Wish we'd all been together watching you all on stage, but terrific interview none-the-less. Snazzily edited as well. Thanks to all of you for doing this through all of this.
Don’t lie Rene. I find it strange how critical @Gruber can be on @daringfireball compared to how “easy” he goes on the interviews. Ur schmoozing with them instead of asking any meaningful questions. Listen/watch @MKBHD pod with Craig and learn bc ur losing respect and flame to ur old ass.
Although most questions are valuable and great ones, the speed you talk is like my high school 70 years old Physics teacher ... gotta 2x the speed when you talk :)
@@TaipeiGeek I hate John Gruber for his slow speaking and his beating around the bush. Marques should have made this interview, he would've got ten times more content for us out of these 1 ½ hours …
Maybe it’s just me but I found your move to talk about your sponsors before ending the call to be disrespectful to Craig and Jos. These execs, who usually never appear post shows, are giving you their time. Atleast have the decency to finish the call and then wrap up by mentioning your sponsors. They have no need to listen to your sponsors.
John's knowledge is strong but that doesn't compensate for his very poor table manners re two main points: Talking too much and too slow, and mentioning the sponsors at the end was simply pathetic. Very ignorant and disrespectful to Apple execs.
I wish he would ask a question. He offers softball, obsequious, observations and let’s Craig and Jaws riff for a while. Here’s an opportunity to dig into the “why” of Apple’s plans and it turns into mostly repeat information.
Some of my fav parts from this interview, at 17:30 .. “New ways to provide us feedback and new ways to even challenge decisions that we make, we’re all about what we can do together, that’s what Tim was saying, the world is counting on all of us, apple and our developers to help us move forward, that’s why put so much effort into this week, keynote and these sessions. It’s about what Apple and developers can do to move things forward” at 48:33 “ .. but it gives you a sense of what our silicone team can do and they’re not even trying, and they’re gonna be trying.”
That second one has me all pumped up. I know we are not looking to have 2x performance of a current MBP 16" by next year, but it seems they have something very cool on their sleeves.
I mean given that the latest rumors are pointing out tothe first ARM Mac will be a 13 inch Macbook Pro, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s already the ARM chip for the Mac Pro already working in the labs.
Anyone else forget about this literally every year and then get fucking STOKED when it’s released? 😂 Thanks John, Craig and Jos! Excited for what’s to come.
I really enjoyed MKBHDs interview with Craig but I felt like this guy here was able to ask questions in a better way to get more details about the future of Apple and what these updates are really about. I’m definitely looking forward to the updates now especially the public betas.
John, great interview. However, with all due respect, I'd suggest you balance the talking a bit better - the Apple gentlemen jointly talk less than you do. Don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself. I have much respect for your knowledge, but we really want to hear more of what the Apple fellas have to say.
Long time fan of Daring Fireball. Equally fantastic: The Talk Show, Dithering and WWDC videos. Even enjoy your Twitter feed! Keep up the good work, John!
1:25:38 - Privacy As a German I can confirm this! It‘s ridiculous how indifferent other cultures are about privacy.... and companies... FB,MS,Goo,AZ..... not a fan
@@vslow4795 Not really. He only asks very safe questions. I'm not saying he should nail Craig and Greg to the cross, but he could at least have asked more about controversial topics like Big Sur's new icons. Gruber always incorporates some sort of praise in his questions, never any criticism or at least an explanation for why Apple chose to do the controversial things they did.
@@vandelayindustries2971 Very good example was the short virtualization section. Where was the question about whether it will be possible to run Windows under something like Parallels or VMware. Or some other way. I really want to know that.
@Alijah Simon Also the story telling.... like you either know the story or don't care, so why is he wasting so much time stroking them off to only ask safe questions.
Nice interview, but I think you should have been more critical regarding the App Store. Greg made it sound as if the only way to distribute an application before the App Store was via a publisher, while we all know very well that all indie developers were and are happily selling via their own web sites. It’s quite a feat to pretend that the whole internet doesn’t exist and you shouldn’t have let that slide. This also explains why the Mac App Store isn’t doing well: you simply don’t need it as a developer.
The interviewer is talking and explaining too much, for too long. Why not ask quick and precise questions and give Craig and Greg more time to talk, when we FINALY have a interview with them? Other than than great talk!
I agree. It’s not often/ easy to get an interview to get with an Apple employee, so I wish he would give a bit more time to the people he is interviewing.
Even the production quality of Apple’s video from this is super impressive… and Gruber’s background ain’t half bad either, I wanna see the rest of that room! Great work there Amy. (I presume)
I had same issue with my left ear, kept sliding off. I DIY fixed it by adding memory foam tips in the inside of the outer lip and it fixed it for me. plus I have better seal now
Thank you for doing this, John. This year is very different, but The Talk Show pivoted nicely. Keep safe, everyone, and best wishes to your family and those around you.
