The SYRP Genie II is (almost) the perfect motorized slider

The SYRP Genie is a motor/wire driven motorized slider. This means that it uses a cable to push it forward. You can choose the length of the cable which makes it virtually endless in length.
Today, we are taking a look at the Genie II 3-Axis Epic Kit which includes the: Magic Carpet carbon Slider, Genie II Linear, and Genie II Pan Tilt head.

Had nothing but issues and multiple motor swaps with SYRP. Had such high hopes for them.

As crazy as it sounds I would love for you to make a separate video on how you make your slider setup with hockey sticks? I have so many broken CF sticks from my playing days I would love to have you demonstrate how to do it?

I have this setup for time lapse, with the carbon long track. Very portable and I agree the app is a little glitchy and the rope frays. Overall I’m very pleased with the system.

So are we! Did you try the new app version? It's significantly better both on stability and added features.

DIYPhotography I tried it for the first time this morning. I always had problems moving the ease out slider in the app, it used to stick. That’s been corrected. For that single feature alone I’m happy! 😁

They also added the bounce which is killer for interviews

This is an awesome concept! I like the expandable rods, i‘ll give this system a closer look. Thanks Udi for the review. One question: How long last the battery here and can it be used with stationary power?
@diyphotography
@diyphotography 5 лет назад
I am not 100% sure about the total time, we tested for a few hours, so you definitely have some time in there. If you want more, you can plug a power bank in, and you can swap them so it will run "forever"

„Forever“ is long enough in most cases.

How long before the rope starts fraying?

It would be great to compare with rhino arc II

A few things: I hope I don't have to rely on using my phone for this the motorized parts seem good. maybe a tad expensive for what they are, but they dont seem to hold that much weight. Sure, most cameras itll be fine, but if im using a big cinema camera which I do every so often, I don't think it'll hold the weight. It might, but it may be pushing it... Wondering if theres an alternative motorized system that would work

Hi Michael, without tilt, it can handle quite a bit of weight. What's your setup?

Good for outdoor use but for indoors (studio work still too noisy unless using it at the lowest speed) I think the rope design contributes to the noise level and as the nylon rope frays the noise level certainly increases markedly. I presume the Linear II uses a stepper motor although I doubt it is of any superior build quality as there is a bit of noise & vibration from it. I have played around with a quite a few stepper motors and found a massive difference in build quality from manufacturer to manufacturer ( for example LIN technologies make superb near silent stepper motors - not cheap though). Overall I still think the Genie II Linear is a good design in that it adds the ability for it to be able to be used on other sliders. maybe Syrp can research into sourcing more durable ropes. I would be scared to use this existing one with the slider in a near-vertical.orientation. . The Linear II is also seriously overpriced for what it does and the added fact that if you use this unit even on a weekly basis you will need a supply of spare rope as it does fray rather quickly and even the spare rope is seriously overpriced. Maybe the next iteration

How would this 'stack' against for example Edelkrone or Dynamic Perceptions Sapphire Pro?? I understood that Edelkrone can't handle that much weight and is not extremely smooth... and Dynamic Perceptions is bulky with a lot of cables.... I like the cable setup, that you could use any 'moving' platform... Still hesitating since these things are all expensive

We found the quality and precision superior to Edelkrone. But then again, you are right, it's a different price point.

nah, Edelkrone isn't cheap either.... they have nice extra features like followfocus, laser aiming, and... the app has some nice 'time' effects (you can speed up or down a timelapse while the slide motion stays the same). What I like with this one, compared to Dynamic Perceptions (which is about the same price), ... no cables! and no additional 'boxes and other stuff'... nice compact 1 solution, with motors inside. Nice to know that you guys think that the quality is better then Edelkrone... which, promotes themselves as 'top quality' :)

How much counterweight is needed for vertical usage? Camera + lens + ballhead less or equal counterweight?
@diyphotography
@diyphotography 4 года назад
You'd need just about the same weight. This will give almost horizontal-like smoothness

How much QUIETER is the Genie 2? Can you do a side by side compare? I'm really hoping they make the Mini 2 soon that is quieter.

It's bearable as long as you don't tilt or go really fast

Although much quieter than the original Genie it is still noisy. Also the rope does work itself a bit loose. Good concept. Above average build quality. Extremely expensive overall.

I was concerned about the cables getting corrupted in a daily use...
@BenoSaradzic
@BenoSaradzic 3 года назад
the rope is carbon fiber reinforced which prevents it from stretching and the result of that are accurate, predictable and repeatable camera moves. The rope itself will fray a bit but never to a point where you won't be able to use it. I'm using Genie I with that cable since it came out, 5 years ago. I still use it for professional work - no issues.
