I’m so happy to see Beatles for Sale. I never would have guessed that would be on the list in 100 years but I love what you had to say about it. There is a ache in Lennon’s voice that speaks to the pain of his early years. It’s wonderful that you point it out.

amen. i can only only guess what a 28 year old buddy holly would have sounded like in 1964 but lennon's singing on the songs you mention is perfect even when he himself hated it and i enjoy little else more than him from 63 to 68. orbison is a serious runner up.

same here, I am a lifelong Beatles fan, my favourite albums would be Revolver and Abbey Road. But the Beatles for Sale is the album I play when I just want to listen to the 'Beatles'. I should be more articulate, but since the Beatles themselves weren't extremely articulate but merely 'pure' at that time, I feel I don't need to.

Beatles for Sale is my first every purchase of a Beatles album when I was a kid. I still like it for the excellent Lennon/McCartney orginals, but some of the cover versions just don't do it for me anymore. It definitely has all the signs of a rush job to get some product out there, but even with that stipulation its still pretty damn good. It wouldn't be my go-to Beatles album at this time.

Beatles for Sale is really such and underrated album in their catalog. The original numbers such as "No Reply", "I'm a Loser", "Every Little Thing" & "What you're Doing" reveal a real growth in sophistication and emotional power. The Notorious Byrds Brothers is the Byrds masterpiece and one of the great landmark psychedelic albums of the era.

Hey! Thanks for turning me on to that Smithscompilation. Really sounds brilliant. The cover is also really great! I hardly know that band (except for Strangeways Here We Come). And, yes, the more records you have, the harder it becomes to decide what to listen to. One almost feels obliged to listen to music just because you have so much. Sometimes I really have to remind myself that I don t have to. 😅 Very nice videos you make there, and pleasant to listen to! Cheers from Munich, Germany

Great video Mazzy! 10 great pics. My favorite cover by the Beatles has always been Words of Love, like you said such beautiful harmonies. I love the Byrds pic as well, one of my favorites alongside Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Triad was the song that got Crosby kicked out of the band and was given to Jefferson Airplane, correct? Regarding R.E.M. I was a fan since they first came out in ’83 and saw them many times during the 80’s. I still love the IRS years. Murmur and Reckoning got me into listening to the Byrds with that jangle guitar, so much so that I went out and bought a Rickenbacker 330 and then a 360 when I played in a band.

That Kate Bush album is brilliant and I listen to it a lot as well. This is a tough theme because I play a few albums from about 10 artists regularly across their catalog without going into one specific album. I could not find link that you mentioned several times. I am a bit dotty. Did I miss it somewhere? Thanks for sharing your go-to albums. I think I am a tad younger than you which seems to make a big difference in what I listen to most often. I llisten to Beatles and Kinks, but then most of my mine are a bit newer (Pixies, Tom Petty, Johnny Clegg & Juluka, etc.). There arre several of your picks that I have not listened to as a whole album so thhis gives me somethhing to discover today. I also am not beholden to vinyl juust because I moved around alot, including overseas, and lugging my albums became a nightmare. I do wish I held on to some but that is life. I was a radio DJ during the vinyl era so some of my frustrations with the medium stem from that. Thankks and cheers from New Mexico.

