As janky as it is, I can still appreciate that the developers over at Bethesda managed to get the message across that the Institute is 3D printing human clones, basically. And I would assume the reason they didn't make it all look like a true to life representation of a sterile lab environment is simply because they wanted the Institute to look more aesthetically pleasing than the blank sheet of paper theme.

My best guess is that the disk the synth is on is a type of template/ computer. And the giant needles are actually pumping human stem cells into the template, and where ever on the template these cells go, they begin replicating whatever organ is there at a rapid rate. Cells created by Shawn's DNA.
@__jonbud______________________
more importantly: they're FEV modified cells acting as stem cells. The template is being pumped full of stuff that's in the general ball park of a significantly refined and intentionally produced version of what The Master was made of in the original Fallout

Yeah I guess that makes some sense. I think most of the needles are just kinda pumping in the fake blood and inflating the organs. Additionally the reason the skin applying liquid is so hot is to kill any leftover nanomachines. Because you don’t want someone stepping into a pair of lungs on ground. There is also a possibility that the underwear is added because a completely naked person is slightly distracting at the best of times, so some high quality stainless underwear is made by some machines that exist in the water that do there thing by following an pattern made by some hydrophobic chemical created in the process when doing there junk.

Mod Idea for FO4: add a side quest where a synth, during the creation process, had some sort of technical issue in the epidermal suffusion station and experiences some kind of Captain Crunch 'Oops! All underwear!' situation where all his skin was made of underwear. After being secretly tossed out of the institute to save some technicians job, you can find him in the glowing sea next to a bunch of blood bugs that he is impervious to because he has underwear where skin should be. Pretty much, he's begging that you take him back to the institute so they can fix him and you can either agree to it or agree to it sarcastically. From there, he can basically fix some of the issues with the vanilla quest line by offloading some of the plot load/subsidizing the options surrounding Kellog, the Lone Survivor, Father, and Virgil throughout various quests. He just pops up in all the choices surrounding the institute's questline from the point in which you return him/meet him. Instead of needing Kellog's brain and a courser chip to reach the institute for the first time, you can simply ask him for directions and piggy-back ride him as he teleports into the institute (during his mishap in the epidermal suffusion process he gained several superpowers including teleportation and the ability to breathe fire). The Lone Survivor can enlist him to perform certain tasks including side quests as they gain more power within the institute or they can appoint him leader after father dies, giving the player character more options for that important plot point. He can also serve as a desperately needed second institute companion (or just have him teach X6-88 how to be cool/threaten him into being cooler with the Lone Survivor) but can also be considered as a Brother Hood of Steel companion if you pass a couple speech and science checks with Elder Maxson and Proctor Quinlan where you convince them to use them as they used Danse as he has superpowers and underwear skin. I'm sure there's other uses for this character but this would mesh in perfectly with the lore as this video shows that the conditions that synths are made in are naturally prone to mishaps and shit. All I ask is that if you use this idea to create anything you incorporate the name 'Calvin' in reference to the famous underwear brand.

synths actually don't seem to get sick like humans do. their bodies aren't biological- at least from what I remember so take this with a grain of salt haha but a big thing i use to back this up is that if you take the permanent debuff of the mole rat disease in vault 81, you and your companion will both usually get the same debuff after any sort of attack by a mole rat there. however, if you take nick here he does not receive the same debuff. also I could have sworn they mentioned something about synths and not getting sick during dialogue with Kellogg, but I also am not sure of this

