No kidding. I had to have an A/C leak repair done on my 95 Beretta some years ago and I said to the shop guy, "Okay. But you NEVER tell my wife how much this is costing!" They had to go to Cuba for parts. (Just kidding--barely.)
This car has an story behind it... When Ratan Tata(owner) was going on a business meeting in his car on a day having heavy rainfall, he saw on one scooter, 4 people struggling against the rains and pot holes, father was driving with a 4 or 5 year old standing between him and handle and mother was carrying a toddler in her arms who was probably ill....this moved his heart and then he thought to make a car for people who can't afford a car(there are plenty in India and probably other countries too) hence nano came into production.....it is not made to compete with anyone...it is made to keep your family dry in rain and in shade during hot noon..that's it.
Nah they'd translate pretty much the same in Hindi. People in India still see a car as a status symbol and will take out huge loans to buy bigger cars than they need.
@@mrducky179 *Safety features* Indians: "What's that?" But in all seriousness, the Indian traffic rules is not that much into safety. Yiu can even see 3 wheel autorikshaw where almost like 12/13 people board it.
I bought this car in 2010 and it still runs! It has endured the Indian roads (many of them in a rough condition) and lugged surprising amounts of weights (9 people at one point no kidding). For short-distance utilitarian purposes and nothing else, I am extremely satisfied. It has done what it was built to do.
How didb9 people manage in this tiny car? It must be suffocating and very unsafe in case car even rolls over as its shape makes it unstable. I'd call it a bluff even if the people were migrant labours, thin and small.
Unfortunately it's true still in Russia. People take mortgage to buy an apartment in a newly built house and then they top it with a car loan. They spend decades praying of that loans. Honestly I'm surprised how they even afford living after that. And don't understand, why they buy new cars, new apartments - I've never understood that status symbol thing.
@@grolribasi While I understand the status thing Same thing is true in Turkey as well. It almost wasn't 7-10 years ago but than we got into a economic downturn and than a crisis. I can't imagine how people buy new cars at this point. Any new car really. A midrange civic costs 5-6 years of avarage income. you work for 5-6 years and every single coin you make goes for a civic. It's pretty sad the situation that we live in in 7-13k a year gdp per capita world.
@@grolribasi This takes a little dark turn here in Poland: Many young people want to have a cool car but can't afford one. So instead of doing the logical thing (saving up money) they tend to buy very old imported cars in extremely poor condition (Think salvaged and then badly repaired.) Each year there are hundreds of accidents where a young, inexperienced driver had killed himself on road because his car fell apart under him.
@@OKANGUVEN99 this is tough. I thought Turkey was a successful country, many Russians go there for vacation. But now I think that's exactly the reason - it's cheap. At least you had a better time 7-10 years ago. 20 years ago a car for Russians was unattainable luxury. Only the government elite and the similar could afford it.
@@mrducky179 bro i m having tata nano from 2013-2014 till now i have drove this car approx 2lakh kms still it is in good cndt no failure at any place not a single puncture.
The point of nano was never about crash tests, features etc. It was just made for a common man in India to travel from point A to B with family, which is always better than a family of 4 riding on a bike!!
paritosh bk But honestly it’s kinda sad how the manufacturers seem to have gone to such lengths in terms of profit maximization that they couldn’t design a single crash safety feature into a car that is advertised as a “family vehicle”.
@@Psychic9008 This car is not designed as a "car" is designed as a 4 wheel bike sustitutive. To be fair, I dont understad why anyone would chose this tata over a 2003 Citroën C2 or C3. Love this channel. Most car people focus on the same thing like Ferrari and Porsche’s. Gets boring. You got the weird and wonderful stuff. Well there was that one Ferrari but it was a burned.
Making a car that seats four in comfort with AC in 3000 dollars is a feat in itself. Though it failed, those who bought it, love it and have not complained about reliability.
I bought it for 60,000 Rupees for a second hand one in US dollars it's approx 900$. I'm pretty much happy with it. Already went nearly 6k kms in around 5 months. Value for money and easy to commute......
I don't know whether the 3000 usd figure is because the rupee was stronger in 2008 or because its with some kind of added taxation for export but the price you would pay for the lowest end model today would be around 1500 USD off the showroom floor.
It sold up to 75,000 in a year but not the Elon Musk type boast of 250,000. The early cars were sold at a loss to promote sales the car was improved and options added. As many stated safer than a MCycle, MScooter or MBike. Sad that the press was snobby about it.
