Yaaasss! My favorite James Cameron movie. I consider T2 a superior film, but Terminator more rewatchable. It’s rare a film with such an unremittingly bleak story spawns such massive popularity. I attribute that to a compelling premise, tight storytelling, wonderful performances (especially Michael Beihn and Arnie), inventive effects and great direction. And it is basically a slasher movie, though all the elements it has are not common to most slashers, lending it mainstream appeal. Linda Hamilton is the “final girl”, but the time the movie spends developing her character and her performance make her likeable and a cut above those seen in other movies featuring a body count and a singleminded, nigh-indestructible killer. It is Biehn as Kyle Reese who does the heavy lifting of selling the plot, and boy does he. Dialogue which could come off as heavy-handed or silly coming from, say, Arnie seems absolutely REAL from Mr. Biehn(heehee). This is definitely his finest hour as an actor, a performance so good that any which followed are judged by comparison to it. You’re spot-on about Arnie playing to type-his sheer size and physicality is menacing, and his lack of breathing and monotone delivery conveys the inner machine wonderfully. Can you imagine him playing Kyle Reese? I shudder at the thought. 1984 spawned two inventive riffs on the slasher formula, but unlike 80s sensation Nightmare on Elm Street it was The Terminator which achieved cult status transcending its genre trappings to become an evergreen pop-culture phenomenon/cash cow to this very day, making a superstar of both actor & writer/director and a cornerstone of sci-fi action cinema. Nice review as always; please keep ‘em coming!

You should review True Lies because it became the template for all following action blockbusters: A lot of action, copious humor (especially through a buddy dynamic), and a romantic element for the female audience. Of course Marvel eventually turned that template into a trope and a bad one at that. I respect the first two Terminator flicks because they had the courage to be dark.

I think this is so much better than T2. The low budget is part of the reason why. My theory about James Cameron is all his best movies had Michael Biehn. Once Cameron got rid of Biehn, the movies suffered.

Not a True Lies fan I take it.

@@nathanmoore5435 let me reframe that. I think T2 is really entertaining. I think the man vs machine of T1, I find a lot more intriguing. So both are great. I would say that I’m not a fan of True Lies. I did think Titanic was great but I’m not a big fan of Avatar. Maybe I need to give them another look. Here’s hoping the James Cameron stretches and bring us something with more human emotion and less visual effects driven.

@@MrBdiddypop Well me personally, I think that T2 goes beyond being entertaining and is legitimately thought provoking about its themes of war, future, and fate. As much as I love the first Terminator, the movie is more or a less about a killer robot. All the themes that the first film very briefly touch upon are all greatly expanded in the sequel. Plus, you get more action, more world building, and better visual effects. But I will say that what the first film has that the second film doesn't is a legitimately haunting atmosphere and more scenes of genuine suspense, so for that reason alone, I can understand why some fans prefer the first film over the second one. I say, why not love both?

"The Terminator": The Hero's Journey of Sarah Connor, assisted by Tech, Sgt, Kyle Reese. ("Jennifer Lawrence"? Who is that?)