Dear Craig Federighi, please fix the Safari HTML rendering bug. It's been 5 years and I don't want to see those thin lines that show up when I zoom in on DIVs in Safari any more if possible.
Definitely a fan of TTS and @gruber, but he always bends over backward in TTS Live to be as polite and non-critical as possible. There was very little content in these interviews, just softball questions in response to which Craig and Joz repeat the marketing lines from the keynote. Oh well, they probably wouldn’t agree to do it if @gruber did a more critical interview.
Agreed 100%. These WWDC shows really fall short. You don’t even have to ask critical questions - just ask something that’s interesting and not fawning. How about “why now for Apple silicon?” Or dig a little deeper about things like Docker on ARM. Craig himself acknowledged there’s a gap between running ARM Linux and what people run in the cloud. Maybe ask about that? Instead it’s “wow you guys are so great at privacy”
i dont think one can expect the guy get these interviewees and then put them up against the all and accuse apple of all the conspiracy theories online...
John's knowledge is strong but that doesn't compensate for his very poor table manners re two main points: Talking too much and too slow, and mentioning the sponsors at the end was simply pathetic. Very ignorant and disrespectful to Apple execs.
I expected a softball question about the HEY controversy, but can't believe he let them off that easy. It really required at least some pointed questions. Some examination of the issue.
Ryan You missed the point. Apple didn’t mention “ARM” a single time during the Keynote and State of the Union even though it’s an incredibly important technical detail, especially for third-party technology (Windows? QT?). Apple wants developers to have a “you use our tools so you don’t need to care” approach, but there are so many third-party build tools that care deeply about the underlying architecture that Apple seems to be ignoring so far. It’s not a good sign for software compatibility.
@@Vim_Tim you genuinely think that the developers of 3rd party build tools are going to look at Apple's consumer keynote to get the relevant technical details of apple's new underlying instruction set? Don't be ridiculous. The details that apple deems to be relevant will be released to the necessary parties in the time to come. It's also a bit far fetched to deduce that that is what OP was talking about when he said "Craig said ARM".
I hope they stick to their word about supporting Intel Macs. I'd argue Power Mac G5 owners did get kinda burned, they only got 2 major OS X updates, and most developers dropped PowerPC in like 2011. With Macs having an expected 5-7 years of software support (because of the expectation that has been built in the last decade), most people are expecting current Intel Macs to be supported until 2025 and beyond. As someone who just bought a Mac Pro, I'm really counting on that.
Anyone using macs during the PowerPC to Intel switch (or even the OS9 to OSX move) won't be sweating this transition at all. As long as developers are on board it will be a fantastic road ahead. Bootcamp is a bummer but at least Parallels will be an option.
it's recorded on separate (big) cameras and mics. and then the video files are send to the editing team. thats how you get the best sound and video quality. additionally you use a device (facetime on a mac or iPad) so that you can hear and see the other presenters.
@@florianalexander9183 They said on MKBHD’s interview with Craig that Craig used an iPhone for the video. Probably great lighting. And no need for a green screen!
@@Seth_Arvila Seems like recording a podcast would have been the ideal demo use case. But let's not kid ourselves. And they certainly weren't going to use the awful webcams built into macbooks!
The dynamic picture characteristics (e.g. local tone mapping) in Craig and Gregs video feeds remind me of iPhone cameras. Did they use iPhones as cameras in their setups?
You guys and you guys, you guys and you guys, you guys and you guys, you guys and you guys, you guys and you guys, you guys and you guys, you guys and you guys, you guys and you guys...
Even when remote, these interviews that John Gruber does are wonderful! I’ve been watching or listening to these for years along with reading Daring Fireball. I would love to see Kevin Lynch join The Talk Show some time to go more in depth about Apple Watch.
I really like the interview questions and responses from Craig and Greg. This format gave several opportunities for the personalities to really shine. However, for a professional podcaster, I’m really disappointed that the sound levels are not balanced between John and his guests. While watching on a TV I found myself turning the volume up to hear John and then back down when Craig spoke; especially if he got enthusiastic.
Anyone else wish Messages app (on all platforms) had the ability to edit/correct a message that has been sent? Really was hoping for this 'feature' in 2020.
John looks as if he's a deer looking at bright lights, is that how it normally is? Craig seemed way more relaxed. And messages is huge... in the US. In Europe and elsewhere it's almost all whatsapp etc.
51:00 No! PowerPC customers were left in the dark with Snow Leopard after 3 and a half years after the last PowerPC product get the stores. When I bought my MacBook Pro, I expect the same amount of time that I got with my 2012 MacBook Pro which is still compatible with the last version of MacOS!
around min 56 is exactly what I was here for. Big sigh of relief. Glad that we will still be able to deactivate System Integrity Protection in the future, since that's super important for apps like Xtra Finder / Karabiner / SwitchResX - Losing those would be a total deal breaker to me.
Great show, John. Thanks for asking about the best path forward of framework to use if starting on a new Mac app today. That's been one of my biggest questions this week.
