Hi Luke! Love your channel. I took geology courses in college a lifetime ago - forgot most of it. But two of the things I do remember is that the Appalachians are the oldest mountains in the world. The second thing is that there are 7 ways mountains can be formed . And the third (out of 2) is you can find an example of all seven types in the Appalachians. Well, I thought that was interesting, anyway.

Mike my friend, you are right, that is the Garmin 62....something something. I don't remember which model I got though. There are a number of different versions. Some with maps, some without, one with a camera, one without. :) Thanks again my friend.

Roots, rocks...reggae Is rhododendron a native species? It looks so out of place in a these forests. Sort of like sumac or kudzu. Looks kind of nice, but then you realize it's a weed that wants to kill everything else.

Hi Luke, ...really enjoying this episode, maybe you've heard of the Taylor & Murphy Const. Co. I worked with them many years on, and around the Parkway. This pictured several areas that I either Worked, or explored after work!

Any suggestions on shortening that hike? My wife has arthritis so can't do all of it in one stretch. Maybe take 2 cars so can make it a one way hike instead of round trip? Thanks.

Hi Luke, always enjoy your videos and sometimes it's fun to go back in time with them in the beginning. I love all the music you share with us and I was wondering if it would be possible to share the music (song) links or who they're by - being the collector of good music that I am. I would appreciate that, and thank you. The blue ridge mountains are Beautiful! It's nice that someone made those stair steps for people to walk on in and around the rocks.

An old friend of mine, fresh out of the Military and Engineering School designed the baskets that were used to lower equipment and materials into position by Helicopter to build the Viaduct. It was his first real job as an Engineer.

I was camping at Julian price campground the day they opened Linn cove viaduct. Campsite was right near the parkway so we had a front row seat to the parade of old cars that went across first. A car for each year it was closed. Parade got held up due to a bomb threat of all things.

The rockpiles is meant to give you good luck on the mountain....you bring a small rock from the start and put it onto the pile at the top that way you please the mountain gods and have a safe trip... :)

Thanks Luke. In my opinion too the hiker must leave no trace after himself except a wet butt mark on the rock.

Nice video.awesome trail! ....I live in Las Vegas and have been putting together a collection of gear (very expensive so far) for my first hiking trip ..the thing is I am 51 and way out of shape for my age and built, got a dangerous belly and lately feel pain just to do a little walk, cholesterol is off the chart and was told by my last visit to the doctor that i was dead and didn't even know it..lol..(thanks doc!, very reassuring!)..so since it seem nothing would let me get into exercise I have developed an obsession with wanting to just hit the trail and go for those trips starting with shorter ones then increasing to overnights and days if possible..the scenery here is all desert but I would drive to north west Nevada and it should change, or even Utah as I have seen many cool spot on my trips there while working and always wondering to stop and get a little hike on my way back home from work..I hiked with an experienced hiker back in 2010 in Heidelberg, Germany for a full day hike up a mountain there to an historic site and I can't let go of the awesome memories. got plenty of videos and pictures and wanted to be on the trail ever since but it have been too long and now I feel like I am running out of time; should have been doing it since long ago..I truly believe I can shed out the 60 pounds I need to go back to shape while having fun..yes I have a tread mill but it is not the same ...uff!!..that said..the cost of the gear is kind of overwhelming as I am trying to buy quality stuff as long as I can afford it and many videos here have helped a lot, yours are awesome...it never ends on the gear part and then I got the family which I want to get into it, wife and kids are not too much exited about it..for now, I have to get back in shape as a main concern and this looks like the answer to do it while having fun but nobody said it would be cheap! unless we go for the genuine bush-craft approach shown in youtubers from the UK!! ...cheers and happy hiking!

You're blessed to live in such a beautiful area with mountains. Here in central Indiana it is flat. All the good trails and hiking/backpacking are in southern Indiana. Elevation changes and scenic views are few.

Boulder fields and rock piles like these make up half of the AT in Pennsylvania. It's some of the most grueling hiking you'll ever do. If you can do a 20 mile day in northeastern PA, you can do it anywhere! I'd love to head down there and do this trail sometime thanks for sharing.

32:09 - yep, it's Rough Ridge. When I lived in Boone that was my weekly hike (when I couldn't drive further). I'd imagine that I've been up and down the Tanawha more than 100 times - thanks for bringing back some memories :)

TheOutdoorGearReview Sadly a little further south to Charlotte - no worries, though, I managed an amazing hike through the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine last June and routinely make it up to Stone Mountain. The mountains are always calling, and I must always go :)

Luke when we went to Devils Tower this past fall we saw a lot of rocks stacked on top of each other. And there they called them Prayer Bundles. They were left there by Indians and they also left prayer cloths in the trees along the trail. Devils Tower is said to be sacred to the American Indians. Not sure if that is the case on the trails you take but I knew I seen them somewhere in the pictures that I took on vacation. According to the site on Devils Tower it is against federal law if you mess with the prayer bundles. And it is disrespectful if you mess with them.

I love how that massive bridge costs as much as a replacement little wood bridge on the 34 mile hike you did... oh how things have changed in a few decades!