My head-canon about the creation process: 1) The bones are made of an advanced material that fuses together upon being introduced to electric charges, that's why they can put some partial bones there. The big tube injects stem-cells that are preprogrammed to grow into the cardio-vascular system and the 4 smaller tubes have some kind of growth-stimulator. My assumption as to the mechanical components is that they are grafted onto the bones to make sure they stay in place. 2) As with the previous step, the tube and needles in the back inject growth stimulators for the stem cells that are preprogrammed to grow into the various organs. Similarily, the arms at the front apply the muscle tissue in the same way, with growth-stimulated stem-cells. Why all the stem-cells? Well, remember that they needed a living, unaltered and unmutated tissue sample to get the Synth-process started? The tissue sample that Shaun provided once he was kidnapped? There are many entries that point to this. Oh, on the note of the eyelids, the synth eyelids are muscles because unlike us humans, they failed to make the synth eyelids function like human eyelids sot hey just made muscled-eyelids that open and close on their own. Yes, even they have a limit. 3) Neuroelectrical means the electricity household of the brain, means by this time, the synth has a brain, so it must've been grown in either of the first two steps (personal assumption: along with the cardiovascular system). This time, the tube in the back injects the synthetic blood (which is why we see the body start to get reddish now and not prior), while the frontal arms just dispense electric shocks to get the various systems to start working. I blame bad real-life programming and graphics-engine hiccups for the fact that the needles, tubes and whatnot seem to stab through the body. Again, my headcanon says it doesn't, becaue otherwise they'd really just destroy a carefully assembled synthetic body. 4) As the body is gettings its skin melted onto, the Synth becomes self-aware, conscious, and rises up, getting out of that suffusion-bath. It's not actual skin-broth (otherwise the synth would grow skin everywhere the fluid goes, and aww hell naw if he accidentially drank a gulp), it's a nother growth-stimulant. Basically the super-stimulant, the motherlode. It causes the skin to grow on the body, the hair-follicles to activate, likely also the nails to begin growing. It is the synthetic equivalent tot he aging-enzyme that we biological humans posses that make us age. Now how this broth also knits some undies, don't ask me, that's beyond even my level of bullsh*t explaning. And yes, it is the androgynous base-model that then gets processed to become male or female, old or young, thin or fat, or whatever, at some other location.

A thought; while impractical, and we don't actually see it, there could be a mechanism that slides underwear onto the body Wallace and Grommet style so it has something covering the delicates as the synth gets up. I mean, we literally have Curie, who may well be the most medically qualified person in the commonwealth, agreeing that a synth body is a human one, and her dialog all speaks to how radically different being a synth is from being a robot. Hell, some trappers in Far Harbor even eat one, showing they're clearly made of biological tissue. As far as I can tell the only mechanical part is the synth component, which is probably just a compact version of memory lounger technology that allows them to "program" synths with new memories and directives.

Ah the Institute. I have a theory that Bethesda got awfully confused about the Institute and its methods and motives. Think about it. The motto is “Mankind Redefined” and they constantly work to improve the Synth beyond human limits and the robotics personnel go on and on about how great it would be if they could push beyond human limitations, for example go without sleep. They seem to think that it’s better to be a Synth as if downloading into one is a great thing. And yet as a whole the Institute treats them as machines-as robots to mop the floors and do simple menial tasks and stubbornly refuse to see they could be more. Shaun refuses to allow synthetic implants that perhaps could have saved his life or led to saving his life. I find myself wondering what the purpose of the Synths actually was. They don’t seem to want to become immortal Synths and if they wanted efficient menial labour they perfected that with the Gen2s. Mind you we’re never told why they replace people except in the obvious cases of McDonnough and Warwick. Nothing about that is explained. Just like we don’t get the challenge Shaun on the FEV lab even after we find it and rummage through it. And why they bother abducting Shaun when they could just ask Vault 81 or wake the Vault 111 residents and ask or trade for DNA samples. And then there’s the notion they’re all clones or closely related to Shaun. Aside from the creepiness of romancing Danse and Curie as genetic children or grandchildren, the thought of fertile Synths is entirely icky.

I have something to note about synths drowning in the 'skin vat'! It doesn't really matter how much programming is in their brains at this point. Early infants are capable of holding their breath and even swimming without any training. It's part of 'the mammalian dive reflex'. These synths are capable of full locomotion and even speech shortly after leaving the pool, so I imagine they're pretty far along in their psychological development. Imprinting memories onto someone is not very hard. If you were so inclined, you could drop someone in a life they never lived, and they'd do just fine at blending in. We are insanely susceptible to suggestion if there's enough evidence that we should, and always have behaved in a certain way. I wish the developers explored deeper into the imprinting process and the psychology around it. I'd love to hear about earlier synths who failed to 'fit in' and either were exposed as fakes or just had a mental breakdown, thinking they're insane.
@InquisitorXarius
@InquisitorXarius Год назад
My theory regarding how different synth body types exist is that they actually just use that one body pane but the fine tuning takes place in that processing room. Such to quote myself “fine tuning” includes bodily modifications, personality modifications, memory modifications, and if necessary modifications to the Biological Sex of the Synthetic Hominid. I believe this is possible due to the possibility that while you were chilling in the freezer the institute may have retrieved samples of Nora’s (The Female Player Character Template’s) Bone Marrow and Gametes. My belief in this theory stems from the fact the institute has been shown to have the technology that could allow one half of the chromosomal count to be replaced with another and then apply this accordingly to a biological organism synthetic or not.

