That depends... There are multiple versions of these stories. You cannot say which is definitive because different cultures have added and interpreted these things. In John Boorman's movie, he DIDN'T split the difference and just made it one sword from beginning to end. I've read another version where there were three swords. Pick and choose but don't kid yourself into thinking there's a definitive version of the storyline...

They are likely the same sword. The naming conventions are different depending on the story. But if you look at the words: 'Caliburn' and 'Excalibur', you can see the core root 'calibur'' portion common to both.

This video is awesome. I'm a huge fan of the story of King Arthur and Excalibur. I've often wondered about the true origins of the phrase "Sword in the Stone". I've has similar thoughts about Arthur pulling a sword from a stone.

I read somewhere that excalibur was made from damascus steel. And that is why it was such a durable and powerful sword. In this era steel was still in its infancy. Whereas in other cultures, they had perfected it.
@havareriksen3395
@havareriksen3395 7 лет назад
Since no one even knows if King Arthur actually existed at all, we can not know just what kind of blade his sword would have. Damascus steel is a term for the steel used in swords and other weapons that was sold from the middle and far east to Europe through the city of Damascus, which was an important trade city. However, we do not encounter steel in Europe of this king before the 10th century so Excalibur would not have been made of such steel. But it could very well have been made by steel that was pettern welded. Pattern welding is forging together steel of different qualities in several layers, which produces a swirling pattern in the surface of the steel. This method of forging steel was used in Europe already in the early iron age and used up until crucible steel was giving better steel quality, around 9-10th century AD. Damascus steel could be either Wootz steel, which is a crucible steel, or pattern welded. Or a combination of both. But isotopes of trace elements in the steel shows that local steel was used in swords in Europe until the 10th century, when trade brought in steel via Damascus.
@johnny63ism
@johnny63ism Год назад
I read somewhere that first tribe who made steel were Khalibi tribe, who lived in modern day south west Georgia and north east Turkey. As their steel first made and best one, Arthur's word got the name form them exkhalibur and afterwards excalibur. If it could be form Dmascus, it Could form Khalibi as well. These territories are almost at same distance form England.

Excalibur in Latin means 'from steel'. A steel sword around 500AD would've seemed mythical as it would've cut through bronze swords & armour with ease.

Excalibur wasn't the sword he pulled from the stone, if people would fucking pay attention to the real story. Excalibur was the sword he got later from the lady in the lake. And the sword itself wasn't even important, it was the scabbard that was magical, whoever carried it wouldn't bleed. They should be working out the symbolism behind that.

@MismeretMonk - Perhaps, but it's not a good idea to quench any metal in water, most smiths use oil. Water can distemper, warp, and even crack the item being quenched. Only do this if the item has already cooled down significantly by itself, or after quenching in oil.

A beaten and battered Fender Strat was buried into a large stone in Texas. All of the best guitar players in Texas took their turn trying to remove it, but they all failed. Then a skinny kid named Stevie Ray Vaughan wrapped his hands around the neck of this battered Strat and to everyone's amazement it slipped effortlessly from the stone.

Excalibur was given by the lady of the lake and makes you king of England, wales and Scotland still had their own kingdoms
@havareriksen3395
@havareriksen3395 7 лет назад
Not really. The Lady of the Lake gives Excalibur to Arthur because he is the true king. She never states which lands fall into his kingdom. And in the arthurian legends there are many other kings, such as the Fisher king, king Pellinore, king Lot etc. so there were other kingdoms present on the isle. Though many of the tales tie Arthur and his knights to England, the earliest names and tales are welsh. And indeed to this day there are myriads of place names and other connections to Arthur in Wales. He has been labelled king of the Britons, and I guess that is fair.

Excalibur is not the same as the sword in the stone which is Caliburn. Excalibur is merely a modern day name for the sword that Arthur wields after Caliburn breaks it's true name is Caledfwlch.
@havareriksen3395
@havareriksen3395 7 лет назад
Kind of right, but not quite. Caliburn is the latin name of Caledfwlch which is a welsh name. French poets changed the name into Excalibur to better suit their french audience. But you are right in that Excaibur is not the sword in the stone. Arthur is given Excalibur by the Lady of the Lake after his own sword breaks in a duel against king Pellinore. We can not know for sure if that sword was the same as the sword in the stone, as neither of them are named. But Arthur had another sword named Clarent. While Excalibur was a sword for war, Clarent was a sword for peace and was used by Arthur for ceremonial purposes such as knighting. Some believe it was Clarent that was the sword in the stone. But if Clarent was broken in the duel against king Pellinore, it creates a problem since Mordred stole Clarent from Arthur and it is with Clarent that Mordred gives Arthur his fatal wound.

Folded steel was developed because the underlying metal was weak, by certain kinds of steel-making. The folding gives the weapon a level of resilience it would not otherwise have. If the metal is hard enough, you don't have to use this technique.
