burns' remix of the Marvel Try-Out book was published as "Naked Snack" in Kitchen Sink's short-lived anthology Buzz (1990-1991), in issues 2 and 3. Lots of other great stuff in Buzz too--Woodring, Clowes, Drew Friedman, Roy Tompkins, Mack White. 17-year-old me should have made that info more clear when I originally wrote that article! Also, I don't want to be "that guy", but the issue of Jim you guys show is actually from the second volume of the series which didn't start until 1993. The original 4-issue magazine-sized series (volume 1) was the only Jim available at the time, and Woodring's Frank strips were still fairly new, with the character only appearing in a few anthology strips and the color one-shot.

Thanks Tom. You caught us. We just show off the stuff that we have on deck, rather than time specific. The blog is incredible! Keep it up. We don't know that our Wizard coverage will continue beyond the issue with the last Palmer's Picks.

Well, that leaves you guys with about 60 more issues to cover!

Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron is one of my favorite books. It's so amazing on so many levels. I bought the Complete Eightball hardcover collection just to have those in a prestige format. Also, I had no idea Dog Boy was a comic! I am definitely going to have to pick that up. Dog Boy and liquid television is great. That's also how I got into Richard Sala with Invisible Hands.

Reading "Black Hole" was a turning point for me in comics, that is for sure. I only really had a traditional comic shop, had a selection of indies but really only the most popular stuff so before the internet I never heard of a lot of this stuff or even if I had, I couldn't find it anywhere. Black Hole was one of the first pieces I was ever able to get. Blew my mind wide open - I reread the collected edition about once a year or two. It is so beautiful and unnerving in both art and story...it is a book that I feel makes any reader uncomfortable, at least slightly. It is on my mountain of books, not just graphic novels, that I tell people to read when they ask for recommendations. I feel it is nearly a perfect book.

This is such a great video! All my favorites in this. Would love to hear more about Clowes' writing process for Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron. I'd love to track down that interview.

Re: Charles Burns color. He painted on the back of clear acetate printouts of the line work.

A new movie that feels very influenced by Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron is the Ari Aster film, Beau is Afraid.

There are comics by the Hernandez brothers that have existential horror.

Charles Burns' "Naked Snack" adaptation from the Marvel Tryout book was published in Kitchen Sink's "BUZZ" anthology, in the early 1990's.. If you're a big fan of his work, I would also recommend you follow him on Instagram @ "fictopicto". Judging by the relatively-small amount of Followers, I'd guess that most fans haven't yet realized that he's now on that platform? For artists hoping to glean more info on his inking process, etc. I can suggest trying to find a rare copy of "Cartoonist and Comic Artist Magazine #8", where he's interviewed on those things.. Personally, my own wish list would be an art book collecting all of his illustrations for GQ Magazine's "Dr. Sooth" sex advice column. They're pretty hilarious and I have most of them, but I'm sure that I'm still missing a few..

I'm digging this channel a bunch! Curious though; how does kayfabe play out in the realm of comics? I could connect the dots on my end but I'm interested in what ya'll think.