I felt inspired, Norman - to reply with my 10 records I listen to the most. This is not in any order. 1. Court & Spark - Joni Mitchell - I suppose most people prefer her more folk based albums. But , I just love the orchestra with her voice. I really enjoy the oboes, flute and french horns that are showcased on this album. 2. The Juliet Letters- Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet - I have the CD. Picked it up in the $2 bin. What a beautiful album about the many facets of love. The quartet is my favorite musical grouping. (In fact, many rock bands are quartets). I heard the songs were inspired by letters left at the Juliet statue in Verona, Italy but that many be apocryphal. There is sweetness, comedy and dark comedy in the lyrics. Elvis and the quartet fuse together perfectly. 3. The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle - Bruce Springsteen- Do you want to go back to a time and a place where exuberance and joy are expressed? This album will take you to 1973 and the New Jersey Shore on a Friday night, hanging out with your friends and looking for the person you have a crush on! Springsteen lyrics are poetry here. I think his best album. 4. They Say I'm Different - Betty Davis. - She is SO cool. Just love this R&B/ Soul. The album cover is beautiful. Like a Goddess. 5. Young Rascals- The Young Rascals. I learned about this album from Norman and it has been in heavy rotation ever since. Inspiring sounds- like a perfect summer day. 6. One Nation Under a Groove- Funkadelic - Feel the funk. Have fun. 7. Apple Venus - XTC - I love every XTC album. And certain songs are just..incredible. Generals And Majors, Making Plans for Nigel. Andy Partridge is a musical genius. But this album is so much fun to listen to over and over. Many people think they sound like the Beatles but they remind me of the Kinks. Perhaps it is the oh so British sensibility. 8. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye - On a Sunday morning, when it is quiet and still. Put this album on and your place will feel like a cathedral - In a very good way. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's duet 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' - is my favorite duet. It is not on this album but thought I would mention the duet. 9. Smile - Beach Boys. A teenage symphony to God- That is what Brian said. Just glorious. Brain Wilson maybe our greatest living composer. To think about the breadth and depth of this project. Incredible undertaking. 10. Double Nickels on The Dime - The Minutemen - Fast, fun American punk. D. Boon, Watt, Hurley, make you realize cool things, came come from anywhere. The creative process in action. Honorable Mentions - Any Album by Tom Waits - Any Album by David Bowie I hope I inspired others to check out these great albums. Love to hear people's comments. Thanks Norman!

@@HTJB60 Hi Michael. You should never worry, just say what you enjoy! A few weeks ago, I tried to get Norman to list his 'favorite albums', but he said he could not. I think this idea is better, because it causes oneself to be more 'objective'. Asking yourself, well ,what do I really listen to a lot? Not the subjective question of 'What are my favorites? '- I agree with Norman- an impossible task. I also agree with you, this list can 'shift' from month to month but these albums keep resurfacing for me. I have learned about so many albums from this community Norman has created. I really love the ones when he is chatting it up with another music lover. Norman could have a degree in musicology,

By a slew of objective measures, the best rock/pop album ever made, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) by the extraordinary Laura Nyro. Its innovations, seismic influence, musical complexity, emotional depth, musicianship, themes, conceptual structure, vocal performance, poetic lyricism, sexual content, brilliant arrangements, commercial success ( 3 top 13 Billboard hits for other artists covers), beautiful cover art and fonts, exceptional songwriting at its core and scented with lilac which still lingers. A jazzy art pop masterpiece, unsurpassed: the album " blew everybody's mind " Todd Rundgren.

@@lupcokotevski2907 You are a silly boy who egotistically believes that everything he loves the most must be "objectively" the best. I'm not even sure you understand the meaning of "objective". (Are you related to that goofball, Rick Beato, who also makes unprovable statements based on his personal preferences?) I like some of Nyro's music a lot, but if that album was "objectively" the greatest, it should be mentioned on at least 90% of music critics' Top 10 lists, instead of being so obscure and half-forgotten even by lovers of 1960s music. Art is, by nature, subjective, and very few objective statements can be made about it. At best, one might be able to say that something is "objectively amongst the greatest". But that's as far as any truly intelligent person would go.

A niche that only collectors would fully appreciate! (I came upon your list just after discovering your friend Chris's at The Long Cut. Sometimes algorithms work.) I consider certain records I've heard a million times to be like comfort food. They may not be great artists' grandest, most accomplished or polished works, but sometimes you want something reliable, nourishing and familiar, even if it's not widely considered their magnum opus. I'll try not to duplicate your or Chris's selections, but the compilations that immediately come to mind for me are various Stax singles collections, Stevie Wonder's "Greatest Hits Vol. 2," and Al Green's "Greatest Hits" (with the iconic cover that Elvis Costello echoes, intentionally or not, on "This Year's Model"). Other longtime staples for me include: Joni Mitchell's "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," Talking Heads' "More Songs About Buildings and Food," Steely Dan's "Katy Lied," the Kinks' "Face to Face," Television's "Adventure," Aretha Franklin's "Let Me In Your Life" (because Wonder's "Until You Come Back to Me" is one of my very favorite songs"), Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes," Elvis C's "My Aim is True"... And if I had to choose a lesser-but-still-glorious Beatles album, I'd pick "Let It Be," flaws and all...

