Dying - it’s not an easy conversation for most. Regina Ciriack, who is terminally ill, has a hard time discussing the topic with her family. A professional companion for the dying helps her.
In the beginning, Regina’s primary response was fear. Fear of dying. The Berliner had already dealt with a lot: Lung cancer, a brain tumour. But there is no cure for the lung disease COPD. The alveoli in the lungs are destroyed; the lung capacity decreases; breathlessness and panic attacks follow - and in the end, death. The 67-year-old wants to make the most of her last months, and to make her own decisions on what happens to her and when. Her husband and children support her as much as they can. But Regina also wants a professional death companion at her side. Someone who has already seen what’s in store for her and can take away her fear of death. A report by Sylvia Wassermann.

I’m terminally ill myself, and this is a great video! I’ve been lucky enough to go through the grieving process of my own death. It’s always hard at first, then it gets easier to accept and can even become a beautiful process. It’s always nice if those around you can accept it too, but that’s not always true, everyone is different. My father won’t accept I’m dying, acts as if nothing is wrong with me, he just can’t deal with it. I have had help with lots of grief counseling and that is where I get my support, thank God for these people!!!!

I like Regina's way of thinking. I'm like her. No need to torture yourself. What should happen will happen. Live life well and forget the rest. When it's almost time to "go", don't make your love ones suffer about it. Death is part of life and shouldn't be scary. It should be accepted and dealt with positively if there is no other alternative.

I wish we could talk more openly about death. Instead, we try to avoid any discussion and so no solution is found other than just to let people waste away and, in many cases, suffer until the end. We disguise it as "love" but I see it as selfishness. It's saying, "Just suffer there in your incurable state for months or years because I'd be hurt for a few days if you're gone.". This is a start, but I wish we could all die at our own time of choosing with dignity.

It's a branch of the Order of Malta. The documentary said Malteser International, but that can't be true, since that branch is based in Germany but only works abroad. Malteser Deutschland has a "Hospizarbeit" program, that must be the one. You can google it. But it's specific to Germany, and all in German.... Unfortunately, AFAIK the USA branch of the Order of Malta does not do hospice work. But there are other organisations you can explore.

I just watched this. Did I understand her daughter to tell her mother “I dare to not live my life” as in “I dare to not be inconvenienced” - I had to go back a couple of times because at first I understood it as she knows her mother is dying so there’s no way she can go live her life. If I’m now understanding correctly, what a selfishly detached daughter! Creating additional worry for her dying mother. The Bible at 2 Timothy 3:1-5 speaks about what the world will be like in the last days and one of the indications is about having no natural affection. With the condition that this world is in, I’m convinced we’re living in the last days.