From south India . I bought this car in 2018 just before production stops. My neighbours won't give enough width for a standard car in my pocket road. I was initially driving with a grudge but this little thing really helped me lot with my grocery shopping and even small packs of cements tiles so it was a all-rounder use..and it was a humbling experience...thanks to Tata
We have only 30 letters, one letter - one voice/sound, there is no changing letters and voice trough the text. And also we parallel using cyrillic and latinic, but more latinic. And I learnt to read when I was 4 years old. To read is easy, but grammar is really hard.
Nice, you know flags. And Tito, yes, unfortunately. That guy messed whole our life 😂 It was better at that time for living, but, I think it was not so good because he was thinking only for himself. As any another politician. As our president today 😂
Ah to be fair it's the same here in England, thankfully fuel is a little 'cheaper' at the moment, but still reckon $6.30 a gallon for unleaded would make most Americans eyes water. Haha
I tried to buy one of these years ago, and i kept waiting for it to be imported. there was a rumor that they were going to make a us-approvable model but obviously that never happened sadly. I still think it's a great concept for a low cost car.
I drive the cheapest version of the cheapest car sold in the United States. A base model Chevrolet Spark LS. Manual trans, manual windows, manual door locks. I bought the car new because I LOVE tiny, dirt cheap, bare-bones cars...they are honest and simple with no pretense. Can I afford a brand new Accord or Camry? Easily. It's weird how people clearly look down on me for buying the car. At best I get sympathetic comments...at worst negative ones. I just don't care. They can keep rocking the "bigger, better, faster, more" American mentality...and buy their $50K SUVs. I'll continue to enjoy my little street legal go-kart :)

I own the updated Nano GenX. I drive routinely at 65 mph on expressway. Maximum i have gone upto is 71 mph (115 kmph). It has Bluetooth, power windows power steering, central locking, keyless entry, fog lamps, AC, music system and 4 speakers. Cost 3.8k USD (In 2016). Now completed 60k kms. They upgraded suspension (now its way better than old Nano) added crumple zones and strengthened the door frames in GenX. This increased its weight by 70kg.
@@McRocket In a Nano, you would be trapped inside, punctured and sliced by jagged, bent, and sharp metallic sheets and glass. Personally, I'm pretty sure I'd stand a better chance of surviving a crash on my Moto Guzzi. Being thrown from the bike is a grim prospect, but it's much better than being inside a Nano that offers no resistance to whatever collides with it.
Not egos but the design the engine and some other faults instead of buying nanos we indians would go with maruti suzuki 800 which is the best car in under $5000 it has 4 cylinder 5 speed and it looked great but the nano looked like an egg
I own a tata nano cng version. I love the car It gives me an average of 20kmpl in city with AC. & 35kmpl outstation. I even clocked a speed of 100kmph on express highway. It drives smoothly even in mountainous terrain. Definitely worth every penny.
Wow, reminds me of the old beetle, except plastic and liquid cooled, with a/c. I'd love to drive and experience one of these. Honestly really cool for the price
I drove the top model of the Nano for 3 years. I sold it because I was moving from one state to another and it's very difficult to change registration. I loved the car as did my my wife. It ran without ever stopping anywhere at any time and never ran out of petrol. It had airconditioning and even automatic transmission. My stupid fellow countrymen rejected the car as it did not boost their ego. Needless to say it was a dream to park too. Before they disappear from the face of the earth I plan to buy two used ones for running around in my town
There was even an electric version but it didn't take off because the nano cars were mainly made for poor countrys the people coldn't simply aford them and they had really short range so it was a flop
I bought my new 1966 Corsair Monzo convertible for $2,200.00 off the show room floor. The Mustang was about the same as I recall. I suspect that is about the equivalent of around $18,000.00 today so the Tata is amazingly priced.

It’s one of the, if not the cheapest brand new car ever produced. AC was an option on many cars until the late 90s (at least on basic cars) and this thing has it
I too have one in Blue, LX variant with- A/C, front power windows, front glovebox with lid(instead of empty space), Bluetooth/AUX/USB music system, that round charging port, front fog lights, passenger ORVM & a small spoiler on the roof. Mine doesn't have e-PAS (power steering) since they introduced it later as an option. But even without it it's perfectly fun to drive & provides a much better feel. This is a really fun/peppy city car that can zip through traffic & you can basically park it in anywhere, it takes roughly the space of 2 bikes.