My favorite bands are Genesis and The Who. And yet I don't own "sell out"! I can stream it, but it's just not the same. I remember seeing that album at DJ's Sound City in Southcenter mall in Tukwila when it first came out, and almost buying it. Wish I had, but on my next trip to the record store I'll add it to my list. It's been missing from that list for some reason. I did the same thing with Thick as a Brick, and picked it up at High Voltage in Tacoma a couple of years ago. And I did it with Peter Gabriel's So, picking it up at Spin Cycle on Broadway. It's fun to fill the holes in your collection.

Living in the 70's (1974) by Skyhooks. Always a feel good joy. Most of the songs were banned from radio because of the sex and drug references. Fantastic inventive arrangements and wonderful lyrical flourishes "I feel like a good time that's never been had".

After seeing both lists consecutively, Chris's and Norman's, it is the first time that my soul has been at peace after a top list. Perhaps it is because they have been created from the inside out, or that logically two people who are so musical should choose transversal records, in the same way my thanks. Norman maybe you love the Blue Moon version of The Mavericks? Greetings.

Mr. Moonlight is not too shabby. For Sale (UK Issue) is a stand out of the Beatles early work-probably because we all listened too much to 'A Hard Days Night' too much. The next three titles would bring Rubber Soul and Revolver after the HELP soundtrack. So, it is a RED HOT time for the Beatles and For Sale just floats in there getting less attention. Great cover shot. Simon & Garfunkel's- Bookends... the soundtrack from THE GRADUATE... and Bridge Over Troubled Waters. A Huge moment for the band. Which... was breaking up. Beggars Banquet (original cover art), Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers is a RS 'Triad' that is hard to mess with. I'm more inclined to the last two than the first, but no complaints. REMs Automatic for the People-from the CD Era-near perfect record. Paired in my mind with Neil Young's Harvest Moon. I would slide a Van Morrison album in here. It could be the double CD from the early 1990s just discussed: Hyms to the Silence.

Hi Mazzy, nice comments about Lennon and the Beatles for Sale LP, interesting insight on those. Your Stones pick is certainly one of my all-time favorites - vacillates between that one, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers (but see my comment below on my “go to” picks and yet another Stones go to LP or two….) My ten “go to” / very often listened-to albums are, in no particular order…Bob Dylan: Bringing it all Back Home, John Mayall: Blues from Laurel Canyon, Brian Eno: Taking Tiger Mountain, Steppenwolf: The Second, The Beach Boys: Holland, The Band: Music From Big Pink, The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour, The Rolling Stones: Goat’s Head Soup” (and “Now”, if you’ll allow me a tie here…), Talking Heads: More Songs About Buildings and Food, and for a tenth pick - Wings: At the Speed of Sound. Having said all of this, I could give you another ten picks from among the variety of obscure psychedelic relics in my collection, and so on. Thanks, and peace out.

weirdly enough my go to is music for airports when I'm bamboozled by my large music collection. Normally within 5 minutes I know what I want to hear. I don't dislike music for airports but that seems to be it's purpose for me. My last name is Butterworth which also makes me a maker of butter I guess and I'm a Virgo so I have a few things in common with Mr Maslov. I hope you're well Mazzy, I'm good aside from losing all the high-end in my hearing, waiting a year to get my NHS hearing-aids and then discovering that they aren't going to help my music listening or guitar playing. What to do Mazzy? I think I put all my eggs in one basket and now my basket is broken.
