I purchased _The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism and Neoplatonism_ 2nd ed a few weeks ago and have found it to be one of the very best books on Tarot I've ever read. Robert Place is a real scholar and a very good writer. There is so much material in this book, it could easily have been three separate books - but I'm glad it's just one, because he ties all the topics together so well. Highly recommended for anyone serious about Tarot, especially to understand its rich history and the spiritual and cultural traditions out of which it evolved. Robert's perspective as an artist and art historian gives him unique insight into these matters, and reading this book has increased my own understanding of the Tarot by leaps and bounds. So good.
I am a Robert M Place fan. I find him just brilliant. I have done exactly as you have done Simon. The deck I am waiting for him to complete is his TdM. I WANT that deck so badly!!! Lol!! I too enjoy the crispness of the imagery and the coloration. I still think his Lenormand deck with the Rachel Pollack book is my favorite Lenormand. *sigh* Just love.
Love this deck. I have two copies of the first addition. Initially I spent a lot of money on my first deck and then a saw a copy at Watkins in London for £35, a lot cheaper than my first purchase. I do wonder if they might be selling the 2nd edition at Watkins in future. Thank for this walk through, really appreciate being kept up to date. Hash Tag Tarot.
Oh wow...this new edition really is lovely. 😍 I'm glad I was able to help get it to you! The matte card stock too.....love it! I still think I'm leaning a bit toward the new Alchemical... Decisions, decisions.
So beautiful. I love both this and the alchemical tarot. I have a book by Robert M Place about the history and symbolism of Tarot but I would so love a copy of one of these decks as well. Which do you prefer do you think? Would you consider doing a comparison side-by-side of the two in the future perhaps Simon? 😊
How lovely of Jen to pick these decks up and send them over for you. This deck looks awesome! And I’m really interested in the book. I love a good tarot book!!!! Watching your videos is causing my tarot collection to expand 😂 I’m not complying though! . . . You know how much I love my Tarot 🤣❤️ Much love and light your way ❤️😘
I'm going to have to get the big guide book to this deck. it's been on my list forever. Love the new edition! I got the new Alchemical edition....wish this one was available when I ordered it. Oh well.....just more $$'s to shipping....ha ha. Thanks Simon!
Ive got the Alchemical tarot, the first occult tarot and i paid for the sevenfold mystery today from watkins books since watching your alchemical unboxing a few weeks ago. They are really really pleasing to own and use. The quality of the cards is fantastic. The first occult tarot is ok but not really my style, however it is the beautiful card stock and Roberts artwork speaks to me anyway. The book you can get with it was interesting for more context on the designs themselves but if you dont love the artwork or your not a collector i wouldnt get it. Ive also spoken to Robert and hes not sure if its going to be printed again, im not sure if i should say that but i knkw your a collector so...
The art is great. I just dislike that the qualities of the personifications are spelled out on the actual cards. It tends to defeat the magic of allegory.
it bugs me that the back of the cards don't look like the ace of pentacle card... just the grass. the current backs like they're for children. but it's ok, right?
Hi, Simon, Thanks for this very helpful review! I am seriously considering purchasing this deck. (I have the Alchemical Tarot, first edition, and the renewed edition. One question I cannot seem to find an answer to regarding Place's tarot art is whether it is digital or not. Do you happen to know? Thanks!
@@the_hermits_cave Simon, I just found an interesting interview with Place. Here is the link:www.reddit.com/r/tarot/comments/b2lst3/an_rtarot_interview_with_robert_m_place/ Apparently he did the Alchemical first edition with pen and ink, but then went to digital. Here is a quote from question 5 of that interview: "I did not want to go through this again, so by the time I worked on The Tarot of the Saints, I drew the cards in pen and ink then scanned them into the computer. Then I colored the scanned drawings with Photoshop. After that deck, I began drawing and coloring the entire illustration in Photoshop."