0:04 This is a solid edit. Normally these look pretty clunky and have extreme lighting changes, but this was different. The only real dead giveaway I got for the jump cut is that green van on the far right has a brighter reflection at the 0:05 second mark, but other than that it looked like magic, as it should, well done.

that was the idea behing making this car. many people in India use two wheelers to travel even when they have their spouse and couple of kids. its very risky. hence TATA wanted to make a car specifically for that target audience. unfortunately, their advertising communication failed badly and it got labled as a 'Cheap' car... i actually own one of these (second generation one with power steering, Ac, and power windows) and its actually a usefull car in crowded city roads... anyways you cant go past 20-25 miles per hour on city roads so this car is value for money. and it has a very good fuel economy. its sad to see this cad being discontinued.
It's got equipment levels like a 1950s economy car, which I think is great. It reminds me of the 1973 Hillman Avenger base model I once had, where they'd deleted things like the fresh air vents, the door switches for the courtesy lamp, the wiring for the reverse lights, and the exterior mirrors.
@@josepherhardt164 No. Strangely, bulbs were fitted in the lamp housings, but there was no wiring for them, and there was a blanking plug fitted in the gearbox where the switch would normally go.
Tata was actually developing a second-generation car when they pulled the plug on the original Nano. There were prototypes running about and everything. It looked a lot like the previous car, but it was supposed to be improved in every way. There would be a proper crash structure with airbags, fuel-injection, a performance option, an electric option... the works basically. They cancelled it partly because of the OG Nano's slow sales and partly because the price of the new car would have made it a competitor to Tata's next car up, the Tiago. Similarly, the performance version would have gone up against the performance variant of the Tiago ( the Tiago JTP). There were still rumours that the Electric variant would be manufactured for fleets, and a pilot program WAS conducted, but Tata went ahead and launched an electric variant of the Tiago sedan (the Tigor) Instead
I loved our little mohito green 2012 Nano LX. It was a brilliant car if you can get past the fact it was a death trap. It was about 2017 when they released the crash test results and it, like most Indian entry-level cars, failed. We took that car on some pretty decent road trips in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. IT was a beast on the road up to Ooti, a hill-station, though I did stress out the clutch. It had great interior room, I'm 6'3" and could sit in the back with the front seat all the way back. For three of us it was a great car to get around Bangalore and the few trips we took it on. Topped out at 100km/h (60ish mph) with a tailwind. I didn't have power steering which was OK except when I had a carpal tunnel issue when I wished I had waited for the 'twisty' model with power steering. Repairs were mostly covered under warranty but after-warranty repairs were cheap. I think it was about $20 for the clutch. As a city-car it was great. Once the crash tests were official, we didn't take it on the highway much. It was a conversation piece as it was the cheapest car available, and that I was the big (perceived) rich white guy who owned it. Sold it to an Indian colleague who wanted something to drive when it rained instead of his Enfield. This is still one of my favourite cars.
I had one. Great little thing. Mine came with radio with Bluetooth connectivity, air con and power steering. Cost me under €3,000 for the top model in 2014 with 4 year warranty. Loved it. Got me around Northern INDIA. Breaks occasionally overheated mind you! Top speed is 70mph, a limiter kicks in after that. I used to cruise at that on empty roads which were few and far between.
I have 3 cars along with nano... I have latest and last model with back hatch , glove box , decent music system and auto transmssion ... I love this is so much than other cars .. so handy in traffics and in around the city ... I love nano and I named mine as bubble..
Rob. New to channel. Been watching mainly your Under Dunne channel. I enjoy your humour. All cars in Oz are RHD. Normal for us. The Tata looks like a Daewoo Matiz from the late 90's.
It sounds a lot like my 1981 Honda Civic. It weighs about 1500 pounds, had 12 inch wheels originally (I upgraded it to 13 when I couldn't buy 12 inch tires any more), it has a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. I've owned it since 1995 and it still runs like a top.
This car is much better than my 1972 Honda 600 coupe. Its claimed weight was 1312 pounds and my best unassisted speed was 70 at 6,000 RPMs. It had terrible torque steer on a slippery surface, got 40 mph (impressive in the early 80s) and was great fun to drive. Most died at about 35K miles, mine made it to 86K before the crank started knocking. We have had some wonderfully quirky cars to choose from over the years.
