There’s one line that will forever go down in movie history as one of the most iconic moments of dialogue ever, and it was almost never to be. While filming the 1984 sci-fi / action / horror classic The Terminator, director James Cameron had initially written the line for Arnold Schwarzenegger as “I’ll come back”. However, as seen in the recent Netflix documentary series on the Austrian Oak, Arnie and Cameron had a heated clash over the line. Schwarzenegger hadn’t said the line correctly so Cameron suggested he just say the now iconic “I’ll be back” instead, leading Arnie to questioning the director’s writing, and getting a suitably pissed-off response in return.
This is just one example of how The Terminator not only became one of the most beloved movie franchises in Hollywood history, well, it is if you stop at part two that is, but that’s a story for later. It also launched the career of an actor who, up until its release, had been an enormously successful bodybuilder, with roles in smaller features, plus an awesome turn as Conan the Barbarian in the John Miluis epic from 1982. So, get yourselves glammed up for a night at Tech Noir as we head out to party with The Terminator here on ARNIE REVISITED!
Join us on Fantasizing About Fantasy Films as we reexamine the divisive 1984 sequel, Conan the Destroyer! This attempt to soften Arnold Schwarzenegger's barbarian into a PG-rated fantasy hero may not have achieved the same success as The Terminator, but it's not without its merits.
Discover the eccentric supporting cast, including basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, Superman's Sarah Douglas, Tracey Walter, Mako, Olivia D’Abo, Grace Jones, and even Andre the Giant under loads of latex. Plus, enjoy a compelling score by Basil Pouledouris, despite some recycled elements from the first film, and excellent cinematography by DP Jack Cardiff.
While many hardcore fans prefer the darker, R-rated original, Conan the Barbarian, let's explore the hidden gems within Conan the Destroyer. Was it really as bad as its reputation suggests? Would Robert E. Howard approve? Share your thoughts in the comments!

God I loved the 80s I would go back there in an instant and live out the rest of my days in bliss. The first Terminator was one of the best movies ever made and Ive seen it at least twice a year for 4 decades, Thanks for the video

I did not like CtD when I saw it on VHS in the 80s but, over time, I grew to like it. Not as much as the previous one but I find it enjoyable.

Conan the Barbarian is a thousand times better than the Destroyer.... The Barbarian is one of the best films ever made, a masterpiece...the Destroyer is campy and not that great.

I mostly agree with the OP. CONAN I is a brilliant iconic movie. THE DESTROYER is at best, just okay. They eliminated so many things that made THE BARBARIAN so good, including making it PG. it’s still watchable, but not a must-see. I have them both on the new Arrow Video Limited Edition Collector Box Set. And I’m glad I have them both in this upgraded print and with all the special features, the cool box and included collectibles. But if it only included THE BARBARIAN, and was even cheaper, I would have been even happier.

@@rmarkley79 besides the obvious mistake and sloppy clean up, they should’ve gone with Predator anyway. I think it’s more iconic than the Conan films. And if they do Conan, they should’ve done Barbarian, not Destroyer.

I'm SO glad that they ultimately decided to go with Arnold for the role instead of O.J.!! It would absolutely SUCK, if everytime we wanted to see the iconic "Terminator", we had to see Simpson running around trying to take out a white woman WAY before he was ever even caught, uuh... taking out a white woman??...🤔😳

Tracey Walter in Conan The Destroyer was the world's greatest sidekick before he joined The Joker. Let's face it, Tracey Walter has always been the world's greatest sidekick.

i wanted to love conan the destroyer, but the huge drop in quality, set decor, acting, script, wardrobe, and a not a R rating ruined it for me.... to which i would not have minded if Conan the barbarian did not set such high water marks, conan the destroyer could never hope to meet.

As with so many sequels, Conan the Destroyer lacks heart. It's just a collage of pointless time extending scenes, repeats from the first one, and whatever tropes were (thought to be) popular at the time. I don't think I'll live to see another good Conan film. Unless some up-and-coming makes it big, happens to be a R.E. Howard fan, and somehow manages to film it with minimal studio interference. It seems to be the trend at the moment to hand over reins to someone who isn't familiar with the IP, and will completely misunderstand it. Speaking of misunderstanding. "Conan lives in an RPG". Role-playing games took inspiration from sword&sorcery novels, not the other way around 😅. We are living at the peak era of death of the author.

Hmm, if a new director were to make a new Conan movie would you want it to be closer to the books or would you want it to continue with the changes that the Director of Conan the Barbarian made in that movie? It is my understanding that description of the Conan character in the book would have him looking a little different than Arnold’s depiction. I never read the books so I don’t know. As someone that wishes they could direct movie myself, I do find it annoying that movies today are seemingly being made by people that hate the properties they are privileged to play within. Lastly, if you saw the more recent Conan reboot from a few years back; what did you think? I honestly thought it was kinda corny. I haven’t seen a good sword and sorcery movie in years, I think the genre is dead right now.
@VikingTeddy
@VikingTeddy 3 месяца назад
@@prestonowens4594 I'd really love to see a decent book adaptation. The books are actually very simple in their plots, they're really more about the vibe, which actually would translate well to screen. Conan in the books looks like the comic books depict him. Body builder physique, jet black neck length hair, always either scowling or smiling broadly. The newer movie was very forgettable, corny is a good descriptor. And I have to agree about sword&sorcery, it's dead for now. But no ip stays dead forever now that studios are scraping every barrel bottom they can find for a lucky find. Someone is sitting on the rights. Just have to hope it doesn't end up with a director who wants to "let go of the old and, explore a new kind of Conan." We'll end up with a barbarian championing for whatever social movement is relevant at the time.

Here's how you make a terminator sequel... make a fake true crime documentary about the events following the first movie. The cultural impact of the 17 police officers murdered in one night (which would have been huge international news), the mystery of what happened and the conspiracy cover up by the government. Use the reaction to the events as a means to examine humanity and whether It's truly in our nature to destroy ourselves. Perfect for an era when we want more Terminator but don't want more sequels.