4:00 it’s specifically stated in a terminal in I think robotics that that synths all have the same body type and that McDonough’a body type was custom made to imitate the original down to a medical condition the original had apparently. So they have the capacity to make other body types but don’t EDIT: the terminal is in the SRB and states this “I've spoken with Ayo, and we both agree - if the situation does become untenable, reclamation seems unfeasible. M7-62 was specifically engineered to mimic the actual human McDonough. As such, the unit's synthetic biology is that of someone overweight and grossly out of shape. A mem wipe would kill any psychological weaknesses attributed to self-perceived old age, but that body? Lost cause.” Was wrong about the special model but still they do have the frames for different body types

When I did the quest with Harkness, I thought Synths' bodies were mechanical through-and-through, and they were just made to mimick organic human bodies. And from what Nick Valentine says about the Broken Mask Incident, then my thoughts would be well-supported, especially given that your average Wastelander can immediately tell if a dead body belongs to a synth or not just by cutting them open and seeing what's inside. Additionally, synths are immune to radiation damage, which wouldn'tbe the case with an organic being with DNA. So then, why are they making these synths seemingly entirely organic? I feel like this may be the result of miscommunication between the writers and the level designers.

I love your videos, CoA, and all things irradiated in Fallout 4. There is a very interesting and terrible true story about a man who had surgery with the wrong mix of anesthesia so he was actually awake but paralyzed during the process. The doctors, realizing their mistake, administered a drug that triggered short-term memory loss to cover it up. He didn't remember what happened, but later, his family would find him many times screaming and "hallucinating" something indescribable and terrifying. With the help of another doctor and a lawyer, the truth finally came out. Unfortunately the guy couldn't cope with the deep trauma of it all and took his life. I think that example shows the dangerous risks the synth creation process creates... Would be very interesting to see this theme reflected in a Fallout 4 mod.

when it comes to the injectors it is possible that those that are injecting into the skeleton directly are injecting bone marrow cells, and possibly a cellular slurry with enough cells from each tissue type or stem cells to produce the organs that are not directly seen to be placed. That fact that most synths are male makes sense as if I remember correctly Shaun is the template for them, and it is likely that as you suggest there are multiple preset bases, likely two, one male and one female, as if melanin and other color indicating chemicals are produced naturally by the synth then all the institute scientists would have to do would be relatively trivial cosmetic surgeries on the body and increases/decreases in certain hormone productions for desired traits such as height, muscle mass/density, and breast size.

Showing the skinless synth being dipped. Then rather than it growing skin, a new synth is spawned in. What if that liquid is meant to be the only step, well, the only one that we see. The skeleton being put together all for show. Like the drink Slurm in Futurama. The Slurm factory shows the drink being made ommiting the secret ingredient. So if one was to try and replicate it, the absence of this ingredient would prevent it from tasting like propper Slurm. In reality though, none of the ingredients were going into Slurm, Slurm was all just alien slug slime. Soo yeah, maybe the entire process takes place in that red pool. The skeletonm is just for show.

A quick bit of embryology: during embryonic development, different organs come from different layers of the embryo. The so-called entoderm is responsible for the digestive system and the lungs. The mesoderm is responsible for bones (probably only the marrow for synths, as the bones come premade), the musles and some other organs. Then, there is the exoderm. This layer is responsible for making the skin. It is also the layer which makes the nervous system. I think this might mean that the eyes and brain and such are formed when the synth is submerged in skin goob at the end of the manufacturing process, if the various kinds of goop are meant to be suspensions containing stem cells, as I suspect. Nevermind. I hadn't seen the part about the neurological station yet, and I did not remember it.

Set frame, stimpak frame, start auto functions, implant consciousness, dip in skin juice. The reason for the order is probably due to more robust materials the institute uses to make the synths more resistant to disease, rads, and physical damage.
